The SMS campaign is now complete.

Stroke is the number 3 cause of death in the US and the number 1 cause of long-term disability. The SMS team received a federal grant to educate the public about the risk factors and warning signs of stroke. The grant was aimed at educating the southern counties of Mississippi, but its reach has been much larger. We have realized the great need for this type of informational campaign. We would like to thank everyone who has participated as well as all those who have made it a goal to educate and assist those affected by stroke. You are all heros. We would like to encourage all the SMS followers to continue to wear your t-shirts and spread the word about stroke. Continue to be involved with volunteer organizations and events.

Telestroke treatment is helping more patients have access to this level of care despite where they are taken for treatment. Only a small fraction of acute stroke victims is currently treated with thrombolytics (<1.5% nationally), and few benefit from the expertise and experience of the stroke teams.

2. …Scientific statement says a remote exam using high-quality videoconferencing equipment is as effective as a bedside stroke evaluation.

3. Doctors communicate using digital video cameras, Internet telecommunications, robots, smart phones and other technology. Having a prompt neurological evaluation increases the possibility that you may receive clot-dissolving therapies (thrombolytics) or other clot-retrieving treatments in time to reduce disability resulting from stroke.
