A small section of the illustration I’m doing for a local restaurant. All dot shading, and about twenty hours of work. Which most likely means the whole piece will take about 100-120 more hours. Don’t ask me why I decided to do a dot shaded piece on 22x30 inch paper. I’m wondering that myself. Out loud. Several times a minute.
I Wonder What My Cat Thinks
I wonder what it is my cat ponders. That is, if he is cogitating. His large almond eyes stare widely at my movements and he has this ‘look’ in him, almost as if he is deeply interested at what action I’m portraying. If there were an english interpretation of his thoughts they’d spell out, why? What is that and how is it apart of her? Is that a natural object? If a thought process is present in his fragile mind, then it’s probable he is terribly confused. It’s like he is a harmony of intrusive thought and reflexivity combined with inherent instinct and natural value. But it seems as though his thoughts are trapped behind is small skull, and although he can be reluctant to unsure, frightful human activities, such as vacuuming, he remains cool and collective. After all, he is a creature of adaptation. There are no house cats in the wild, or should I say; there ‘were’ never house cats in the wild. As a specie of inconceivable deliberation it is not surprising that we would gain the tools and skill to tamper with other species and nominate them as leisure companions. This can either be genuinely scientific or obtrusively wrong.

Nick, I do follow groups of people at a time, but only people who appear to be real, have like-minded music tastes, and are either active or pursuing some sort of artistically inclined career; like myself. This blog was meant to be a practice blog and my twitter hasn't had much activity recently because I've been focusing on writing and creating music. People sometimes wonder why “stupid” trends follow. For example, why does planking have such a strong following? In social psychology, it’s called social proof. We follow the crowd, because it’s convenient and it easily blends you in with the group, which avoids conflicts. A good example of following social proofs is when you just got out of your train. You never been in this train station before so you have no idea where to go. Instinctively you follow the rest of the train passengers, because it’s the easiest and least confusing way. This makes life more convenient with this shortcut. However, following these shortcuts too closely results in dangerous effects.
In a famous case, Catherine Genovese was murdered in the Queens, New York despite her calls for help for around 30 minutes. There were 38 witnesses in the buildings who peered outside to see what was happening. However, no one called the police despite her pleads for help. The problem was these witnesses assumed another person will call the police. So the next witness assumed the neighbor would call, but that neighbor believed another one would call and so on. This diffusion of responsibility is disastrous for the victim.
Another key problem with crowds is the lack of certainty of the situation. People are more likely to help if they know the situation is deadly. If there is uncertainty, people are more reluctant to help. For example, people would usually pass a person laying on the ground on a college campus. This is because they might assume this person is hungover, rather in actual danger. This is of course dangerous to the victim, who may actually need help. Since you see everyone else ignoring this person, you will also ignore the person because of social proof.
In order to combat such a situation to save your or somebody’s life, you must assign a role to a witness. For example, if you are having a heart attack and you collapse on the busy streets of New York, you must immediately call for help of a specific person. This makes the person responsible for your well being. If you call out for help without specifying, the chances of being helped are reduced because each person assumes someone else will help. By assigning a role to someone to assist AND making it certain to them it’s an emergency, they will most likely help you.
That’s my psychology thought of the day.
