I heard it was that time of year again.
One of my parent friends attended a “kid friendly” new year celebration at the home of her well-off friends. Part of the idea was showing a recorded firework display on the big, shiny, expensive brand-new smart TV in the living room. Thus the small kids, aged 3 to 8 or so, could enjoy fireworks indoors, not waiting until midnight, and still enjoy the feeling of a new year party!
Unfortunately, part of the smart TV’s features and benefits was a function to responsively get louder in response to background noise, with the TV always trying to make itself the loudest thing in the room.
Experienced parents, upon hearing this, we all shared a moment of horror.
Imagine kids and a television battling it out to be heard above each other.
That family created their own hell.
My approach to modern technology is to disable, remove, or block any function I do not want, such as any fucking ai.
A friend once called this approach "gutting tech" but I disagree with that name. I am not gutting anything, I am cutting out cancerous tumors until nothing but the guts are left.

happy pride month everybody
if you work in a creative field...or if you do creative hobbies like writing or drawing...you need to make friends with people who don't do those things. you need to befriend normie Steve who has never written a story in his life. and this is because when you are in a creative job or hobby and spend all your time doing that thing, surrounded by very capable people, who you inevitably compare your own progress and skills to, you forget what the baseline human skill at that thing is. and it's usually zero. normie Steve has not written a story since the 3rd grade when his teacher made him do it. he's very good at other things that are not storytelling - but if you tell normie Steve that you wrote a full 300-page book from start to finish, he will think you're some kind of savant. he does not know ANYONE else who has done this. you need this perspective. because when you're constantly on Let's Write Stories dot Com then everyone on Let's Write Stories dot Com will inevitably be like "oh of course everyone on earth has written a book or several at this point!" and you canNOT let yourself think that. that is not even close to the average human experience. you are in a bubble. do not put yourself down. do not give up.
If you see this:
It’s okay to sit down while doing anything in the kitchen. You don’t even need to be disabled or chronically ill. Your feet do not need any excuses. Rest them
It’s okay to cut potatoes in front of the tv while sitting on the couch.
Abled folks could learn a lot from the measures disabled folks take to adapt to their conditions and hack their environment and daily tasks so it benefits them in all the possible ways.
And - it is an investment in future self to learn the skill of adaptation should one fall ill or disabled for any reason.

this heatwave is gonna kill me (I prayed for this weather for months)
this may be my age showing but I am a passionate supporter of wires. earbuds? put a leash on those things. wireless keyboard? no, it needs to hold hands with the computer. the ps5 controller I forgot to charge has the staying power of a wealthy nonagenarian with a much younger wife and 14 life insurance policies, but the controller plugged into my pc? that baby will outlive my bloodline. my ethernet cable is like a son to me.
I haven’t said anything interesting in a long while. this will continue
