MATISSE VS ARABESQUE: 0-1

L’idea dietro la nuova mostra ospitata dalle Scuderie del Quirinale di Roma sembrava molto affascinante: accostare le opere di Matisse alle influenze orientali che le hanno ispirate, dalle illustrazioni di Hiroshige alle ceramiche persiane. Il risultato, però, si è rivelato stranamente deludente. Le cause vanno cercate in un allestimento triste e banale, con la scelta di un anonimo colore panna per le pareti e la reclusione dei reperti archeologici in teche di vetro che le musealizzano senza esaltarle. Molto più intrigante sarebbe stata una maggiore connessione tra le due anime della mostra che così sembrano dialogare come nelle zone per gli incontri delle carceri americane, con un telefono mentre si guardano attraverso un vetro. L’assenza di opere famose di Matisse poi rende solo molto più interessante la parte archeologica, minimizzando il valore dell’artista. Più che un’occasione sprecata quindi, un vero passo falso per una sede espositiva che raramente lascia insoddisfatti.

MATISSE VS ARABESQUE: 0-1

The idea behind the new exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale of Rome seemed very charming: to place the works of Matisse near the Eastern influences that inspired them, from the illustrations of Hiroshige to Persian ceramics. The result, however, has proved strangely disappointing. The causes are to be found in a sad and banal set up, with the choice of an anonymous cream color for the walls and the imprisonment of the archaeological finds in museum like glass cases without enhancing them. It would be much more intriguing a greater connection between the two souls of the exhibition because now they seem to converse as in the areas for the meetings of the American prisons: with a phone while looking through a glass. The absence of famous works of Matisse then i makes a lot more interesting the archaeological part, minimizing the value of the artist. More than a wasted opportunity then, this is a real misstep for a venue that rarely leaves unsatisfied.

INSURGENT: THE UNEXPECTED SURPRISE 

What is personality? What does it mean to prefer intelligence or love, courage or self-sacrifice? Can we be many things together and at the same time be unique, divergent? This is the heart of Insurgent, the second chapter of the successful saga of the writer Veronica Roth started with Divergent, arriving in cinemas in these days. We had left Tris, Four, Caleb and Peter on the run after the attempted coup d’etat of Jeanine and now we follow them into the darkest and brightest corners of the post-apocalyptic world. But the real conflict lies in the mind of Tris, torn by guilt and struggling to accept her own nature.

This second film has a strong pace, where even the scenes of apparent calm are full of tension. A series of twists and turns leads to an unexpected and original ending that leaves with the urgent desire to know how the story continues. A great care for the setting and the costumes is added to the quality of the narrative, creating a very strong visual impact of the film. The only flaw is perhaps the protagonist Tris (Shailene Woodley), which lacks the overwhelming charm that can have, for example, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in the Hunger Games saga, and which is then overshadowed by the magnificent interpretation of Kate Winslet in the role of Jeanine. Perhaps her revenge comes at the end of the movie, and we’ll certainly need the third chapter to see her growth.

Che cos’è la personalità? Cosa significa prediligere l’intelligenza o l’amore, il coraggio o l’abnegazione? Si può essere tante cose insieme e al tempo stesso unici, divergenti? Questo il cuore di Insurgent, il secondo capitolo della fortunata saga della scrittrice Veronica Roth iniziata con Divergent, in arrivo al cinema in questi giorni. Avevamo lasciato Tris, Four, Caleb e Peter in fuga dopo il tentativo di colpo di Stato di Jeanine e ora li seguiamo negli angoli più oscuri e nei più luminosi di quel mondo postapocalittico. Ma dove avviene il vero conflitto è nella mente di Tris, lacerata dai sensi di colpa e in lotta per accettare la propria natura.

Questo secondo film ha un ritmo incalzante, dove anche le scene di apparente calma sono dense di tensione. Una serie di colpi di scena porta a un finale inaspettato e originale che lascia con il desiderio urgente di sapere come continua la storia. Alla qualità della narrazione si aggiunge una grande cura delle ambientazioni e dei costumi che rendono molto forte l’impatto visivo del film. Unica pecca sta forse proprio nella protagonista Tris (Shailene Woodley), a cui manca quel fascino travolgente che può avere, ad esempio Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) nella saga di Hunger Games, e che viene quindi messa in ombra dalla magnifica interpretazione di Kate Winslet nei panni di Jeanine. Forse la sua rivincita arriva nella parte finale, e servirà di certo il terzo capitolo per vederne la crescita.

CHAGALL A ROMA: LA RIVINCITA DELL’INCHIOSTRO

Le mostre di grandi autori famosi rischiano sempre di essere solo operazioni commerciali senza anima. Non è così per “Chagall Love and Life”, la grande esposizione del pittore russo ospitata fino al prossimo 26 luglio presso il Chiostro del Bramante di Roma. Del grande “ebreo errante” si conoscono bene i colori fiabeschi e i personaggi che anche quando vogliono essere reali sono impregnati di mito, ma nell’esposizione romana a stupire sono soprattutto i disegni a inchiostro. A emergere è un tratto deciso, capace di creare mondi intensi con poche linee.

La mostra è arricchita da un allestimento interattivo con suoni, videomapping, istallazioni per bambini e addirittura i testi originali illustrati da Chagall, come le fiabe di Jean de la Fontaine. Forse anche troppe cose che rischiano di distrarre dalla bellezza delle creazioni dell’autore e a volte provocano problemi con l’illuminazione di cornici e didascalie. L’esposizione è in collaborazione con l’Israel Museum da cui provengono tutte le opere, forse non le più famose del pittore, ma di sicuro di forte impatto e capaci di restituire il mondo complesso, intriso di amore e spiritualità, di Chagall.

CHAGALL IN ROME: THE REVENGE OF INK

The exhibitions of great famous authors are always in danger of being only commercial operations without a soul. This isn’t true for "Chagall Love and Life", the large exhibition of the Russian painter hosted until next July 26 at Chiostro del Bramante in Rome. We were well aware of the fabulous colors and characters that even when they want to be real are impregnated by myth realized by the great "wandering jew", but in the Roman exposition to impress are mostly ink drawings. To emerge is a determined stroke, able to create intense worlds with few lines.

The exhibition is enriched by an interactive set-up with sounds, videomapping, rooms for children and even the original texts illustrated by Chagall, as the fables of Jean de la Fontaine. Maybe even too many things that might distract from the beauty of the creations of the author and sometimes cause problems with the lighting of frames and captions. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Israel Museum from which all the works come, perhaps not the most famous of the painter, but certainly capable of a strong impact and able to return the complex world, full of love and spirituality, of Chagall.

Lungs: l’amore contro l’incertezza del presente / Lungs: love against the uncertainty of present

“Che cosa accade all’istinto in un’epoca dominata dall’incertezza, dalle catastrofi ecologiche, dalla crisi globale?”. È la domanda che si pone Massimiliano Farau, regista della pièce “Lungs” di Duncan Macmillan in arrivo dal 17 al 29 marzo al Teatro dell’Orologio di Roma. Si tratta di un dialogo amoroso di una giovane coppia che inizia la fatidica discussione sull’avere o meno un bambino. “Di fronte alla loro coscienza, il primo dubbio che sorge nell’ascoltatore è se questa non copra la paura di diventare adulti, di confrontarsi con un impegno definitivo che richiede di amare un essere che ancora non esiste. È questa l’incertezza più radicale nei protagonisti; la loro capacità di amare però, scopriranno e scopriremo, è più grande e tenace di quanto potessero immaginare”.

"What happens to the instinct in an era dominated by uncertainty, by ecological disasters, by the global crisis?". This is the question arisen by Massimiliano Farau, director of the pièce “Lungs” by Duncan Macmillan on stage from the 17th to 29th of March at the Teatro dell’Orologio of Rome. It is a loving dialogue of a young couple that begins the fateful discussion about having a baby or not. "Facing their consciousness, the first question that arises in the listener is whether that does not cover the fear of becoming adults, to confront a definitive commitment that requires to love a being that does not exist yet. This is the most radical uncertainty in the protagonists; their ability to love, however, we all will discover, is larger and tenacious than they could imagine".
