A bit wild to me to see the notion that PHM is apolitical, even from the author himself, because... what? You mean the movie in which the world governments work together to try to solve a climate disaster, and scientists are believed, and it's explicitly said that the nations of the world won't work together to ration food? You mean the movie in which a woman is leading the main project to save the world and is scapegoated for it? You mean the movie in which the main character is seen as expendable partly because of the fact that he has no conventional partner or a traditional family? You mean the movie in which the main character loses all of his autonomy for the greater good and is forced to become a sacrifice? You mean the movie where the main character meets an alien and they share each other's scientific discoveries and advancements and culture? You mean that movie?

I think people forget that Stratt amnesticized Grace with the goal that Ilyukina and Yao would be there to help him, y’know NOT DIE, and then THEY DIED before he woke up.

So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so he’s got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.

And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.

Well... Yes and no.

The last time Ryland Grace was CONSCIOUS of any human touch was when he was knocked out. Absolutely true.

But the last human contact he would have had was Yao and Ilyukhina. Who were told that he was scared about panicking during launch and asked to be sedated. Who did all the pre flight checks before the Hail Mary launched. Who would have carefully, gently carried Grace to his bed in the dormitory, made sure he was secure, and initiated his coma procedure.

There would have been love there. Remember Ilyukhina throwing her hands high and saying "welcome to crew!" Remember Yao saying how he hoped Grace would say yes. Remember how much the crew trusted Grace, Stratt's First Officer, the guy who helped them so much, and was so kind to them, and was the one who they entrusted their preferred methods of suicide to. Who thought they were wonderful and brave.

They would have tucked him in. Maybe brushed his hair out of his face. Maybe said something kind to him before initiating their own coma procedures.

Ryland Grace doesn't remember, of course he wouldn't. But the last human touch he ever had was full of love.

I love seeing people dissecting how Eridians being ambush predators and humans being persistence hunters ends up affecting how Grace and Rocky interact and I think this goes for what they think is “cute” about the other.

Grace coos over Rocky “loafing” because to him that’s a sign of rest, trust, and vulnerability (even knowing full well that Eridians sleep on a pin cushion with everything spread out). Eridians probably take being low to the ground as a sign of aggression- like you’re trying to hide and get the better of them.

Rocky loves Grace’s bad dance moves because to Eridians, being splayed out and making yourself as big as possible is trust, rest, and vulnerability. He’s making himself well-seen. But if Rocky ever tries like- walking on two legs or shows his underside to Grace while walking Grace freaks out because on EARTH, making yourself big is the sign of aggression.

I thought I already had made a post talking about my Eridian oc but apparently I hadn’t so here they are:

Their name is David (he/they). He and Rocky were childhood friends and they are one of the biologists working on Graces quality of life.

Here is some sketch’s of him:

These are the “serious” sketches of them. I imagine he’d be just slightly bigger than Rocky. He’s has a deep gray colouring and dark blue details/texture differences (his body would be quite textured while the blue bits would be smooth). Sadly I don’t have the artistic capacity to accurately bring that vision to life.

His shape + main color is directly inspired by the first rock while their blue details are loosely inspired by the rocks circled in the second.

I of course also had to draw a low effort version of them.

David would have been giving his “human” name by Grace which made the whole naming process a bit harder cause instead of thinking “what do i want to name my oc?” I had to think “what would Ryland Grace name my oc?” Which is an infinitely harder question.

Anyway after some consideration I settled on david (even tho i was originally aiming for a more gender neutral name).

The reason for the name David is because of them being a biologist. They would be super interested in the animals on earth and Grace would be really interested in the animals on erid. This would lead to them swapping stories about animals on their respective home planet.

Those talks about animals kinda remained Grace of listening to nature documentarys voiced by David Attenborough while grading papers back on earth so when asked about giving them a name he quickly choses david.

I don’t fully have all his lore mapped out but I think I got the most important stuff.

David’s parents were performers and they wished for him to follow in their footsteps but the countless performances David seen throughout his time as a pebble had not invoked them with an deep appreciation for the arts instead it had invoked him with a deep curiosity for the nature and animals sometimes depicted in the performances

This lead to them ending up as a biologist. A rather new -by Eridian standards- and complicated field. The complications stems from a multitude of things that don’t make sense (t.ex the “birds”can somehow find plans even when it’s quiet, some plants use up more energy then they should, and some animals can lure other animals closer and the scientists don’t understand how.).

David believes and supports the controversial theory that there is something fundamental they’re missing. That they might be a sense that some of the other life on Erid have that they don’t have and that they can’t pick up with their tools. *cough* light *cough*.

Then Grace comes around, proving the theory right and opening the doors to so new many discovers.

(David have definitely showed a plant in Graces face once or twice asking if it’s glowing).
