Ayinger’s Oktober Fest-Märzen. A 3 of 4. Some awesome toffee and caramel notes in the nose, and very drinkable. Clean on the palate and a crisp finish. The nose and floral hop presence up front is quite complex for a märzen, and yet it’s simple enough you could have a liter or more. A great Oktoberfest beer.

I haven’t posted in awhile because I was in Virginia to visit my wife’s family and see her little brother get married. The good news for this blog is that we drove, and I filled the car with as much beer as possible. Look for some of these beers on the blog in the coming months. I know I’m looking forward to drinking them! [Oh, and one of those is a bottle of Kentucky bourbon. I’m excited about that too. Bourbon blog, maybe?]

Shiner's Oktoberfest

Style: Oktoberfest/Marzen

ABV: 5.8%

Date Reviewed: 10-9-2012

A light brown/cream soda color. Flavors are ok. There are malts and light fruit. The Samuel Adams Octoberfest was much better. I also really enjoyed Shiner's Ruby Redbird, but this just isn't really worth visiting.

Shipyard Brewing Company's Pumpkinhead

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 5.1%

This poured with a very light orange/yellow color. Malt aroma. Light cinnamon and pumpkin flavors. Some spiciness up front. Not very good.

Samuel Adams Octoberfest

Style: Oktoberfest/Marzen

ABV: 5.3%

This brew has a copper color. A clearly nutty aroma. The taste presents a pleasant maltiness with very light spices. I think this is a tasty, well-made beer. My first look at the style.

Blue Moon's Harvest Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 5.7%

Has a cool orange/red coloring. Quite a bit of spice without enough wheat. Cloves and nutmeg are definitely there. Just seems like a basic pumpkin ale. This is Coors attempt at looking like a craft brewer.

Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 5.0%

I smell spices, and maybe pumpkin pie. It has a good taste. The pumpkin comes through in a 'roasted pumpkin seed' sort of flavor instead of a 'pumpkin pie' taste. Despite being light on the pumpkin taste, it has a good overall flavor.

Newcastle Werewolf

Style: "Blood" Red Ale

ABV: 4.5%

I love the red tones in this beer. It's almost like rust water or something. Sweet tea maybe. Some fruit and chocolate on the nose. The taste is a rich dark chocolate. Velvety. It's rich but not heavy. Smooth, delicious. Has a nutty finish.

Lost Coast’s Great White Witbier. A 3 of 4. A very drinkable witbier - tons of nice citrus and other spice notes going on - so much more than cheaper witbiers. I’m a huge fan of bananas, and this delivers with some nice banana esters and a slightly sweet, drinkable body. Not the most nuanced out there, but drinkable, widely-available, and solid when you’re looking for something light on the palate and liver.

Blackstone Brewing Company Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 5.1%

For starters, Blackstone Brewing Company is headquartered in Nashville, TN. So that's pretty cool. I think the only other brewery here is Yazoo!.

This had a cream soda coloring. I was searching for a pumpkin nose but couldn't find one. The taste is full of spices and pumpkin. It just about tastes like a good pumpkin pie. It was much better than I expected and local even.

Samuel Adams Blackberry Witbier

Style: Witbier

ABV: 5.5%

The blackberry aroma is strong and sweet. It also has a very sweet taste. This is one of the better fruit beers I've had. I'm glad I tried it but I wouldn't have it again.
