……would you like to share the yellow wallpaper novel concept living inside you?

It’s a verrrry loose concept that’s been pinned in the back of my brain box for the past decade or so (I used the Yellow Wallpaper as one of my exam focuses back in uni so I was deep into it and really felt a resonance). I don’t actually like to plan things out too much before I start writing because I tend to be very guided by my characters, so I’ve just got some vague vibes.

It’s a horror concept because that’s my main genre 🙂‍↕️ (outside of fic haha). It opens like your stereotypical haunted house narrative. Young couple moving into a new (to them) house. Fresh start. Blah blah yawn we’ve been here before a hundred times. The protagonist is a writer so she’s primarily working from home, and the room she’s chosen as her office has the wallpaper in it. Bold, patterned, intricate. Beautiful. The eye can never really catch in one spot, but gets caught following shapes and patterns. What great walls to stare at while she’s pondering where her story is heading.

Being the one in the room all the time, she’s the one who starts noticing the odd occurrences. It’s just movement at first. She thinks she’s tired, or it’s the pattern, but it really does seem like the wallpaper is moving. When she mentions it to her partner he brushes it off as her vivid imagination. Then she starts to hear things. Movement in the night. Scuttling. Scratching. They think they have mice. They find nothing.

It would escalate over the course of the novel the way it does in the story, but instead of the multiple metaphorical representations the wallpaper can be interpreted as in the actual story, I would make the figure a real entity. I think she was inspired by woman in the OG story. And by the end of the novel she wouldn’t be the actual source of horror to the protagonist anymore.

Also their interactions would get increasingly more homoerotic as more is revealed about the entity 🙂‍↕️
