Humans create diversions- an act of diverting to something because it’s enjoyable, entertaining, or pleasent. Or is it just the opposite, the hope that it will make us feel important, valuable, or perceived as being aware. At the end of the day a lot of people struggle with self-identity. Who am I? What is my purpose? We all desire to belong.
Our motivations often reveal what our heart is feeling. What we choose to divert to is everywhere: money, trends, religion, our music, our busy schedules.
Money, provides material power;
Trends, we want to be perceived as being “aware” and “up-to-date” and “relevant”. We desire to belong.
Religion, people turn to all kinds of religions and gods because they find them helpful, a sense of purpose;
Music, helps us find a place of belonging, identity. “This is my group, they understand me.”
Busy Schedules, ball games, friends, events, sports practice, television, all these diversions suffocate our souls because we use them to silence the noise in and around us.
When we slow down, a certain uneasiness appears to let us know we treasure diversion.
Then we ask questions of ourselves (even if we don’t voice them)
What does God want from me?
Why do I feel lonely?
Why can't I control my emotions?
Why am I afraid?
Why can't I stop being angry?
But instead of allowing ourselves to ponder and live with these questions, we find something else to take our thoughts. Maybe we skip tracks to a better song.
It’s not a question of whether or not we have uneasiness or not. We all have it at some level. It’s more a question of where we’ll go to deal with it.
New International Version 1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7The Message (MSG)
6-7 So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.
