“This is your last chance. Free us or die.”
ORION:
orion huffed in annoyance and frustration as her eyebrows furrowed. “is there anyway to contact someone from outside? any smugglers that would be willing to do something for us?” she asked, mostly thinking out loud. orion shook her head, her brown eyes flickering to the document she was trying to read, her gaze read over the same paragraph at least three times. “i just… don’t understand why,” she sighed.
❛ IT’S A GOOD IDEA , but i don’t see it coming to fruition . i don’t think . . . we have the time for it . ❜ he looks towards her as he speaks , before turning away once more , frustration inevitably shown upon his features . ❛ besides , i have a theory . . . things aren’t the same as the last time this virus struck . it’s smarter , faster . whoever did this had access to both nuvo vindi’s research on the blue shadow virus , and probably the cure too . ❜ he shakes his head , contemplating expression on his face . ❛ no , the same methods for a rescue won’t work . ❜ it takes a moment before he realizes he’s saying all the wrong things — those infected were their friends , her friends , and the concept there was no base to formulate a conclusion to this saga over . . . he sighs , running a hand through his hair . ❛ people thrive off chaos , and will endanger innocents to do it . we’ll find them , orion . the perpetrator and the cure . ❜
VARAN:
he knew this day would come. time punishes those who have made rotting choices, making him WAIT for a reunion he never asked for, never wanted. ( but he did. ) varan knows why he’s alive, of course. it seems even luke skywalker isn’t exempt to having to return to this hell that the universe has created. still, he had hoped he was rid of him, once and for all. luke is the ONLY breathing person who can rightfully say that he pulls varan towards something so human, it’s almost tangible. and that’s why varan would rather see him dead than before him, asking him how he is. he’s become a stranger to kindness. even when others ask about how he’s doing, there’s a part of him that knows they only ask out of pity, or with hopes of stirring conversation. never because there’s a deep-set alignment of a true caring nature for such an idiotic boy. ( he likes to tell himself he hates luke, but such a fragile mind can only take so many lies at once. ) “ i am, for now. ” he looks away from him, then, eyes devoid of light. “ you don’t have to do that with me, you know. pretend that me being on this side of the glass isn’t a blessing. ”
IT PAINS HIM , to acknowledge the distance that’s grown between them since that inarticulate night . the glass barrier between them seems a physical representation of their relationship , shields erupted and trust broken as varan goes one way that night , alongside the youngest skywalker , while luke stays planted where he is , within the rubble of his home and amongst the corpses of his pseudo children . does he think the worst of him now ? has varan too let him go as ben did so quickly and without remorse — is it easy to turn your back on family ? is it justice to be faulted for letting yourself be overcome with fears of becoming stuck within a cycle of darkness that plagues your family like their very own ghost ? he seeks to look away from the child himself , to rip his eyes away from the sight of the one of the many he failed the most — yet he can’t , a plea in his eyes for . . . for forgiveness ? he’s not sure himself . ❛ do you think so little of me , varan ? ❜ the name holds much weight upon his heart , a betrayal akin to ben’s . ❛ no matter your . . . allegiance , i’ll never stop caring about you . ❜
ROSE:
Rose sees that crack in Luke’s face– a reminder that the leaders were feeling the heavy weight of pressure to find something to save those on Naboo. Rose hopes they can find the cure soon– and she knows she won’t stop working until someone finds it. “I won’t,” Rose said. “It’s all I can really hold onto right now.” Rose had to have faith, otherwise she would end up in a downwards spiral of anxiety and fear for what may happen. So she refused to entertain any of those thoughts.
HE LIKE THAT about her , the firm determination not to give in when the going gets tough . war brings out the worst in people — and then there’s those who refuse to give up , and bring out their very best , compassion integrated into their every thoughts . rose , he thinks , is one of them , with a passion for justice and thrown so far into a game played out by the rich and powerful , governed by the rules of loss — life wasn’t fair to the kind and hopeful . ❛ i know the feeling , ❜ he says eventually , discovering he’s not really soaking anything in , reading the same passage four times over now to no avail . ❛ i’m sure we’ll find something on the computer , anything tampered with right now is top of the list for possible clues . ❜
JYN:
jyn snorts, shaking her head. he’s so certain that’ll he save them all––luke skywalker, hero of the rebellion, he who can do no wrong, he who saves everyone––but she knows how these things work. his hopeful optimism sounds fake, and it doesn’t do anything to make her feel better. “you can’t…know that,” she rasps, unable to hide the hint of fear that creeps into her voice. “it’s fine, luke. i should have…died a long time ago.” scarif hadn’t killed her, but it should’ve.
his mention of the cure team makes her pause. ever since she’d told (well, snapped at, more or less) cassian to leave in hopes that he would start caring about his health. however, despite the fact that he hadn’t come back (he’s abandoned her, jyn knows, he won’t be coming back), he has a single-minded determinedness that makes her believe that he would want to be a part of it. “cassian––” she coughed, unable to get the words out before a fit overtook her. “if he’s on the cure team––you’ll look after him, won’t you? you…owe me. please, luke. when i’m––when i’m gone, he’ll be…he’ll be in a bad place.” she doesn’t want to die, but she isn’t one to give false hope when there isn’t any chance of her surviving.
DOESN’T IT GET TIRING , he wants to ask , being so pessimistic all the time , so sure things will never work in her favor ? it’s the hand life has dealt her , he figures it having shaped her ideals to reflect the loss that follows her closer than her own shadow . yet , no matter how presumptuous he’s being in his conclusions towards her character , he wonders how one lives life in such a way , without touching the tip of happiness and enjoying it for all it’s worth , without the fear it’ll be snatched like everything else always has . ❛ if you’re going to give up so quickly , then perhaps you’re right . ❜ he has no right to say it the way he does , a hint of steely anger disguised with nonchalance — yet no life is worth throwing away , especially not hers.
HE SIGHS , running a hand through his hair as he paces away for a moment , collectively taking a few breathes . she’s so prepared to die — perhaps the whole reason he’s so offended on her behalf is the fact she reminds him a little of himself after he failed his family , and by extension the galaxy as a whole with the introduction of a new evil . ahch - to had been his version of a quarantine of a sorts , yet he MADE the choice , jyn was simply giving into her circumstances . ( it’s all very complicated . ) he approaches the glass again with a calmer exterior and it takes him a moment before he nods , unable to look in the eyes . ❛ if it comes down to it , i will . you have my word . ❜ but it won’t , you’ll be fine , sits on his lips , this time unsaid and recognized as futile . ❛ if you can . . . take care of my sister , please . you don’t . . . you don’t need to do anything , just , ❜ he stops for a moment , struggling . ❛ i don’t want her to be alone . ❜
REY:
as soon as his own hand pressed to the glass, right where hers was, rey gasped softly and quickly looked into his eyes again, her expression that of shock. she recalled her encounter in the cave on ahch-to, where the multiple versions of herself led only to a reflection of her own self. it felt and looked very much like this moment; except now there was someone on the other end. it may not have been her parents, but it was the one person she had managed to find refuge in. she winced softly, practically feeling his warmth and comfort through the glass. she took a deep breath and closed her eyes at his instruction, using her spare hand to quickly brush her tears from her cheeks as he directed her to. “i-i trust you…” she whispered, opening her eyes to look into his again. finally a faint smile of her own appeared, and she rested her forehead against the glass. “i trust you more than anyone in the galaxy…” possibly even ben, somehow, purely because of their troubled past. but luke… he had never done her wrong. and never would.
A RUSH OF WARMTH engulfs him , as calloused fingers remain kissing the glass between them , features perhaps never more gentle and open towards an individual since his self - imposed exile upon ahch - to . so she does trust him ; a part of him sings in contentment ( he never could stand the idea of letting down those he loves , the wholesome concept of how family will always be . . . family , though thick and thin ) and the spread of a large smile against his features is undeniable . an almost bashful look , as he looks down towards his feet , composing his thoughts , before he locks eyes with his pseudo daughter once more . ❛ then trust me to find the cure . take care of everyone in there with you . ❜ a pause , clear struggle to formulate his next request into words , and his tone softens further , almost vulnerable . ( an undeniable vice , an open book when it came to his emotions ) ❛ take care of leia . ❜

ORION:
“i just don’t understand why they’ve made this cure so damn difficult to find. and whoever released it is an absolute nerfherder,” orion grumbled, resting her forehead against a box. she knew that she was acting like a child but it was the only thing that was distracting her from thinking about people like rey and jyn and gael, having to be cooped up in quarantine as they waited for the teams to find something. but nothing helped and getting frustrated at the fact that they hadn’t found anything yet was dampening her already soiled mood. “do you understand any of this?” orion asked, gesturing to the room.
❛ the last time the outbreak occurred , a cure was only accessible off - planet , and since we’re stuck here . . . ❜ a grimace . ❛ but there’s bound to be at least A CLUE somewhere here —- something will leads us on the right path , i’m confident of it . ❜ he flips through the folder in his hand , eyes moving quickly across the pages for a hint , something relating back to the blue shadow virus before sighing and throwing yet another one into the read pile . ❛ no , ❜ he says eventually , lips pressed together in frustration as the pile of files grows smaller by the second , yet they seemed to remain NO CLOSER to finding a hint . ❛ whoever did this hid their tracks well , as did their predecessors . ❜
ROSE:
Rose has lost many people in her life. Her parents. Her grandparents. Her sister. Her friends. But now she was being faced with the threat of loss again and that weighed heavily on the girl. What if she couldn’t save them? Rose wouldn’t know what to do if she lost her friends because she couldn’t save them. “Luke…” she trailed off. “None of these notes I found make any sense. Please tell me someone has found something that’s helpful?”
NOTHING . at least , nothing yet and the knowledge leaves a noticeable crack in his poker face , he thinks , a quick turn of his lips in her direction before he’s shaking his head and turning back to the papers in his hands . ❛ just a few vials missing , and a curious computer — they’re checking it out right now . we’ll find something , don’t lose hope . ❜ he believes in rose with every fibre of his being —- he may not know her as well as he knows the others , but his senses have generally never led him too astray and he knows she’s well deserving of his complete trust , a kindred being of a sorts . if anyone understands the importance of HOPE , he knows it’s her .
WEDGE:
really, wedge knows he’s useless for any of the deep scientific work. at some point he’s just going to be a runner, moving things from one end of the facility to the other because that’s about all he can do. he narrows his eyes a little over at luke. “you say that now, but you would start regretting it within a week. i’d ruin your whole life in forty-eight hours.” he sounds very certain of this fact. but wedge has nothing if not willpower, so maybe there’s more behind the threat than most might think.
he’s sort of hoping, since wedge knows very little about the force, that luke will miraculously pick up the correct paper and solve the whole problem. there. everything’s finished. he has a feeling that’s really not going to work out, though, so here they stand. “i’d say just about anything that looks tampered with seems suspicious, considering the state of this whole building.” he moves a few papers around, stacking them neatly.
wedge pauses for a long moment. then: “me too.” he sets a hand on luke’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “but - we’ve got this. do the impossible every time, right? no matter what it takes.”
❛ YOU ARE PRETTY ANNOYING , ❜ he concedes after a moment , hiding a smile as he turns to pick up a file off the ground , immediately rustling through the contents . ❛ leia would probably say that makes us a good match , considering she doesn’t shut up around how annoying I AM . don’t know how she picked that idea though , i think to think i’m pretty decent . ❜ he chuckles quietly for a moment before a frown settles on his lips . the mention of his sister feels like a bucket of cold water to the face , as if he’s swallowed a bitter pill of reality —- a reminder she too sits under quarantine , not yet coughing red ( a small relief ) and yet behind the glass never the less .
HE BLINKS IN SURPRISE at the contact , before offering a small smile at the other’s words , a comfort in times where a heaviness sat upon his heart . ❛ no matter what it takes , ❜ he repeats back at wedge , paired together with a small nod before his attention goes back to the folder . he makes out the words VIRUS and AIRBORNE , ❛ hmm . ❜ —- but nothing of a CURE , and decides it’s at least worthy taking back with him . ❛ it’s troubling we haven’t found anything concrete yet . . . the perpetrator was smart . probably been planning the whole thing for a while now . ❜ the thoughts sits uneasy upon his mind , picking up something new to plow through .
REY:
temporarily, rey allowed herself to forget everything that had come between them as of late. essentially… ben, and their differing opinions on him. they both knew it was something that could never truly impact their personal relationship ( still she sometimes caught herself referring to him as her father ), but it had weighed heavily on their bond. however, none of that mattered now, as she realized all she wanted in that moment was for him to hold her and comfort her as he did so well. “please, i-i can’t- i wanna s-see you…” she begged, hands pressing firmer to the glass. as her sobs increased, though, the window began to tremble as her emotions fueled the force. much like they did on ahch-to, when having her force vision of the darkness. “please…”
THESE ARE TROUBLING TIMES , and luke doesn’t know where to begin , where to find the answer everyone is intent on finding . a pressure sits upon his shoulders , one that whispers into his ear ‘ FIND IT , they’re all counting on you once more ’ like the daemon of past success , haunting him with the knowledge with power comes great responsibility — in this case , THE CURE sat just beyond his fingertips and he fears ( especially now , staring into her tear - filled eyes ) he may never find it . ❛ you’re seeing me right now , ❜ he says with a small smile , a hand coming up to rest upon the glass , the exact spot where one of hers laid . ❛ i need you to be brave , rey . if not for yourself , then everyone else inside . show them you’re confident we’ll find the cure — because WE WILL , it’ll be alright . ❜ his expression grows softer , head tilting slightly . ❛ wipe your tears and TRUST ME . ❜
JYN:
jyn rolls her eyes, not at all pleased with his response and wanting him to know exactly what she thought of that. this place that they’d trapped them in––it’s nice, but she hates it all the same. she’s growing impatient, itching to get the hell out of this room and actually do something. either they’re going to find a cure in time or she’s going to die––and she sure as hell doesn’t want to die in a stuffy room filled with imperials.
“you rebels and your damn moral codes,” she snaps, even though she’s technically one of them now. she gets his point, really––she doesn’t want to risk cassian’s life, certainly––but that doesn’t mean she has to like it. her harsh words really aren’t directed at him; she likes luke, but this situation is only making her angry (and perhaps a little scared). “so you’re not going to get me out, fine. what are you going to do? tell me that it’s going to be all right and this damn disease isn’t going to kill me? because we both know––” a cough, “––we both know that isn’t true.”
❛ YOU’RE NOT GOING TO DIE . ❜ his tone is sharper than he intended , eyes narrowing as they remain fixated on her form . he counts on them to convey his absolutist stance on the topic — no one else will die , no more deaths , he’s counting on he and his team to deliver on the cure . despite the fear that has continued to rot his insides since the news first broke of the outbreak , alongside it remains some deliverance of hope , a reassurance for his self to revel in that they WILL SUCCEED once more ; they’ve done it before , they’ll do it again .
❛ we’re working on a cure around the clock , i’m just here to check up on everyone , make sure things haven’t . . . escalated . ❜ a pause , one he spends shifting his gaze upon the contents behind her , the other infected that coughed red and wheezed softly to themselves. ❛ and they haven’t , ❜ he offers , gaze steely , ❛ we’ll fix this . ❜
WEDGE:
this feeling of helplessness is something wedge can control. he can boil it down to facts. sure, it’s a little disconcerting that he can’t just shoot a virus down out of the sky, thus remedying the sense of helplessness, but he has poured all of that nervous energy into grim determination.
he hears footsteps and glances up in the midst of setting down a pile of folders and papers. luke stands in the doorway. some part of wedge is still relieved every time he sees him.
“you never know,” he points out. “so if it does turn out to be the dust in here, luke, i’m going to haunt your ass forever. don’t think i won’t.”
it’s a promise as luke approaches and settles next to him, the two of them observing papers together. there’s nostalgia here in the moment, the two of them staring down at battle plans and personnel reports. wedge sighs. “i’ve been gathering everything up that even mentions the virus, to be honest. just to have somewhere to start. you found anything?”
A CHUCKLE at wedge’s words , and luke finds comfort in the joke ( or at least , a semi attempt at the joke as he was pretty sure the other at least half meant it ) and the sound of his voice , the sense of familiarity it brought feeling a bit like home . ❛ i don’t know , bud . . . sounds kinda fun . i mean , an eternity with you by my side ? i wouldn’t expect any less . ❜
HE REACHES DOWN to rustle through some of the papers in front of him , with a desire to help get through what he can . nothing , however , jumps out at him to be valuable towards the topic at hand and yet , he continues leafing through them with half a conscious mind as he turns most of his attention back to the other . a grimace sets itself upon his lips . ❛ there’s a few vials missing in the greenhouse , i don’t know if that means something yet . plus , there’s something going on with the technology left behind here but the others are tinkering around on it . . . but so far , nothing concrete . ❜ he sighs , running a hand through his hair . ❛ i hate this . ❜
VARAN:
HE WAS LIKE A FATHER TO HIM. varan had never had known what having one was like. his first had died when he was young. ( as everyone seemed to do on a war-pervaded planet. ) his second, however, was everything varan had ever wanted to become. he sought to emanate his every aspect, whether it have been the way that he handled his lightsaber or simply the way that he addressed his students, those who were almost unworthy of learning from the jedi master, he wanted to be him. for the first time in years, a different expression crosses his features, subtly enough to be almost undetectable. one of fear, of doubt, of memories he had stowed away in a chest never to be opened.
he is like a father to him, not was. and varan is a spitting image of DISAPPOINTMENT. almost immediately, his fixes his form and crooked expression, refusing to allow his humanity to get the better of him. he looks at luke with hollow eyes, raising his head just a bit higher as he speaks to him through the tool they were given. his lips part twice, but he doesn’t know what to respond. finally, he chokes something out. “ you’re alive. ” is his tone cold ? pressing ? confused ? he doesn’t know. it’s more of an observation.
HIS PSEUDO SON ; perhaps not by blood but rather through the overwhelming sense of affection and wholehearted LOVE for his former padawan . he had held varan to a special degree after witnessing his mother die before his eyes and the responsibility of the child had fallen into his hands . . . the RESPONSIBILITY and promise he’d made , sworn to protect him with his life . spoiler : he failed . yet another weight upon his shoulders , a scar upon his heart serving as a reminder of yet another he’d disappointed , another whom had left him that day his life came crashing down upon him and burned away till only ashes and the smell of smoke remained ( it never quite went away ).
ALIVE ?? yes , luke supposes he is and he wonders whether the other considers it a curse or a blessing , whether he still cares for his former master . ❛ i am , ❜ he concedes with a slight nod , before his brows furrow together and head tilts in question . ❛ and so are you . . . i’m glad . ❜ is he though ? he would wish death upon no one , but rather justice for the wrong doings they had committed , and yet it feels almost cruel seeing his past apprentices before him , with where love had sat once now filled with hatred . ❛ are you . . . are you alright ? ❜ he switches the topic back to the reason he’d visited in the first place , the sickness that had engulfed his friends and family .
REY:
it felt like being locked in a prison cell, being stuck behind the glass like some sort of animal. though she was grateful to have ben there with her ( she would’ve broken out hours ago if he hadn’t been ), she was still terrified, and hated feeling so locked in. for a girl who had spent years traversing the open range of jakku, being trapped in this room for an unspecified amount of time struck fear in her heart. however, when her old master came to visit, she was able to at least move to the visitation window, hands pressing to the glass as she stared out it desperately. she shook her head at his question, taking small gasps of breath and blinking back her tears. “i-i’m so scared…” she admitted quietly, glancing over her shoulder then back at him with a small cough. “i wanna go home, please…”
IT TUGS AT HIS HEARTSTRINGS , the interaction and the way tears fill her eyes and how he’s at a loss to do . . . anything . every single one of his padawans were like his own children in a way , and it fills him with hurt , an ache , at the fact he can’t take away their suffering , can’t have them live in a galaxy where pain and the knowledge of darkness itself didn’t exist . he stops himself from reaching out , knowing it wouldn’t do him any good —- the glass was akin to the barrier he’d erupt around his heart after everything that had happened with his nephew , and then with rey , like a physical representation of his inner turmoil with his former apprentice(s) . ❛ we’re searching , rey . we’ll find a cure , just . . . sit tight and rest . you’ll be home soon . ❜
