I love the idea that Clark Kent is genuinely unnerving and a little frightening when he stops being The Most Friendly Guy On Earth.

Those who know him well generally miss it. He is cemented in their mind as sweet, anxious country boy Clark who needs someone to tell the fast food cashier he asked for no pickles. Why would anyone ever be intimidated by him? Because he’s tall? Please, grow up.

But they miss the shift in the air when someone starts something. They miss how he suddenly regains the two inches he slouches away, how his clumsiness becomes fluidity, how he starts to move not-quite-right and the troublemaker suddenly can’t escape his unshakeable gaze.

It’s worse the better trained and more observant the person observing this is. Because every sixth sense they have ever built up is telling them that this man is dangerous, that he’s wrong, but they cannot pinpoint why. Maybe it is in how he moves, the smooth predator’s grace of a big cat on a human frame. Maybe it is in his expression, the confidence born not of bluster or ego. Maybe it is in his voice, the lack of intimidation or anger, instead a calm tinged with a little bit of exasperation, as if you in all of our power are simply an annoyance to him.

A number of true-human or lower-end meta villains have suddenly backed down from mid-tier reporter Clark Kent because while they don’t know why, they do know that something is very, very wrong with that man.
