New from JSTOR Daily: Meet Rollerena, New York Cityâs roller-skating Fairy Godmother!
In flowing gowns, vintage skates, rhinestoned glasses, and elaborate hats, Rollerena became a beloved presence in queer New York. She appeared at Pride marches and legendary nightclubs, using performance to create joy and make queer life more visible in public. During the AIDS crisis, Rollerena became an ACT UP activist and helped rally her community around creative expression and collective action. A newly digitized archive from Reveal Digital preserves the flyers, photographs, speeches, and collages that document her remarkable public life.
Read Emilie Hardmanâs story about a queer icon who understood the political power of being seen.

I pulled my sister in law for the family holiday gift swap this year and I'm vibrating with excitement. I've been wanting to get her for years. she's the most basic woman I've ever met and I mean that with admiration that borders on fear. Her house is full of inspirational quotes in cursive. Her bathroom has a "Lashes Long Coffee Strong" poster and she doesn't even drink coffee. Her makeup is Did. Her hair is Did. She is fashionably tipsy at every occasion. She sells bougie wine for a living and brings a hair curler with her on vacation. She is the maximalist luxury target consumer for literally everything. I am obsessed with her the way a gay man is obsessed with Liza Minelli. I would buy her a pink rhinestone car with lashes on the headlights if it wasn't a bit outside the secret santa spending limit.
Ideas I've had so far:
A gold plated wine opener with her name engraved on it
some kind of classy-but-cunty Christmas decor. Something chi-chi and sparkly that's giving "oh, it's Christmas, bitch"
one of those instax mini cameras in a color like "blossom pink" because you know this diva scrapbooks
those little bone china Tiffany's cups that are made to look like cheap disposable paper cups but they're Tiffany blue and they say "Tiffany's" on them (because you know this diva is obsessed with Tiffany's)
a Swarovski birthstone bracelet because you know this diva actually gives a shit about her birthstone
I hope none of this comes off as sarcastic because if my kidneys were gold and made by Louis Vuitton I'd give her one of those. This woman is delightful and friendly and warm and organizes the family photo with an air of command fit for a British naval commodore. She is more self-actualized than me, she is happier than me, her chi is clean, and she still talks about her quinceaĂąera. Her wedding was "Tuscan-themed." How do I please this perfect angel. What should be my tribute

"gender is a social construct": fairly easy for leftists to understand
"race is a social construct": a bit harder to swallow for some but still reasonable
"mental illness is a social construct": this one gets you hate mail in your inbox
Gotta add previous tags on here, because this is gonna live rent free in my head from now on. The stars are real, constellations are not. Damn. Tags by @smoreofbabylon (if you donât want me to put you on blast like this Iâll delete lol!)
Googled something about quick hydration and it suggested big jug of water, couple tbsp pickle juice, dash of lime juice.
Its surprisingly tasty????
Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.
-ancient roman posca: water, red or white wine vinegar, honey, salt, herbs (coriander, mint, thyme)
-switchel: water, ginger, vinegar, sweetener, lemon, salt
-ayran: yogurt, water, salt, mint
-Agua pepino: water, cucumbers, lime, sugar, optional mint.
I have been reminded of:
-shrub: vinegar, sida water, elderberry (or other berry), sugar.
I have now been informed of
-sekanjabin: honey, vinegar, mint, water.
"Wow, I wonder why this post was popular this week."
-sees the reports of the heatwave in Europe-
"... ah."
So, Iâve been pulled over a few times in my life. Not many, but a few. And Iâve also been in a couple of cars that got pulled over. And let me tell you, if you were actually doing something wrong, the officer doesnât make any small talk, just straight into âI clocked you doing 70 in a 55.â The only time Iâve ever gotten the âdo you know why I pulled you over?â was the time when I wasnât doing anything wrong, and I got let go even though he insisted to the end that I was doing 87 in a 70 (white privilege at work).
âDo you know why I pulled you over?â is a trap. It means thereâs a good chance the officer doesnât actually have a good reason to ticket you, and is trying to get you to waive your 5th Amendment rights and incriminate yourself. If you make a guess, thatâs a confession of guilt.
But thereâs another trap, that Iâve heard of but havenât yet experienced. Itâs âdo you know how fast you were going?â With that one, theyâre hoping youâll say no, because then they can name whatever speed they want â you just said you didnât know how fast you were going, if you deny the speed they name then youâre lying to them.
Oh, Iâve had that one. Go with âyes.â Donât give them a number, just say âYes.â Then they still have to offer a number and you can deny it without contradicting yourself. They could just ask you, at that point, but thatâs suspiciously similar to saying they donât know, and they tend to avoid doing that.

if you scroll past this just because it doesnât affect you personally, i see you.
Also, you can always go to court and contest a ticket, and a lot of times youâll win. Or if the cop thinks youâll win they wonât even show up and youâll win by default.
They like to target out of state plates because anyone who would be majorly inconvenienced by a court date two months away is a lot more likely to just pay it.
Do you have any recs for grammer checks that aren't gen ai? Especially for people like me who aren't native speakers and don't have anyone to beta read it would be really helpful.
Don't use any of them myself (they didn't work that well even before genAI), but after a few searches I might have a good answer!

Maryland vs peta
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
Itâs a universally known fact that you donât fuck with our crab cakes here in Maryland.
Unfortunately, that second billboard is a photoshopped fake. BUT the real billboards that went up are just as fun!
So PETA put up that top billboard in 2018 in Baltimore, and the restaurant across the street, Jimmyâs Famous Seafood, put up a response. They also debuted a beer called, appropriately, PETA Tears, but I digress.
The ME was a subtle call out, a warning shot if you will.
But earlier this year (2023) right in time for Lent in very catholic Baltimore, PETA decided to try again.
To which Jimmyâs decided fuck that, letâs get two billboards this time. (WaPo)
No lie, âsavor the sacrificeâ is my new favorite tag line.
*peers out the window* Weird shit, mostly. It's fun living here.
You donât get between a Marylander and their crabs.
