I really love this little scene. It takes place after Fina’s stabbing, after her father has made up with her, and after Jaime tells Marta he is staying to try and fix their marriage. So we have a few things going on, namely that Fina’s overjoyed at having her father back in her life, and that she senses Marta is keeping something from her. Of course, she is. She’s not telling Fina about Jaime’s decision to stay. In that sense, it’s a brutal little scene because while we have Fina’s joy, and Marta’s tenderness with her, we also have the hidden truth. I have to say, the bit I like most, that makes me sad, too, is when Marta, explaining how she told Jaime that actually she didn’t know Fina that well (and she smiles as she says it, while you hear Fina laugh) then says, “ay, como si no te conociese yo.” It reads as, “I know you so well, I know you down to my bones.” It’s so lovely, and so bittersweet, that it just gets to me.
