things some people, especially people who are new to ao3 or fandom/fanfic space as a whole, seem to not understand:

archive of our own is an archive. not a social media.

archive of our own was built with the stance that there would be no censorship, because other platforms already had censorship where some things that were taboo were reported/removed. ao3 was built with the purpose that all of these works, that were not allowed on other platforms, would be allowed on ao3.

the archive will house anything that’s considered fanworks. so no, you cannot report this fic because it portrays in explicit details taboo topics about xyz, you cannot report that fic because it romanticizes and glorifies xyz. ao3 will not remove any of those fics, because whether or not you like it, those fics do not go against ao3’s terms of service.

“but these things are not allowed on other platforms” that’s precisely why ao3 was created, to house and give a platform to these things that were censored/banned/removed from other platforms.

if you have a problem with this, you can use other platforms to post and read fanfics

but you should also know that ao3 by far has the best tagging system, meaning you won’t get anything like what ao3 provides on other platforms, meaning it may be a pain in the ass for you to find a fic with the prompts and pairing you’re looking for, meaning you may still get jump scared by things that are triggering to you half way through your reading of what you thought was an innocent fic. because other platforms don’t have tagging systems, where you can find and avoid any character/pairing/tag as you please, like ao3.

i think it's quite harmful to share the mindset that basically anything goes on ao3. yes, tags and filtering are super helpful to avoid your dislikes, but because of how many "taboo topics" are written, it's more challenging to find what i want when i have to scroll past abuse, mental health glorification, etc. i think authors need to really take some time to self evaluate and really come to terms with what they're writiinf and if it's that important to be written.

actually, authors can write whatever they want because they write for themselves. not. for. you.

we don't have to cater to your personal liking or comfort because we fucking write whatever the hell we want for ourselves. we are our main audience and priorities. and we already tag our warnings, it's your job to avoid them.

also if you actually filter out tags about topics you don't like, you won't have to scroll past most of the things you don't like, because every fic that's tagged as such just won't show up on your screen at all

Ah yes, and here we have tumblr user "innocent bean" telling AO3 to abandon the mission they were created for, and fan authors to shut up and conform all of their fic to what "innocent bean" wants to read.

Tony refusing to do anything but sit there and watch while Peter rides him and does everything himself so he can claim on a technicality that he never fucked Peter. Going off of the whole "Peter makes Tony into an AI" trope: Peter makes it as close to the real man as possible, having used a countless number of resources from FRIDAY to get it just right. After a couple years pass, the AI begins to behave a little unexpectedly, calling Peter "sweetheart" and making very suggestive comments. Peter runs a report, but finds nothing wrong. Apparently it was inevitable for Tony to eventually fall for Peter. And that realization breaks Peter's heart.

Posting this on my Starker blog because I don't have an active Hannibal one right now, but:

As someone who grew up in the south, in a similar but slightly better upbringing than what we heard about for Will, I can just about guarantee you it WAS worse than the show implied. If you were poor in the south, then you held down jobs through connection. The "good ol' boy" network.

The fact that Will's dad couldn't hold down a job and stay stable in one place with a kid speaks volumes. He didn't (wouldn't? couldn't?) make connections like that. Which meant the jobs he did get were the jobs no one else wanted to do either because of what they were or what they paid. Regardless, it undoubtedly ended up with Will being underfed and in less than ideal clothes and housing circumstances. And for a parent to just...deal with that, with a kid? I'm not saying that his dad didn't have the potential to be a good father, and I'm not saying that parents who can't provide these things for their kid are bad parents. But it does imply a pattern of behavior where:

1, keeping Will was more important than handing him over to the state for his own protection, whether due to Bill's pride/ego or some other reason. (This is the most arguable reason as to why they moved around so often in my opinion.)

2, Bill had such a personality to him that he couldn't or wouldn't make connections enough to grow his network and find a stable place to settle down even at a lower income.

or

3, Bill simply not caring about Will enough to do these things for him and following his own wants and needs above his sons, which therefore implies the capacity for much worse behavior.

And each of these three distinct, easily spotted patterns are bad enough on their own, but in reality it was likely a combination of them. That's why I can see how fandom reads into it so much more deeply than the showrunners did. For them, they're looking at present and future of this character. For the fandom, we're looking at how his past influences his actions in the present, which influence in the future. We're all constantly thinking about our past in one way or another, even if it's just "yeah that brand of coffee was ever so slightly weird that one time so I don't get it anymore." With fanfic, you have to weave the tapestry of the character and their history is a huge part of that, so it's pretty necessary to dip into it. So when you don't have a lot to go on, you take what building blocks you do have and extrapolate.

In Will's case...the extrapolation just isn't pretty.

In society, an Omega's sole purpose is to act as a servant to the Alphas until they become breeding property.

An Alpha, Tony Stark, gets sent to an Alpha boarding school for his senior year, having been kicked out of all his previous schools for his behavior and insubordination. His first week there, he manages to come across one of the school's Omega servants, Peter, as he was scrubbing the floor on his hands and knees.

While Tony was captivated by the boy, the other Alphas merely laughed as one kicked over Peter's bucket of water, spreading it across the floor.

In the middle of the night, unable to sleep, Tony found himself going to the school's library. There, hidden amongst the piles of books was Peter, his nose buried in the pages as he slowly attempted to read the words in dim candlelight.

When their eyes met, Peter panicked and began to hyperventilate, knowing that he was going to be brutally punished for being found.

Tony immediately calmed him down and promised that he would keep quiet. He discovered that the boy had been teaching himself to read, something that was expressly forbidden for Omegas. However, with his limited access, he was struggling to learn on his own.

The Alpha wasn't sure what came over him, but he immediately offered to help the boy learn as much as he possibly could.

From then on, they snuck around, secretly meeting in the middle of the night for the tutoring sessions. Sure, Tony slept very little and would fall asleep in class the following days, but it was abundantly clear that he was willing to do anything he could to make the Omega smile.
