‘ that doesn’t mean you aren’t a totally capable pilot and explorer.  you’ve already proven dozens of times over that you are.  but  you need time.  even the scars below the surface need a bit of time. ’

mason of all people knew that flying into the black with unresolved troubles could lead to trouble – especially on those long,  empty,  quiet voyages out into uninhabited space.  they come back to a person when there’s nothing left for them to occupy the time with.

‘ everyone just wants to make sure you’re safe.  that you aren’t pushing yourself too hard or expecting too much.  if you get out there too quick,  and you aren’t ready for it —-  everyone knows what kind of disasters can happen. ’

      ‘ maybe everyone should stop meddling in my life. i know what’s best for me. ’ he’s BABYING him, just like everyone else he’s been stuck with during his recovery. kovi has never been fond of how keen everyone has been in monitoring and controlling even the smallest details, but he’d never thought mason would agree with them.

      jaw sets, fingers resting on the curve of his knee. the irritation is clear on his face, brows knitting together as a sigh leaves him. ‘ i know that everyone wants to see me safe, but there comes a point where it’s overkill. this is interference in my personal life and my career. ’ a pause.

      ‘ mason, what scars i have will be raw for a very, very long time. being tortured and held by a race that is known to take no prisoners and leave no evidence is not something that i can forget and move past. and for as fucking disgusting as the situation was, i cannot allow that to prevent my life from progressing forward. ’

the way kovi’s face lights up is all the thanks mason needs – both for the visit and for the small gift.  it only ran him a couple of credits anyways,  but he’d figured kovi would be missing terran sweets.  nothing  quite  like them on aelum.

‘ boring,  sure,  but you need your rest,  ‘vi. ’  as much as mason misses the excitable alien’s company out in the void,  mason also knows kovi’s been through a lot lately.  he needs time to rest and recover – lest the  space madness  become all the more likely as he takes to the stars with unresolved issues.

‘ rather you be bored here than overwhelmed out there.  gotta be in top shape to take that kind of challenge on. ’

mouth sets itself in a line, eyes falling upon mason as he processes. of course, he too would be pushing for kovi’s recovery break. aeluma above, he sounded like kivvix when he’d first been pulled from the tank.

‘ i’m fine, ’ he says softly, sadly even. ‘ mason, i’ve rested enough. my physical injuries have been healed, and i can do everything just fine. there is nothing i cannot do, and i’ve proved that. i have had my time to rest. and i know-- - i know i have some scars and i know that my vision’s..  but i can still fly. i can still pilot just as well. ’

the kreioth sighs, turns his gaze from the human and instead towards the window. ‘ i’m just.. sick of everyone telling me I CAN’T when i know that I CAN. ’

his space suit isn’t even off yet – the helmet removed,  sure.  aelum has enough breathable atmosphere for humans to walk around without oxygen.  but otherwise mason looks like he just landed and stepped off the  son of orion  – which,  really,  he has.

the pilot tosses a crinkly plastic bag at kovi.  a terran sugary snack.  gummy bears,  more of a tourist gimmick or vintage novelty snack these days than anything,  but he knew kovi had taken a liking to the sweet.

‘ how’s recovery? ’

      head turns, book being set aside as a large grin finds its way upon kovi’s face at the presence of his friend. it had been far too boring on aelum without mason’s presence, and between his injuries and elder kivvix grounding him for recovery, he was losing his mind. the kreioth sits up as a gift his tossed his way, all working eyes falling upon it. ‘ mason! you came to see me. ’

      it takes a moment but his face lights up, not even waiting before he starts to tear into the bag of sweets. thin fingers pluck a small bear from the package before he pops it into his mouth, humming rather happily. ‘ it’s... rather boring, if i’m honest. i want to get back out into space. kivvix won’t allow it. he’s had a xeioh stationed here ever since you and your friend brought me back home. ’ a pause. ‘ not to mention that he’s put effort into repairing my gear and replacing my ship. which, unfortunately, means i’m MAROONED until further notice. ’

      the kreioth, despite many different beliefs and stories across the galaxy, DO IN FACT have a military. however, their desire to use it for personal gain or conquest is little to none, preferring instead to use careful negotiation and skill to achieve what they desire.

      in the case of just who IS trained to take up arms should war ever be declared on aelum ( which is, for most intents and purposes, slim to none ), it falls to those that have been deemed EXPLORERS & THE XEIOH. while the latter is geared more towards actual combat, the explorers are the fleet captains that are highly skilled in aerial combat.

      kovi himself holds the rank of captain, and is aelum’s best pilot to date. had it not been for his curious nature, brilliance in studies of flora & fauna, and his natural affinity for flying, he would have become one of the XEIOH. these warriors are hardened, skilled in combat, and highly respected among the kreioth. most are held in high regard, while others are hand selected to be guardians of the council of elders--- - the highest honor that can be gifted among the xeioh.

      if war were declared, any active member of these two social classes would be recalled and fitted for battle.

      ‘ mason, take a look at these samples! ’ excitement lights up the kerioth’s face, gaze rapidly darting towards where his companion lingers nearby. it’s been far too long since he’d gotten to stretch his legs and collect new samples. thin fingers extend outward, plucking one of the flowers in question.

      it’s small, thin, pastel purple petals almost rolling as they extend outwards from the center point. in it there are small beads of pollen gathered, the blue of the heart of it vibrant against the dark of kovi’s suit. 

      ‘ it’s the first one that i’ve seen like it. isn’t it BEAUTIFUL, mason? it must be one of the native strands of flora. i’ll have to see if i can gather a few more and take some seeds back with us. ’

      typically, words do not cause any injury to kovi’s pride. but something about this quip, this one small dig, seemed to upset the kreioth. he HISSES, slamming a pda down against the counter before whirling to face mason. ‘ make no mistake, MASON CALDWELL, and listen well. i do not have the LUXURY of admitting any of the things i feel for the person i feel them towards. our paths do not cross. our fates are not joined. what would a COUNCIL GUARD ever feel towards some low ranking explorer sent on a FOOL’S ERRAND to study a race that will undoubtedly tear itself apart with it’s own stubborn ignorance? ’

                                             it is the first time that kovi ikho has felt pure ANGER.

      he closes the distance between them, hovering over mason with his full height instead of leaning down to meet him. ‘ do not think for one second that i am not privy to how LOVE effects me. but know that i have no control over what fate aeluma has planned for me, and that woman is not a part of it. i expect to hear nothing more on this subject. ’

      if one were to look closely, they could spot ALL FOUR EYES rolling at once. kovi has learned that kara is, at the very least, DRAMATIC. maybe even over-the-top, at best. the smaller human laughs and settles her hands at her waist, head canted off to one side, staring at him. ‘ oh, and what a cross that must be to bear MISS THRACE! what a terrible, terrible BURDEN it must be to be that good looking and that athletic. truly, it’s a pity that you’re cursed in such a way. ’

      kovi lifts an arm, faking a soft cry of disbelief as he tosses his head to the side. silence hangs between he and kara before he steals a glance at her– - and proceeds to lose his shit. ‘ kara thrace, you are truly something to experience. of the humans i’ve met, you’ve certainly got the best HUMOR.

SHE’S A KID AGAIN AND HUNKERED IN THE HALLWAY outside ofher mother’s bedroom. she makes no noise (this is life or death, this is war ) and peers through the crack of thedoor, watching socrata move around, move to the closet to find something towear. this is a dream, kara realizes, the same dream that she’s had over andover and over on days where it gets real bad, and what makes it all so much worseis that even though she knows what’s going to happen next, she stays rightwhere she is.

all to see the expression of horrorTWIST OVER HER MOTHER’S FACE as sheopens the closet and then gets showered with a rain of plastic bugs from thedrugstore down the street. a relatively harmless prank, when taken intocontext. but then you add the context, and you remember that socrata thrace hasa deathly fear of insects, and a penchant for wreaking havoc, and a habit ofbeating her child half to death. this is payback for the way she split kara’shead open for not making her bed properly, and as she rages into the hallwayand grabs kara by the arm, her daughter is smiling.

it was worth it.

here is what should come next:socrata should drag her by the arm, spitting, screaming ( stop, stop, you’rehurting me mama, you’re hurting me! ), to the door. then she’ll take first herleft hand, and then her right, and fit them against the doorjamb, AND SLAM IT SHUT WITH TEN SICKENING CRACKS.

BUT HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD: socrata grabs for her but suddenlyshe’s not there, suddenly she’s six feet up in the air and spinning. something’sgrabbed her, someone’s grabbed her, and as she turns against an iron grip shesees four gentle eyes peering down at her. there’s a familiar rumble from afamiliar throat, and all kara can do is hold on as kovi turns away from hermother, away from the screaming, and says gentle, says soft, “i’ve got you,kara.”

and with that he holds her closeand walks away, as she tucks her head into the crook of his neck, and closesher eyes.
