But I had a question and I'm sorry if it's stupid but in 4x10 while Stiles and Malia are talking in the hospital, the door 'magically' locks itself and after they make up, it unlocks itself. I know it's related to Stiles' spark but I just don't understand what it means or foreshadows. So, do you have any theories about what it could mean?
It means a bunch of things. Sit down, get a drink. this might take awhile.
Okay, Stiles has a history of being able to do impossible things. Some of them are more obvious than others- The first clear cut example was in Raving, when he was laying down the circle of mountain ash. He ran out and still had 50 feet more to go, with not enough ash in his hand. But he talked himself into it, and closed his eyes, and when he was finally done, he’d somehow completed the circle.
Once that was documented, we started to look at other things, which only really come up in retrospect or when you can compare Stiles actions to other people- Stiles holding Derek up in a pool for two hours should be impossible. Stile breaking the mountain ash circle with just waving his hands over it- yes, that seems like ‘eh, it’s ash, it blows around’ but NO ONE else has been able to do that. Everyone else has to physically push the ash apart.
As time as gone on, we’ve seen more and more examples- Stiles fixing his jeep when he was tearing the damn alternator out! (That should not have fixed it) Stiles and the Chemist, where the show gave us ample numbers of times we could pause and count the bullets in Agent McCalls gun. There were ten. Braeden tells us there’s only ten bullets in a legal clip in California and to always Count The Bullets! (That was amazingly unsubtle for the show.) And then we get to the hospital scene.
In the hospital scene, we learn that Stiles, who feels guilty for not telling Malia about Peter, has been trying to apologize and has had no luck in being able to talk to her. He’s left messages, and sent text and nothing. So, he finally gets her into a room, and he’s making sure she’s not leaving until he’s said his piece. This is a fair concern, because Malia hasn’t listened to him yet. The door locks. Malia comments on it, and blames it on Melissa, and they have their conversation, and the door unlocks.
Now, what’s significant about that? So far, we’ve only seen Stiles using his powers when he’s been under a great deal of stress and when someone’s life is in danger. This breaks the pattern, in that no one was in life-threatening danger. So why did Stiles’s power manifest?
Here’s where it gets interesting. cupidsbower's done some brilliant meta on Stiles, and what he's hiding. He's been hiding his powers, and he's also been hiding his bisexuality, for the same reason. He's very worried about how his father and Scott are going to take the news that he's not 'Normal'. He's so worried about coming out, about facing that truth, that he's been acting crazy to be as normal as possible.
The whole thing with Malia and the pizza is another example. He’s trying to hard to be ‘normal’ that he’s actually being ‘abnormal’ trying to hold up the facade. If it’s so important for him to have a normal girlfriend that he uses his powers, then he’s really, really worried about hiding the truth of what he really is.
And that truth doesn’t want to say hidden. What three things can not long be hidden? The Sun(himself literally sun/son), the Moon(Derek Hale), and the Truth (he’s supernatural in someway and he’s sexually attracted to men and women). Stiles knows this, on some level. That was the lesson he gave in the van, not only to Liam and Derek, but also to himself.
In case he tried to push that lesson aside, the Universe made sure he could never forget.
Now, in the next season, Stiles is going to have to deal with all this. He’s going to have to deal with his father, who’s shown he doesn’t want to face the fact that his son might not be ‘normal’. And he’s going to have to deal with his best friend, who also love’s his normality more than it might be healthy. (Especially because it doesn’t really exist) He’s going to have to deal with his feelings- that he almost lost Derek, and what he finally knew just before he went into the church. And he’s going to have to deal with Malia, who might accidentally have fallen into the role of being a beard, and I suspect he’s going to have to deal with Kate.
So, the Hospital scene was pretty straightforward in some ways, and an important allusion to something much more significant in other ways. I’m hoping this made that a little bit clearer.
