Where on earth did Enjolras get that fun red and gold vest he wears during act II? Did he already have it? Was it pilfered from a national guardsman? Is that his special revolution outfit? Truly where did he get it, because it’s not at all what the average student in the 1830s would be wearing day-to-day. It honestly looks like a military uniform with the sleeves cut off, which makes me think he took some guys jacket during the riots and then was like “these sleeves are too restrictive” and then Grantaire was like “yeah you should just rip them off. It’s way more practical really. Wow yeah that’s a great idea you should do that.”

This is so interesting to hear an openly gay actor talk about choosing to play Javert as a gay character too because it makes sense for him and his story arc and adds to him as a character! (Also “Happy Pride from Javert 🏳️‍🌈” 🥹❤️)

#it’s true and he should say it #Javert is GAY #there’s a lot of other things going on for him as well but it’s critical to the character that he is queer and cannot accept it #Hayden really just said ‘I think Javert is gay and I’ve just been playing him gay for the past 6 months’#it shouldn’t be revolutionary but it kind of is #there’s a reason he is obsessed with finding Valjean and the reason isn’t that he’s straight #like to read into his character in that way is not surprising or controversial or unusual at all and yet to hear him talk about it is great #Javert’s intersectionality is pivotal to his decision-making and how he sees right and wrong in the world #he’s enacting justice and control over the people that he sees himself in because he was taught to hate himself #born in a prison and becomes the prison guard and justice personified… like this man has issues! he was shaped by the injustice he faced #he’s just the other side of the coin to Valjean who chose kindness and acceptance… Javert chose to control and punish instead #I will never not be emotional about their parallels and how they were shaped by how society treated them #and if only Javert was a little braver or more self-aware he could have had the same redemption arc and second chance as Valjean did #(which is why I always stand by Javert not being the bad guy/villain and he deserves to be in the finale song) post-seine #(and why post-seine AUs are so interesting bc it explores all of that morality and self-insight for Javert if he survived the fall)#arghh when will I ever not talk about these two I swear the hold Les Mis had on my brain is forever #javert #valjean #valvert #anyway TLDR: javert can and should be read as gay not for fan reasons but bc it can give insight into his character and decisions he makes #les mis #hayden tee #les mierables #les mis us tour #les miserables

#enjolras is asexual for sure and probably aromantic #it’s stated in the book that he only has time for the revolution and how his ‘mistress’ is France because he is so dedicated to it #he does not have any romantic relationships and is confused by Marius getting distracted by his new love for Cosette #he does not notice or at least pretends not to notice Grantaire’s advances and does not knowingly flirt at anyone #Valjean is definitely and canonically aro and ace spectrum coded #this man has been surviving and escaping his whole life from poverty to prisoner and being on the run #he never had the luxury of exploring romantic or sexual feelings as a young man and it never became part of his life #I do like this topic being explored post-seine but even in a relationship with Javert it is not a traditional one #both if these men are repressed and traumatised and also on the aroace spectrums and have moral issues around sex #and no experience of sex or intimacy if any form even or even had any friendships so it’s a whole thing for them to navigate #Javert is also definitely somewhere in the aro scale depending on the timelines #none of it is natural to either of them but I think given a chance Javert could be romantic but only for Valjean #like whatever their relationship is it is strictly only towards each other #I like Valvert and I also like asexual Valjean and aroace Javert so take your pick #I also think Eponine is on the aroace scale hear me out:#‘On My Own’ is more of a song about her need to be seen and held and known by someone and she envisions Marius being that person #she thinks if he loved her she’d be happier but in reality I don’t think she even really loved him just the idea of him #and I think romance would feel like being trapped to her #I also think she has sapphic feelings tendencies but also on aroace scale somewhere too #many ramblings but aroace Les Mis canons my beloved #aroace #aromantic #asexual #pride #les mis #les miserables #valvert #javert #Valjean #Eponine

I’ve got lots of big thoughts about Éponine, Cosette and 19th century womanhood because they really do fall on the opposite ends of the spectrum here. As a poor girl, Éponine is almost completely desexed, she is not seen as a lady but just another member the nameless impoverished. Marius doesn’t really see her as a woman, nor does she really see herself as a woman, at least not the way Cosette is. Therefore she is not afforded the protections of a young bourgeois lady.

Cosette is one the other end where all she is a woman. She is coddled and not allowed to make her own decisions, this critically comes to a head at the end of the novel when Marius and Valjean conspire to keep the secrets of Valjean’s past from her. Éponine on the other hand is forced to make decisions that she shouldn’t have to as a sixteen year old like “where am I going to sleep tonight?” and “how am I going to get food?” She has a level of freedom that Cosette will never get, much like the male gamins who are free to roam around Paris as they please, but it is a freedom born of desperate circumstances. She can make choices but all her options are bad ones.

#ouch #yes I love the way that les mis encompasses so many aspects of society and class and gender and sexuality #even if it wasn’t written explicitly you can extract so much from it #I love the difference between Eponine’s girlhood and Cosette’s girlhood and how one keeps going into her adulthood and the other loses it #when survival means you lose that girlhood and innocence and any connection to womanhood too because you don’t have the luxury #you’re trying to find food and shelter and it’s safer if you go unnoticed and femininity is a luxury you can’t afford #Eponine being jealous of Cosette in her fancy dresses and bows and ribbons and wondering who she’d be if she was allowed to wear that #and if she’d be seen as beautiful and worth something if she fitted that depiction of womanhood and girlhood #especially as she grew up wearing dresses and bows when Cosette was in rags and they literally switched after Cosette was taken away #they had less money and Eponine didn’t get any more dresses and she lived in rags and practical clothing and scraps from then on #whereas Cosette grew up in rags and was envious of Eponine in her dresses and then she got to wear them all the time as Valjean’s daughter #she was thrust into this girlhood and was allowed femininity for the first time and she loved it and she had dolls and dresses and ribbons #and as a girl in a convent and a daughter and a young woman she was expected to be pretty and demure and quiet and graceful and I wonder #if she ever felt trapped in the image Valjean saw her in and how he always viewed her as a little innocent girl and a child to be saved #she sings of ‘no longer being a child’ and yearning for the truth and Heart Full of Love shows that juxtaposition between Cosette the girl #in the castle and Eponine the street urchin in the shadows and how they started off opposite and traded lives #and neither had a say in it and yet class and society dictated where their lives would go and how they would be seen #and how they lived and died because of gender and class and society and status #and of course Marius went for the pretty girl in the pretty dress in the garden and not the wallflower he grew up alongside #I think Marius doesn’t even see Eponine as a woman at all he sees her as a poor peasant who is useful to him at times #and that must break Eponine’s heart #always emotional about the Eponine and Cosette parallels and how they both yearn to be free of something #and how Cosette ends the story in a wedding dress and Eponine’s story ends with her dying in the street dressed in boy’s clothing #need an AU where Cosette dresses in casual and grunge clothing and less gender conforming outfits and Eponine explores herself thru makeup #such a ramble but I think about it a lot #les mis #les miserables #Eponine #Cosette
