A fanzine dedicated to the romantic pairing of Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain from DC Comics. Currently in the interest check phase!

Applications for Last Of Our Kind: A StephCass Zine are officially OPEN until May 24th!

We have been absolutely thrilled at the response to our interest check, and we are now moving forward with opening applications! You are welcome to submit applications to as many positions as you'd like, however, you will be accepted for a maximum of one.

A basic rundown of who we're looking for:

Cover artists, page artists, and comic arts, please head over to our page/comic artist form.

Fanfiction writers, please head over to our writer form.

Merch artists, please head to the (you guessed it!) merch artist form.

We're also looking to add four moderators to our team; a page and comic art moderator, a merchandise moderator, a writing moderator, and a graphics/social media moderator. More detail descriptions of each moderators' responsibilities are listed within the form.

Want to contribute something that doesn't fit into those categories? Cosplay? Poetry? Essays and comic analysis? Collages? Crafting instructions? Head on over to our non-traditional contribution form! While our other forms follow the same format (with a few tweaks for each art form, of course), this one is very open-ended! We want to make sure every creative has the chance to apply, and this form gives anyone who wants it the chance to share what they'd like to contribute, how they'd do it, and their previous work/experience with that art form!

Contributors will receive decision emails between June 1st and 7th, however, moderator applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. The form will close when all roles have been filled, and applicants will hear back no later than June 1st.

hello, moderator apps anon again, wanted to clarify the responsibilities of the social media/graphics mod role, does that mean that person will be creating all the graphics in addition to handling the social media accounts' post schedule? or just the graphics for someone else to post? thank you!

The social media/graphic mod will be in charge of creating the graphics for the zine’s socials, along with assisting the host in planning a posting schedule for the social media pages. (This will just look like brainstorming vague ideas for posts (like contributor spotlights, mod introductions, production updates, etc) and deciding on loose deadlines for each post (nothing will be a hard deadline except for updates on when sales open and close)).

Yes! Currently, the only moderator position that is 100% filled is the writing mod position.

What would the requirements for web weaves look like for this? Especially if physical copies do become a thing

While fanzines are already a pretty... grey area, legally speaking, we want to make sure we aren't taking anything away from small creators. As web weaves commonly include photography and poetry, we will ask, if selected for the zine, that creators only include their original photography and poetry, works in public domain, and works where the original creator has given explicit consent for their work to be used elsewhere (for this last one, we'll give the creators of the original elements credit in the zine as well, alongside the printed web weave).

Of course, we cannot answer every specific thing here. But, if brought onto the team, the creator will be able to talk to the moderation team in detail about their contribution, and we will make sure everything works for the zine!

Hi i just wanted to clarify, but is the word count requirement for fics 1k? Cuz I noticed for a previous ask there was a range of 1-4k words

Yes! However, we are flexible when it comes to samples. If one of your samples is around 900 words, no need to worry about it. We just want to see your best work :)

Hello! Just curious how many people for each role/application type are you guys planning to accept?

Hello! Thank you so much for your ask.

We are planning on accepting around 10-13 writers, 13-17 zine artists, (comic artists, illustrators, and cover artist) and 3-6 merch artists.

However, please take these numbers with a grain of salt! We also have non-traditional contributor applications open, and have no real way of estimating how many non-writer and non-artist applications we will receive, which will obviously affect the number of traditional contributor slots we have.

We will only be taking on one moderator for each category (writing, page art, merchandise, graphics/social media), and these moderators will be given the option to create a piece for the zine as well as moderating, which will also affect the numbers.

Hi, sorry but I'm a bit confused with mod apps. Someone accepted as a writing mod will also be expected to write a piece for the zine? Are you worried about not having enough contributors or something?

The question you are referring to was supposed to say (and now says) that if you are selected as a moderator, you will have the option to create a piece for the zine in the category you are moderating for. We’re including this so that if someone is torn between applying to be a moderator and applying to be a contributor, they will have the opportunity to have their work published as part of the zine, and moderate in their chosen category.

The first draft of the moderator application was put together in the very early stages of our interest check, when we were not sure we would have enough people interested in contributing. However, by the end of our interest check, we decided to remove that requirement for moderator applications, as we received an overwhelming amount of interest from potential contributors.

for our samples on our applications, do our art/writing samples need to be stephcass pieces, or is anything okay?

So glad to hear you're excited!

For art samples, anything goes! However, if you are applying to write a comic, at least one sample must be a completed comic page. Additionally, we have received a large amount of requests for a NSFW add on in the interest check, and we will move forward with creating that pending we get enough applicants interested in participating in that part of the zine. If applying for the potential NSFW add on, one art sample must be NSFW.

For writing samples, any sample you submit must fall within the word count guidelines (1-4k words, at least one must be a completed piece, but other samples can be excerpts from longer pieces), and one sample must be fanfiction, but it is not required to be StephCass. We just want to see your ability to write for characters that are not your original creations! Also, as with the art samples, if you are applying for the NSFW add on, at least one sample must be NSFW.

Applications will go live on the 24th, and we cannot wait to see your application!

How open will the applications be? Like who would you accept and how do you plan on checking who to accept?

Applications will be open to anyone who wants to apply! The forms will open on the 24th, and shouldn't take too long to fill out. They'll ask for some basic things like your name, pronouns, and contact information, and then they'll ask about what you'd specifically like to create for the zine (for example, if you were applying to write fanfiction for the zine, you'd give a 2-3 sentence summary of a piece you think would go well in the zine), and you will provide a few examples of your work. The specific requirements for your samples depend on what role you are applying for, but are generally pretty loose. We require three examples of your work (for example, if applying to be a page artist, this would be three of your completed drawings). There will also be a space to provide any links to portfolios you may have, whether that is an Instagram page dedicated to your art, your AO3 profile with your published fanfic, or a personal website. We understand that some applicants may not have a digital portfolio, so this is entirely optional to include.
