Okay ugh. I have a lot to say about this.
Generally, I donāt dish out my opinion on many things online because I prefer to do my own thing and vibe but I have seen so many comments like ācomic artists canāt draw human anatomyā, ācomic book artists donāt know human proportionā, bla bla bla. Hereās the thing, though. And this goes for both male and female bodies. When it comes to comic book artists, most of them are not there to create a perfectly realistic pose that demonstrates flawless knowledge of the human bone and muscle structure.
They draw in this style because it looks more dynamic.
And honestly, thereās no point nitpicking that ābut they only do this to the female characters!!!ā because they donāt. Take this scene:
You think Captain Americaās body type and poses reflects those of an average human man? Not at all. What do they reflect? Dynamics of a fight/action scene. And thatās fine.
Look at the Wonderwoman image on the original pose. See how her back is curved much more than the unedited photo of the real woman beside it? Yeah, thatās cause the drawing is a) a drawing, b) not meant to showcase realistic anatomy, and c) emphasising the dynamics of the movement she is doing. She is dodging the blade by moving back.
There is an art YouTuber who explains this, in my opinion, perfectly. His name is Ethan Becker; āit doesnāt matter how good your anatomy is, if your poses arenāt dynamic.ā Here is the video, for those of you who want to watch it, and the timestamp for those who donāt want to watch the whole thing is 5:53

Please understand that my problem is not with the original post, because I do think itās interesting to see how much drawings of people can change from people. You ever seen one those videos on YouTube like, ā Family Guy in real lifeā where they Photoshop images to look like Family Guy characters, only extremely realistic? Yeah, doesnāt look too normal either. Yet nobody comes out and goes āthatās such an unrealistic drawing of anatomy!!! Fuck those artists, they donāt know proportions!!!ā
Because honestly, most comic book artists probably have a good understanding of human anatomy. Ever heard of the saying, āyou have to know the rules to break themā? Thatās exactly what theyāre doing. They know how the human body should look, which is why they know how to still make it look like a human body when it is in a much more emphasised, dynamic pose that a normal human would probably not be able to pull off.
Source? I and many artists I know study human anatomy and I learn to draw realistically before I applied certain rules and broke certain rules in order to be able to draw poses in a more illustrated style. Please note I use 'studyā and 'learnā rather than 'studiedā and 'learnedā because I think learning art is a very long process and there is always something new to learn. That doesnāt, however, mean I or other people, or comic book artists, donāt know how to do it at all.
My overall message here is to stop shitting on artists for not drawing 'realisticā body types or actions when that wasnāt the artists goal in the first place. If you enjoy realistic art, good for you. Enjoy that art just like anybody else would enjoy their favourite type of art. But donāt tell people that they draw wrong or 'whEre aRe ThE oRgAnS??ā when the drawing in question is clearly not meant to reflect natural anatomy in the first place.
Think of Stewieās head, guys. Think of his head.
