anyway while we're on the topic Flowery-Queen parallels are not to be underestimated. wanting to make a beautiful wonderful world for the Lightners you cherish (specifically this one girl with such depressing searches, specifically the man that poured love and hope into raising your flowers) and getting stuck in the crosshairs of "I want to help" and "they don't want my help." plus both actually being rather easy to talk down if you approach it a certain way ("hey Queen did you know about the Roaring. crazy shit huh" vs "actually i dont think infinite flower world 5ever is a great idea")

also they're both silly goofy whimsical. Imagine Queen Deltarune with an anime introduction sequence. Thank you.

I like how Flowery champions self-determination like he knows allllll about it and like he's just being a chipper helpful mentor dreamer guy by paying it forward and saying See? You Can Be More Than Your Circumstances! but when you actually look at it Flowery's own self-determination and personal wishes are always always at odds with his desire to please Asgore

Flowery wants to push Ralsei out of her shell and show her she can be her own person— but he's also the one who insists she wear her hat and hide in the closet to prevent Asgore from seeing her (and realizing she looks like Asriel, presumably)

Flowery wants the flowers to be a loving family— but he also wants Asgore to be there and happy too, it's basically a non-negotiable, so he insists they keep trying to impress and aid him even when Asgore clearly doesn't care about them

Flowery does have his own agendas, but in the end, he's decided what he really wants most of all is just to make Asgore happy. Even though, objectively, he has so much else going for him-- the other flowers, the Darkners, even Susie and Ralsei-- he'll always be stuck stalling on the idea of Asgore, of endlessly trying to please his Lightner. He's such a hypocrite.

to be clear i am deliberately using words like "his desire" and "he decided" when describing Flowery's approach here. i'm specifically batting against "Enlightened Free Thinker" Flowery in this post but do not be fooled, he isn't completely swept up in the tides of fate either. this is a choice he's making. a dogshit choice that i am judging him for, but a choice nonetheless. he's choosing to continue prioriziting Asgore despite getting nothing but lukewarm reactions that make all the flowers sad. good job flowery.

something abt the way asgore loses his position in the Family and turns that energy towards nurturing his flowers. as a result he becomes as a father to the six color flowers, until the dark fountain grants them the approximate personhood to actually interact with him as children would, upon which point he becomes emotionally neglectful to them.

it's just that like. if I were writing a story, and somebody said, "I think that character in your story is a trans woman," and I didn't want them to think that. I would probably avoid a scene where I have someone hand that character a trans flag and call them princess. And I wouldn't change what pronouns I use for them, or have them tumble out of a closet at their introduction. Oh and I wouldn't have a scene where they get really excited about the idea of being a princess instead of a prince

in hindsight, growing up as an aromantic person who didn't know aromanticism was a thing...it woulda been really easy for me to assume that something was wrong with me, that I was "broken" or "missing" some piece of humanity.

luckily I was autistic, oblivious, and had a huge ego. it literally never occurred to me to frame it as a "me" problem. i just thought every single person i knew was a dumbass
