2 months now and still Shadow Milk had made no progress in obtaining his soul jam. He was completely torn between his own selfish power and the possibility of building a family. It wasn't like he saw himself as a good father anyway. However he was much more focused on Pure Vanillas increasingly concerning behavior.
It seemed as the days went by Pure Vanilla was almost deteriorating mentally and physically. It was strange to say yet it was the truth Pure Vanilla wasn't doing too great.
He was sluggish and lazy, hardly putting up a resistance to rest anymore, his emotional state tanked, he acted out, he'd cry more often, and all in all he was just a mess. It was starting to worry those around him; Shadow Milk especially.
It was odd. Shadow Milk knew mood swings were normal for a pregnant cookie and yet something about it felt off.
The first month at the very least Pure Vanilla was active and acting normal. He'd put up a resistance towards relaxing and went on with his normal routine, but now? Now he was acting like he was when he was Truthless Recluse, all cooped up in his chambers and building up and laying in his proclaimed ‘nest’.
It was really worrying Shadow Milk and the others around the kingdom. Black Raisin pulled him aside once and very sternly told him:
“Make sure he eats.”
Shadow Milk did listen. He was the one mostly bringing food to Pure Vanilla. Pure Vanilla seemed more receptive to food as his selected ‘mate’ brought it to him. Otherwise he didn't fully emerge from his room.
It was worrying. Very very worrying.
He encountered Black Raisin one day after Pure Vanilla wasn't speaking once more. He knew she knew Pure Vanilla much better than him.
“So… You know about Pure Vanilla right?”
His sudden appearance made her jump and cry out as she was startled. Black Raisin was currently working on scouting and setting up traps.
She glared at him.
“What about him?”
Shadow Milk floated back and shrugged once again hiding his feelings behind an act.
“Oh… I dunno, maybe you haven't noticed how much of a shut in he's been lately! Honestly he's much worse than he was at my spire! Oops… I mean-”
“What?”
“Nothing! Nothing! Haha… Anyway, I thought you'd know something about this… Behavior. He won't talk to me!”
Black Raisin looked at him suspiciously. Shadow Milk sure did talk a lot (especially when hiding his feelings). She sighed and shook her head.
“I… Have my suspicions but…” She looked away almost like she was hesitating to actually tell him her suspicions. “Well… He told me that once before the war he…”
She paused for a moment and looked away. She took a deep breath in.
“I think it would be best if he told you himself."
“Wha-”
“Go!!”
Black Raisin was making it clear she did not want Shadow Milk to be there. Shadow Milk only scoffed and floated away.
“Fine then.”
He rolled his eyes and teleported off back to the castle. He gave himself time to ponder about what could've happened to Pure Vanilla before the Dark Flour War that could be making him such a depressive shut in.
Loss maybe? Or something more drastic? He was unsure as he floated through the halls towards Pure Vanilla’s chambers.
The space was neat and clean which came as a bit of a surprise to him as just days before his room was a mess as he tried to build his ‘nest’.
Pure Vanilla was curled up on the bed reading a book and cradling his stomach protectively. He seemed to be in a good mood for now.
He looked up at Shadow Milk and smiled. He looked very tired.
“Have you gotten any rest at all, Pure Vanilla?” Shadow Milk crossed his arms.
Pure Vanilla seemed to sense the confrontational attitude and looked slightly anxious. He set the book down and sighed.
“No… Not really.” He admitted making Shadow Milk sigh. Shadow Milk floated over towards the bed and sat down at the edge.
“You know you should be.”
Pure Vanilla sighed and looked guilty. He knew he should be taking care of himself better but he…
“What's really going on?” Shadow Milk asked critically and narrowed his eyes.
“It's… Nothing really. I promise you I'm fine.” He offered a soft smile for reassurance. Shadow Milk knew he was hiding something.
“Well…" Shadow Milk leaned in closer. “I spoke with Black Raisin Cookie earlier,” He watched as Pure Vanilla's face fell and was replaced by a look of panic. “She told me that you knew this situation better than she did.”
He raised an eyebrow.
Pure Vanilla's face dawned with a tragic realization, his eyes filling up with tears immediately.
“I…”
It was like a switch had flipped. Pure Vanilla started to bawl hysterically, tears immediately falling down his cheeks as his sobs started to fill the room.
Shadow Milk was stunned by this sudden reaction. He tried jumping back but Pure Vanilla grabbed onto him and wailed into his chest. Whatever it was that had happened to him it must've affected him greatly.
It took a while for Pure Vanilla to calm down enough to actually explain why he was crying and what had affected him this much.
“I-I’m sorry… I just…” He took a few breaths to calm himself. “I can explain everything.”

A long time ago, way before the war, or maybe it wasn't that long ago… My kingdom and the Dark Cacao Kingdom had an allyship. For a while the relationship was strictly political but… Things change of course.
Dark Cacao has been my friend for so long… It was hard not to fall for him.
He chuckles softly, nuzzling into Shadow Milk further.
I courted him… the marriage was seen as a political achievement.
His voice trembled slightly but he steadied himself.
I got pregnant after a while, triplets. It was odd for my species to bear three eggs, we usually lay only two! It was a miracle, three potential heirs to the thrones.
It was difficult being pregnant for the first time but I was in good hands with Dark Cacao. When the eggs finally arrived he insisted they stay in my kingdom. His kingdom was cold and harsh, truthfully it was a good idea.
For a while… It went well for the first few months. I kept the eggs safe and made sure they were warm in my nest.
They grew so fast! It only felt like an instant before they hatched.
Three healthy little girls.
Tears welled up in his eyes despite the soft smile on his face. He wiped them away quickly.
I thought they were healthy. I thought we were going to be happy. Dark Cacao and I were so proud of our little girls.
Everything was going so well… For so long. It felt so… Abrupt!
One night, one of the triplets started crying, like she was in pain. I went to her crib and saw the rash on her and the temperature she was running. I did everything I could to keep the fever down.
It felt even more futile when my other daughters got sick as well… rashes and fevers. It kept getting worse… They wouldn't stop crying. They were in pain and I knew it!
I-I did everything in my power… Medics and healing spells but it was like they were resistant! Nothing worked and not even I could figure out what was wrong with them.
He started to cry again and then he started to ramble. He buries his face in his hands.
I-It was just… They kept getting… Sicker and sicker and I… I… I was powerless to st… Stop it! And…. And they just… Kept wailing! Screaming and crying! I knew they were in s-so much pain but I… I… oh!!
Shadow Milk shook Pure Vanilla's shoulders to at least try and keep him grounded. He went silent and just cried for a minute. Shadow Milk let him.
And then… One day… It stopped. All of my girls just stopped crying. I wished that a miracle happened, that they somehow got better, but they didn't. They never cried again.
I didn't know what to do anymore. I spiraled. Nothing was even going right anymore. I wrote to Dark Cacao informing him of our daughters deaths.
By the time he came I was deep in my depression. It was like denial had set in. I refused to believe they were dead. He found me in my chambers crying my eyes out. I remember reaching out for him.
He embraced me. He held me close. I… Don't remember what he said to me… I remember him stroking my hair and saying something like, “It'll be okay. We still have each other."
Pure Vanilla shook his head.
No… That wasn't what he said. But he held me… Like this.
He took Shadow Milk's arms and wrapped them around himself. One arm rested against his wing, the other on top of his head.
Just like this…
It was so hard to even have the thought of a funeral for them… But I could swear that night after the funeral there were three small stars shining brighter than the others..
✦✧✦
Pure Vanilla sniffles one final time. He curls up on himself against Shadow Milk who'd been uncharacteristically silent the whole time.
Despite the stone face Shadow Milk had, the eyes in his hair said everything. They were blurry and teared up.
Pure Vanilla tilted his head and looked away.
“I'm sorry… You didn't need to hear all of that..”
“No.” Shadow Milk shut down the self deprecation immediately. He grabbed Pure Vanilla's chin and tilted it up. "Stop saying that stuff. You didn't deserve that… No cookie does.”
Pure Vanilla's eyes widened. Shadow Milk didn't sound much like himself… Maybe he was finally rubbing off on the beast.
“I-I just… Needed to get that out..”
“Feel better?”
“Yes…”
He cuddled up against the jester's chest. Everything had taken a toll out of him. He closed his eyes as Shadow Milk started to stroke his wings.
After Pure Vanilla had finally fallen asleep one thing still lingered in Shadow Milk's mind. He knew grief can do things to cookies; he didn't fully believe the bit about the stars.
He laid Pure Vanilla down on the bed and floated out to the balcony.
It was starting to get dark out anyway most stars weren't evident fully. He looked up and scanned the sky, looking for the three small stars Pure Vanilla supposedly saw. To his surprise, he saw them. Even in the dim light the triplets shined brighter than the rest.
The jester smiled to himself. A sad pitying smile as he watched the stars twinkle in the sky. Pure Vanilla didn't deserve such heartbreak… He couldn't believe he was thinking that.
Shadow Milk decided to put a hold in his quest for the soul jam. For now at least…
He was thinking about teleporting to his other realm to speak with his dearest minions, but his little dove felt more important at the moment. He went back inside. Pure Vanilla was trembling. He climbed in bed and cuddled against Pure Vanilla. The trembling and distress died down.
… He was never going to get that soul jam was he?

was activity taking damage writing this i hate making PV suffer 💔💔
Being Pure Vanilla Cookie's partner also meant having to tend to his high drive which in fact had only gotten worse since the pregnancy. It was normal but very irritating for Shadow Milk at least, he already had to deal with Pure Vanilla Cookie's over the top affection and insane empathy that was already enough for him.
Pure Vanilla Cookie's instincts had been insane lately, at times Shadow Milk wondered if he really was a cookie or just a giant bird in disguise. He'd attempt to pull Shadow Milk in a ‘nest’ he'd made for the eggs. It was really just a pile of clothes Pure Vanilla had made on the bed.
It was like that blonde was trying to teach him how to incubate without using words. Really as the days passed and the closer the due date approached.
“It's just three months… I can deal with this. I think.” Shadow Milk reassured himself as Pure Vanilla cuddled over top of him fast asleep. He sighed.
“I don't think I can deal with this.”
Shadow Milk was trying his hardest he really was! Though it was really hard to be patient when your partner was a giant bird and kept stealing clothes to build a ‘nest’. Come to think of it, Pure Vanilla never acted like this once during their time together in the spire.
He wrapped his arms around Pure Vanilla as wandered his hand down to the blonde's stomach. His stomach was very warm and if Shadow Milk pressed down he could feel the outline of the eggs. He smiled softly knowing those eggs were his kids. Their children.
Pure Vanilla made a soft sound as he was pushed off of Shadow Milk. It was way too hot for Shadow Milk. Like a magnet Pure Vanilla was once again back at his side, cooing softly pressing his bump against Shadow Milk's side.
So much for personal space…
He rolled his eyes and just accepted it eventually. There wasn't much he could do when a hybrid had accepted him as his mate and was carrying his children.
He… Accepted this even though truthfully his whole point of coming here was to get his soul jam back.
Slowly he shuffled away from Pure Vanilla's hold and got up. Pure Vanilla didn't sleep with all of those fancy access clothing on. Shadow Milk approached the brooch holding the soul jam- his soul jam.
Just as he reached for it he froze hearing Pure Vanilla groan. He was waking up. He quickly retracted his hand and attempted to look normal.
“Mmmm… Shadow Milk?”
“Yes?”
“What are you doing? Come back and lay with me.”
The blind fool was clueless.. For now and hopefully forever.
Shadow Milk was divided. He wanted his soul jam back but the man he was supposed to be treating like a thief was carrying his children.
He was charmed by those submissive milky eyes and went to join him back in bed. The soul jam could wait.
There were many truths to why Shadow Milk had returned to his other half on that night. The crushing loneliness, the soul jam, and the fact that he could sense Pure Vanilla struggling and wanted to see him suffer.
An arm and then a large wing was wrapped around the beast immediately as he laid back down making him huff. It was maddening how lovey dovey Pure Vanilla was. He'd just have to endure in the meantime until the eggs were pushed out…
As he laid his two eyes remained on Pure Vanilla as he slept against him peacefully while the many eyes on his hair were locked on the brooch. He was torn between two worlds.
“The soul jam… Can wait.” He growled holding onto Pure Vanilla tighter.
—
Pure Vanilla had a problem. A pretty big one at that. He'd truly forgotten about how high his sex drive went during pregnancy. That detail was overshadowed by his experience with his last batch. He couldn't sit fully still in meetings anymore.
He'd rub his thighs together wanting relief. He had gotten too big to reach over and touch himself. He huffed with irritation. He thought the craving for sex would have ended after his heat was over and now he was carrying but he was very wrong.
Shadow Milk was his solution for once.
Currently, Shadow Milk was chatting with a servant totally not intimidating them to do his bidding. Pure Vanilla wasted no time as soon as he could see the blurry outline of Shadow Milk.
He grabbed onto the back of the jester's ruffled collar and pulled him back, dragging him into his room. Shadow Milk made a surprised noise as he was suddenly grabbed and dragged back.
Pure Vanilla laid against Shadow Milk breathing heavily and nuzzling into his neck. Shadow Milk froze looking at the healer, concerned.
“Pure Vanilla? Are you alright?... It's not happening is it?”
Pure Vanilla shook his head. Shadow Milk tilted his.
“I… I need you.”
Shadow Milk mistakes Pure Vanilla as being clingy once more and just sighed. He guided Pure Vanilla over to the bed and laid down with him. That wasn't just what he wanted however.
He cooed, irritated with Shadow Milk's lack of action. He got on top of Shadow Milk instantly, his hole already dripping wet and Shadow Milk seemed to notice that as he was being straddled.
Pure Vanilla still didn't wear anything underneath his robes.
He whimpered needily at Shadow Milk attempting to grind while fidgeting. Shadow Milk sighed and carefully flipped positions, laying Pure Vanilla down on his back and hovering over him.
“I don't want you ruining my suit.” Shadow Milk rolled his eyes.
Pure Vanilla shrugged and spread his legs, lifting his robes up slightly and presenting himself. They both made no further moves. Really they both were unsure if penetration was the right way to go, both of them feared damaging the eggs.
Shadow Milk moved first, lowering his head down towards Pure Vanilla's waiting entrance. He gave an experimental lick making Pure Vanilla shudder. That tiny movement gave Shadow Milk the right away to keep going.
He modified his tongue slightly making it longer as he dragged it over the wet cunt. Pure Vanilla groaned loudly above him as he dragged his tongue over his aching clit.
Finally his tongue entered carefully and he started licking his inner walls. He was then pinned down by Pure Vanilla's large thighs clamping over his head. He made a soft noise but kept on.
Pure Vanilla arched slightly and moaned loudly as he felt Shadow Milk's tongue exploring his inner walls. Shadow Milk couldn't breathe too well.
Pure Vanilla was gripping tightly onto the sheets and moaning, occasionally biting his lip to breathe. Shadow Milk was holding onto his thighs tapping them to try and get some air. It wasn't until Pure Vanilla climaxed was when he was able to get some air.
They laid next to each other after cleaning Shadow Milk's face off and letting him breathe. Pure Vanilla was being cuddly again.
“... Shadow Milk?”
“Yes?”
“Could you go to the kitchen and get me some water… And a cheesecake? Please?”
Shadow Milk sighed but he did as requested.
Only three months at least… Nearing two. He could wait until then… Hopefully.

plot is going to start here.... also im still working on chapter 7 so it might come later. ignore the inconsistency in my chapters please
He wasn't stuck in the way he disliked, unable to escape or anything, he could escape at any time yet he didn't.
He was stuck underneath the very cookie he never even expected to form a relationship with. Pure Vanilla. Honestly he never even expected to form an actually positive relationship with his other half, especially after his betrayal. He wasn't even expecting to be having children with him.
Truly he didn't know what to do at the current moment. Being dragged into bed and being forced to cuddle with his new found partner wasn't exactly something he was used to.
It was raining and dark outside but not a storm, just strong showers and Pure Vanilla, overly affectionate than he already was, insisted on cuddling.
“Come on! Come with me! It's perfect weather for a snuggle! You and I both need some rest.” He'd SOMEHOW managed to convince Shadow Milk to lay down. Being laid on top of wasn't exactly something he was used to. At first he struggled against Pure Vanilla Cookie's weight, he chuckled at Shadow Milk Cookie's struggle, soft coo’s mixing in with his chuckles. It felt mocking to the jester.
He just went limp after realizing his struggle was pointless letting Pure Vanilla pin him down and snuggle up against him. Unfortunately for Shadow Milk his fragile dough and Pure Vanilla Cookie's heavier body wasn't a good mix… It didn't take him long before he was squirming again.
Lucky for him Pure Vanilla had some built in instincts from being a healer and could tell when someone was uncomfortable or hurting.
“Would you like to switch places?”
He asked softly, a bit drowsy after dozing off in their comfortable silence. At least Pure Vanilla thought it was comfortable.
He didn't really wait for a response before sliding off of Shadow Milk and laying against his side attempting to spoon. A wing wrapped around Shadow Milk and Pure Vanilla used his magic to heal his aches making him sigh softly. He awkwardly turned on his side to return his embrace.
Pure Vanilla cooed happily as they both laid together in a comfortable embrace.
A silence fell over the room, a comfortable, cozy silence as they cuddled each other. Just as they both were about to fall asleep a question crossed Pure Vanilla Cookie's mind.
“Shadow Milk?”
“Hmmm?”
Pure Vanilla paused for a moment wondering if he should ask it or not. It wasn't like it was that big of a deal anyway.
“Why… Why did you come to me that night?”
Shadow Milk didn't respond. He didn't want to respond and admit weakness so he did what he always does. He lied.
“I dunno… Bored maybe? Don't really remember.”
Shadow Milk smiled yet Pure Vanilla saw right through his lie but he didn't push.
He knew Shadow Milk well and he knew he was only trying to protect himself. The truth was Shadow Milk couldn't take the crushing loneliness any longer and he felt like he was going to snap his henchmen’s heads off if he had to deal with them in the other realm any longer.
They fell back into a comfortable silence resting against each other while Pure Vanilla Cookie's wing blanketed over top of Shadow Milk. They fell asleep while Shadow Milk subconsciously rubbed gentle circles into Pure Vanilla Cookie's back.
The rain beating on the window created a perfect ambiance for the two as they drifted off.
Shadow Milk didn't know how lucky he was.
