The most pronounced and obvious of aboriginalist postures is the seeker of recovery who desires to heal and live in peace with the settlers. The reconciliator who prays a Christian god and strives before white judges is another. But both the victim and the litigant reflect essential colonial process of "civilizing" Indigenous people, making us into citizens of the conquering states, so that instead of fighting for our lands and resisting further colonization, we seek a resolution that is acceptable to and non-disruptive for the state and society we have come to embrace and identify with.

The traditional Lakota economy was roundly condemned by U.S. officials for its nomadic and communal character. Social relationships critical to task-oriented hunting-and-gathering practices were consistently subordinated to federal agency goals of formal education, farming, and wage work. In the early reservation years, the federal government used its control over off-reservation passes to discourage Lakota families from continuing the hunting base and associated social relationships of their economy. An elder Lakota man emphasized the physical violence used to enforce this policy: "People who just left to go hunting for deer without a pass were shot as being renegade" (interview, July 9, 1992)

Most indigenous populations who maintain any sense of a traditional worldview know that the way of life that a settler society has imposed on this land is unsustainable. Yet there’s been a sense that we really need to wait and till it collapses. Or wait until they’re done, or they’ve reached their limit and they can’t continue the way that they’ve been going on, and be patient. Fuck patience.
