What you've to realise is that its more easier to hate on the POC character (especially if its a man) and reduce them to a reactive and violent caricature than accept the fact that said character has ideals, aspirations and an agenda that does not revolve around the "empowered white feminist" female character.

Cause how dare he not kiss the ground Rhaenyra walks on? How dare he act against his "betters".

Every single decision he makes is reduced to "lol he did not get past the rejection" when it was a mutual rejection from both sides.

Rhaenyra refused to leave everything behind and leave with Cole (when she was wishing she could for years) and Cole refused to be her on-demand booty call and subsequently father her bastards.

What people don't realise is that Criston did in fact move on. He found his second chance at redemption with Alicent. He is devoted to her and is a father figure to her children and Team Black refuses to see that, cause why would they?

We've a tragic example of a common born son of a steward who rises through the ranks and earns his Knighthood through sheer merit, who wishes to no longer be a tool to the higher-ups and intends to go out on his own terms.

Criston Cole's mistake was to exist in a series where majority of the fans gorge themselves on the Targaryen supremacy idealogy like its the elixir of life and forsake the other characters as they are deemed "lesser".

I hate it when people in the asoiaf fandom act like the people of kings landing are evil for storming the dragonpit. I get that from an outside perspective to us as readers dragons are obviously magical, fascinating and feeling creatures but imagine you’re a peasant living in flea bottom: Your life genuinely sucks, you have to do whatever you can to scrape by, you can’t afford proper food oh and also your overlords hoard all of the wealth while fighting petty wars over the succession of the iron throne. Not only that but said overlords have the medieval fantasy equivalent of a nuke at their beck and call and wreak havoc on civilians in other places regularly😀 Is it so crazy to want that threat gone, even if it’s through violent means?

One thing I’ve found interesting about the Nettles discussion is that many people are drawing parallels that come very close to what happened with Jaime and Brienne in Game of Thrones. Nettles’ removal is, of course, compounded by the fact that racism clearly played a role in her erasure. But beyond that, the creative impulse feels strikingly similar: the showrunners fell in love with their own version of certain characters and prioritized preserving those portrayals over adapting the story they were given. That’s why Jaime’s arc was reworked to continue revolving around Cersei, why Brienne’s narrative importance was effectively erased and her arc was never adapted, and why Cersei’s role was continually expanded at the expense of multiple other storylines.

But I think more interestingly for Daemon is for the first time, he's doing something very self-interested, but he's doing it in the name of protecting his daughter, which we haven't really seen from him to date. It shows a more mature Daemon that's still Daemon. And I think that was the thing that we were really attracted to. And this is going to be a story that continues to obviously unfold, and evolve, and play out over the course of the season. We'll have ripple effects that take us all the way into the end of The Dance of the Dragons.”

So these jackasses confirmed they truly erased a canonical black character that challenged the idea of Targaryen supremacy, who’s storyline had repercussions beyond the dance, only so he could preserve this boring ass couple, avoid Rhaenyra being racist as she is in the OG material and completely derail Daemon’s arc. This guy has ZERO understanding of what the dance is about, of its characters, of its themes, of why Targaryens lost their dragons, of WHY Nettles was important in the story and the lore. We need to put out periodic reminders in fandom that trying to argue in favor of the divine right of kings or defending wartime atrocities or rich people's entitlement to the deference of indentured servants or whatever is, in fact, way less compelling and far stupider than just going well, that character is hot and this is fiction so I've decided it's all good.
