It’s weird to grow up in a family where you know you’re loved but you don’t feel loved. And then later in adulthood you understand how almost impossible it seems to cross that distance and let yourself experience closeness, how otherworldly love feels now and how love feels unbearable at times. You flinch when someone tries to wholeheartedly love you. And over and over you see so clearly how you cannot be loved unless it's from afar and love is mixed with that familiar sensation of distance and coldness.

the thing about literally every tumblr update is that i've spent so long on here that i've adapted to anything it can throw at me by sheer exposure. nothing short of burning this site to the ground and nuking the ashes until every user has nothing to return to could force me to evacuate, and even then it'd be in my own self interest rather than because i actually no longer feel welcome here. any other social media, on the other hand? i'd be dead on impact. i'm a highly specialized species adapted to survive the toxic nuclear waste dump that is tumblr dot com and if i move anywhere else the harsh new environment would rip my little online sicko beak to shreds in seconds.

I don’t think a lot of people understand that no matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that’s so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you’ll say “Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you’re right,” and that doesn’t mean you were “morally toxic” before, it means you’re a non-omniscient human capable of growth.

Also, some preferred terms for things will change and evolve, and terms we prefer now might eventually be considered gauche or even offensive, and that doesn’t mean you were a bigot at the time for using them. It means we evolved as a society and chose new terminology to reflect that change.

Nobody is a fully formed realisation of progressivism that can predict all shifts and modes of thought. The world will always change, and hopefully you will, too
