Strengthening and structuring the contribution of sport to the Sustainable Development Goals.

France hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, the largest sport, institutional and media gathering in the world. These Games, open to everyone, responsible, sustainable and inclusive, offer a unique opportunity to bring together institutional and sports stakeholders around the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. In this context, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, will host the Sport for Sustainable Development (S4SD) Summit: Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together For a Better Future, in Paris on the eve of the opening of the Games, on Thursday 25 July from 17:00 to 18:30.

The Summit will bring together more than 500 participants: heads of state and government, leaders of international organizations, athletes and representatives of the sports movement (French and International Federations, Olympic Movement, civil society organisations and entrepreneurs), and actors in the field of sports and development financing.

It is organized by the AFD (Agence française de développement) group, which has been strongly committed to these issues since 2018.

The participants will be invited to present their initiatives for sport and sustainable development and to make commitments in five fields – mirroring the Olympic rings:

Education and employment,

Health and nutrition,

Equality and inclusion,

Financing and impact measurement,

Sustainability and legacy.

This Summit will contribute to the legacy of the Paris Games by strengthening and structuring the contribution of sport to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sport has been long recognized as a tool for education, to support social development goals, foster tolerance, respect, well-being, and incl

Sport has been long recognized as a tool for education, to support social development goals, foster tolerance, respect, well-being, and inclusion, to promote gender equality, and to empower communities and marginalized groups. In crime prevention settings, sport can, enhance positive youth development, build life skills and provide youth with positive role models and access to pro-social networks, foster employability and support education pathways.

Sport provides a useful vehicle to implement crime prevention initiatives, especially among youth. Tailored sport-based interventions, depending on their specific goals and theory of change, can effectively reinforce and complement crime prevention strategies and programmes and increase its social impact on individuals, the community and wider society.

The contribution of sport in empowering and engaging young people is also acknowledged in the Kyoto Declaration adopted at the last United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, calls for holistic and inclusive prevention approaches that address the root causes of violence and crime, involve all relevant sectors of Government and build on partnerships. Likewise, General Assembly resolutions call on Member States to strengthen cooperation with sport organizations, and examine, effective ways and means of integrating sport into youth crime prevention frameworks.

The event will take place in the margins of the General Assembly High-level Debate on "Crime Prevention and Sustainable Development through Sports".

The role of sport as an enabler of sustainable development was recognized by Member States in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Member States also recognized the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.

The potential for sport to make positive contribution to society is well recognised. This potential has been acknowledged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that recognises sport as an important enabler to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Commonwealth is leading global efforts to more effectively measure the contribution that sport policies and programmes make to these agreed global goals. United Nations Messenger of Peace and boxing legend Muhammad Ali at UNHQ in NYC in 1975. 

Over his career, Mr. Ali supported relief and development initiatives. He hand-delivered food and medical supplies to hospitals, street children and orphanages in Africa and Asia. In a press conference at UN Headquarters in 1979, Mr. Ali spoke about God, boxing and using his fame for a good cause. The son of a sign painter, he also talked about painting for peace.

Ahead of Sport Day, we looked back at what Boxing legend Muhammad Ali brought to the world.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali took on fights outside the ring for civil rights and against war, bringing strong messages to the UN since the 1970s, so ahead of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we looked back at what he brought to the world.

“Here’s a little Black boy from Louisville, Kentucky, sitting in the United Nations talking to presidents of the world, why? Because I’m a good boxer,” he said at a press conference at UN Headquarters in 1979. “I needed boxing to get here. So, my purpose is to use boxing to get to people.”

Devoting most of his time outside the boxing ring to the pursuit of peace, Mr. Ali had earlier delivered a statement at the UN the year before to address the UN Special Committee against Apartheid in South Africa.

From the 1970s until his death in 2016, the United States Olympic gold medalist floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee, as he often aptly described himself, both inside and outside the boxing ring.
