I did a redo of my My Little Pony selkie design, like... We got two different kelpies in the comics, and we haven't gotten any selkies?! Just saying, they'd have been really cool, although I may be biased, since I really enjoy selkies and I love seals, they're absolute cutie patooties and I would die for them!
Anyways, I decided they're gonna be similar to the hippogriffs where they have a seapony and land dwelling form, but they're ponies and therefore, can have cutiemarks! Oh, uh... Also unlike in the actual lore, they don't access their seal form by wearing their pelts, but they do have seashell necklaces that can open and that transforms them, ik not really lore accurate, but also... Mlp doesn't really give a shit about lore a lot of the time... But the whole aspect of sailors and desperate men stealing their access to the sea is still there!
Basically in the lore of the mlp selkies, they used to live alongside ponies but retreated back into the sea after too many ponies got it into their head that if they steal the selkie's necklaces, then they can keep the selkie for themselves... Which to this day, some ponies are descended from selkies and just don't know it... If you're wondering who in the main cast would be most likely related, Pinkie Pie, just because my oc has the last name of Pie so may as well, Applejack by proxy which could be the ancestor that actually is the anchor that makes them related, and Fluttershy no other reason other than I like to think she fits the vibe, since iirc, selkies are considered to be rather timid
Either way, the whole necklace theft happened before the arrival of Celestia and Luna, so unfortunately for the selkie kingdom, they had nopony helping them, well, not any that are as powerful
Some time later, they established Seaquestira at the same time Equestria was founded, the sea ponies had arrived a long while later and the selkie's ruler, Queen Seafoam, had allowed the sea ponies to stay, unfortunately a disagreement broke out between Queen Seafoam and Queen Novo and the selkies had been scattered, some are hidden on land, while others are in their own small village and their former queen... She had resigned, with her kingdom now gone, she couldn't lead like she used to, so few selkies remained in the sea, but that's where Pearl Pie's story begins
She grew up in the ocean, never really done a whole lot other than make kelp cakes and trout pies (yes they're omnivorous, shush) and she heard stories from the former queen, how the surface was full of traitorous selkies and cruel ponies "surely that couldn't be true, there's gotta be good ponies somewhere" Pearl thought, and so... She decided to set off on her journey, her curiosity was always something she was scolded for, was always told "curiosity made the catfish go belly up" and even though she's a good listener, she doesn't really follow instructions very well... Sometimes on purpose
Her journey starts off in between the whole time skip of the finale, since a lot seemed to have happened then and I think having an AU that's just basically gen 4.5 would be really fun
But she comes across the Main Six (well, she hears stories about them) as well as other creatures, she finds that the world isn't as scary as Seafoam had made it out to be, and she thought that for a long while until she heard the stories about the villains that were faced throughout the entire series and yet... She never returned... She basically opened a nice little bakery in Fillydelphia and just lives a quiet and unassuming life, she does go on frequent trips to go diving, most think it's because she gets overwhelmed easily, but it's just so she can visit her old home and tell everyone about the stuff she's witnessed
Word gets back to Seafoam and she's enraged by the actions of Pearl and tells her to choose, which Pearl chooses the surface, and told the former queen "you say every creature up here is heartless, but I'm sure we both know you're projecting"
Seafoam was remorseful about what she said and had decided to follow Pearl, well... Spying is more accurate, she couldn't let go of her pride, and after she'd done that she had realized something... The creatures around Pearl had been kind, letting her cry about what happened, heck, a unicorn stallion, one who looked very similar to an old friend of Seafoam's, had been seen hugging Pearl... The unicorn knew what Pearl was this whole time and didn't mind, never tried to trap her or steal her necklace
But Seafoam, did... In a way, she was no better than those ponies who had captured her kind for generations... So, Seafoam swallowed her pride and returned Pearl's necklace to her, Seafoam had told Pearl "I was wrong about this place, I'm sorry I had to make you choose, I'm sorry about how wrong I was about every creature here, I thought that ponies couldn't change, that they would continue to hurt us, but I can see now that my way of protecting you was only hurting you and for that, you're no longer banished from the sea"
The return of Pearl's necklace had sparked a thought in her and so, Pearl told Seafoam that she accepts her apology, but that doesn't mean she forgives her
Eventually Pearl helps Seafoam and Novo settle their differences and Seafoam returns to being queen, Seafoam and Novo rule Seaquestira side by side, take that as platonic or not, but just know... Their disagreement was certainly "bitter exes" coded
Anyways, Selkies would live all over Equestria and basically would just be another creature in the pile of other creatures
Their village is like an ocean themed Ponyville, basically in my mind, Seaquestira and Equestria are very VERY similar to one another, just with a different vibe
And now some fun facts about Pearl Pie:
-Her first time baking on land didn't go very well, but the first baked good she made well enough was actually cinnamon rolls, the first recipe she perfected were muffins though!
-Her favorite color is actually chartreuse
-She's got a fear of geese (rightfully so!)
-She doesn't understand the hype with Daring Do books
-She plays Ogres and Oubliettes every Thursday
-She's fascinated by water fountains and other water features
-And she loves to play with bubbles
