Due to my weird childhood and my weird brain, I have this very unhelpful compulsion to conceal Everything I do from Everyone. I Cannot be observed performing any action, no matter how mundane. My nervous system is convinced I'm gonna, like, Get In Trouble for eating food at dinnertime or sleeping in my bed at bedtime.

I've taken to asking myself, "Okay does this task actually require subterfuge or am I stealing a balloon on Free Balloon Day"

A more comprehensive list with some explanations can be found here for London in the year 1721. Notably there were many more deaths in childbirth, which was a significant killer that year.

However, while gender is not specified, the same year had:

Fever deaths: 3,331

Tuberculosis deaths: 3,188

Smallpox deaths: 2,375

Old age deaths: 2,309

Heart failure deaths: 903

Dysentery deaths: 697

Burned and scalded combined is a grand total of 9 people.

Numbers from that first table:

Stillborns = 14/189 = 7% of deaths

Babies under a year old = (11 + 27)/189 = 20% of deaths

Children under the age of five = (11 + 27 + 29 + 28)/189 = 50% of deaths

In a town of 7500 people, in one year, they had nearly 100 babies and small children die.

Those are heartbreaking numbers. They roughly match what I expected for the time, but still: ouch.

and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.

Something that tilts me about the way online culture has developed is that it feels like no one knows how to be a proper fucking provocateur anymore. Like people have been making "edgy" art for as long as the written word has existed but there is a certain social contract that comes with putting something out into the world that you know will offend people, which is that the offense is to be expected. It annoys me to no end when someone puts something out into the world that is so obviously offensive in some way shape or form and then spends all day complaining about people trying to "cancel" them or that no one respects "free expression" or that their critics are being "puritanical" or whatever. Like I'm sorry if you're going to say something obviously provocative I don't wanna hear you whining like a little bitch baby when people are provoked. Cause like no shit my guy what did you think was going to happen????

I mean. That obviously wouldn’t work for many reasons, although I do believe if you required spelunkers to wear a suicide bomb to go caving, it would not be a major deterrent.

They'd be pissed off that the belt is too bulky and they can't squeeze through teeny tiny crevices that require you to avoid breathing until you're through or your ribs won't fit

Personally I think we should make all spelunkers wear bulky vests like those people who tie a wooden spoon to a tiny dog's back so it can't slip through the bars of a property fence. Stop 'em from getting in those positions in the first place.
