#100 days of productivity [28/100] -17/03/2017- Have a lot of books and have a lot of ambitions to do a lot of work!
our studio tour :)
27.09.16 // the reality of my workspace when I’m using it: a mess
[3/100] My phone is damaged so it’s hard to take good pictures so bare with me. Some algorithm notes I made a couple of days back. I drew a lot today which was good as i needed a break from school related things. However, I’ll jump right back into work again from tomorrow and get into the study mood once more.
How to Find Yourself
1. Follow lots of interests and try lots of activities. That will reveal your genuine passions, and highlight the things that you really enjoy.
2. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to others and to reinforce healthy boundaries. If you don’t, you will find you get pushed around, can’t think for yourself, or can’t simply “be me.”
3. Enjoy being alone and embrace solitude. That will stop the distractions and quieten the noise.
4. Travel, go on adventures, and see something new. That will change your perspective and give you fresh dreams.
5. Be with people who’re different, who challenge your views, extend your horizons and change how you think.
6. Think of those who inspire you, and cause you to dream. What is it about them that ignites that spark?
7. Don’t quieten the longings that rise from your heart. They reveal your soul – and the person you are.
And so, I only had a week of classes as a newly baked uni student, and even those weren’t proper classes but rather introductions and repeated lab safety instruction. Yet somehow, I already (with every other bioscience student in my uni) managed to get an essay to write (due in less than 3 weeks)... HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? I will not learn how to swim just because you threw me into deep water.!!!.
jk, I’m completely fine with having to write this, however, if anyone has any recommendations on what books/articles etc I could use for referencing, I would be forever grateful. btw, I have to examine the processes that lead to evolution of new species. THANK YOU IN ADVANCEEE <3 <3 <3

advice for freshman
Things to say to yourself to keep you going
You know WHAT, I am going to do this thing right about NOW [accompany this with slamming your palms on a desk for extra emphasis and determination]
In the grand scheme of the universe, such a superficial detail as this one is not significant enough to dissuade me from the path I have established for my own future [the fancier words you use the better]
This situation calls for urgent action, we will need to construct a highly exhaustive plan to keep the enemy at bay (a plan involving these English essays and this physics laboratory report) [put your elbows on the desk and the tips of your fingers together you know the pose]
In this fast-paced capitalist society where time is money, I, an aspiring successful businessperson, do not have the time OR the money for lounging about [pretend you’re wearing a suit. wear an actual suit if you can]

Active Study Tasks
Hi everyone! One of the hardest things to do is active studying before exams! While many of us study hard, we may not be considering that we are not studying actively! Passive studying is things such as only reading previously highlighted material and continuously reciting the same information over and over. To actively study, first break your study time down into two different categories: Preparation and Review!
The key to Preparation is ICOW! Identify, Condense, Organize, and Write. These strategies will help you do it:
Develop study sheets
Develop concept maps and charts
Create flash cards for vocab, questions, formulas and problems
Make self-tests
Remark (rehighlight or review previously highlighted material and finding what is the most important information)
Find practice problems
Outline
Rewrite any notes
Summarize text or lecture notes into main ideas
List the steps needed for a problem or concept
Plan essay answers
Answer questions at the end of the chapter.
Prepare material for a study group
Create a 5-Day study plan
Next you want to actually Review the information you gathered through your prep. The key to review is RE-USE: Rehearse, Extend, Understand, Self-Test, and Evaluate. Here are some strategies:
Recite outloud information from your study sheets
Replicate concept maps with little to no help
Recite any flashcards you made. Separate out any difficult cards so that you can continue to review them.
Practice writing formulas
Complete practice problems, circle steps you did wrong and try again in a different pen color (to help you identify the differences)
Take the self-tests you made before.
Attempt reverse testing. Make questions out of the answers from before and work them backwards.
Take notes on remarked tests and notes
Explain material to group members
Write essay answers from memory
Go through lecture slides or textbook and recite all the information you know based off of the heading.
Evaluate how much you know and how much you have to review again. Take longer in reviewing missed material and simply review information you learned quickly for the end of your study session.
Note: Many of these tasks are from the book Taking Charge of Your Learning by Dianna Blerkom
Hey guys! In this masterpost I’ll be going through the note-taking methods I use in different situations. I’m really bad at writing these introduction things so let’s just start (also, I didn’t have time to proof-read this so sorry if there’re any mistakes): Taking Notes During Class I’ve noticed that when teachers write on the whiteboard, they don’t necessarily write neatly or in order. This is why I would suggest initially using loose-leaf paper to take notes in class instead of writing in a book. This way, you can write however messily you want without having to worry about the neatness/order that things are in. After class is finished, I usually rewrite these notes into a book with extra information from my textbooks. I get that not everyone has time to do this but it’s worked out really well for me in the past.
Summarising Textbook Information and Other Notes My all time favourite note-taking method is using Microsoft OneNote. Taking notes digitally doesn’t work for everyone but I personally love this method. For some reason, I find it extremely off-putting to read hand-written notes (i have no idea why but it’s pretty weird) and OneNote lets me organise everything the way I want to. This is what most of my notes look like:
My biology notes are a lot more detailed and contain more diagrams than my physics notes which mostly consist of equations. I usually put detailed information on the left and summaries, keywords, definitions and diagrams on the right.
For Revising Making little summaries on flashcards is a super effective way to memorise things (especially for studying languages). They are easily portable and you can make online ones on websites such as Quizlet. I usually have questions on one side of the flashcard (e.g. What is the function of the nucleus in an atom?) and the answers on the other.
Diagrams For visual learners, I would highly recommend condensing textual information into diagrams. This works the best with subjects such as Biology where there are a lot of processes and structures to learn. For example, if you are learning about cells, then you can draw one instead of writing down every little detail into a super long paragraph that you’ll probably never look at again. If you are learning about a process such as the circulatory system, you can draw a diagram with arrows indicating the flow of blood around the body. In the past I’ve condensed up to 2 pages of information into a single diagram that was simple and easy to understand.
Organising Notes Basically, I have binders folders for the subjects that are heavy in paper and worksheets. The binders contain plastic pockets and loose leaf paper. I usually put any loose worksheets in the plastic pockets and file the heavier booklet type ones after hole-punching them. I carry these folders with me when I go to class or take only the specific sheet I will need for the day. I use little plastic tabs to divide my notes into different topics which makes it easier to go through them. For the subjects without much paper, I have a single folder that I file everything into. I usually leave this folder at home because I don’t need any of the things inside it for class.
Note: No matter what method you use to write your notes, make sure that it’s an effective one. There’s no point in copying out slabs of information from your textbook if you’re not retaining any of it. Use the time before exams start to test out different note-taking methods because having a good one can save you lots of time and effort.
Another Note: I just want to say that this is how I take notes and because I’m a different person to you, I have different needs and capabilities. If this doesn’t help you in anyway or you disagree with something that has been said in this masterpost then I’m sorry but there’s not much I can do about it. Ru :)
