Anyway the last point I have to make here is that even if tumblr breaks under the algorithm (almost certain if they don’t back out of using it) and/or everybody leaves… I don’t have anywhere else to go or post things

people like to joke about it being bad, but I legitimately really like Tumblr. it actually feels like a blogging platform in a world where facebook and twitter are active political weapons that manipulate us elections. i don’t feel like i’m baring myself to content i don’t want to see here, or having to engage with a popularity-focused culture. the content isn’t sorted to influence you or trick you. it’s a bunch of people being themselves on their own terms. it’s oldnet.

yes, i do use other websites, but i’m not interested in posting personal things to any of them. this was a place i had control over and i’ll stay with it until i can’t. and when that happens there’ll be nothing left.

That isn’t how this works irl, there’s always a difference between self-defense and intentional killing. Barring superhero fantasies about people taking justice by their hands, intentional killings done in the midst of a civil conflict have the same kind of “our truth” vs “their truth” narrative than a civil war or international war. War crimes are still crimes if you’re on the winner’s side, which is the one that gets to say they’re moral anyway, as they hold power afterwards. 

Rape during war is still rape even if people say the victims deserve it.

Theft during war is still theft even if people say it’s for social justice.

Executions during war are still murder even if people think it’s lawful.

Ethnic cleansing is still genocide even if people think it’s for the greater good.

The reason this thought is popular is reactive sadism, ie if enough people agree with me someone is “evil enough”, then my hate and sadism are justified and they don’t really compute among humanity. I can live in the fantasy that nothing I do is comparable because of what I am.

That’s not the common good - because it’s not “common”, and it’s not “good”.

And this is really concerning because it’s becoming so popular. Distrust the police, vilify law and order. Glorify resistance, even if it’s violent, just for the sake of having a certain oppressor/oppressed rhetoric. The “wrong” people are unredeemable and unforgivable and “deserve nothing good”. The “right causes” are an excuse for you to do something illegal (steal, assault, etc). Ultimately, even kill. At that point down the rabbit hole, you are just as bad.
