I’m just realizing why this post is blowing up with all kinds of non-Jewish people on Tumblr.
When I read this post, I think about Christians inserting themselves into the narratives of the Tanakh, and intentionally mistranslating and decontextualizing things in order to shoehorn Jesus in and validate their religion and convert people. I think about Christians trying to take away my relationship with G-d and saying that THEY are the chosen people now. I think about Christians trying to say that THEY worship a god of love, but Jews worship the “Old Testament” G-d of fire and brimstone. I think about the harmful Evangelical movement I grew up in, the Messianic movement, which twists holy verses from the Tanakh to trap Jewish (and gentile, but mostly targeted at Jewish) people in bondage. How they try to pervert our OWN holy writings in an effort to erase our religion.
When most people in a Christian dominated culture read it, they think about Christians using verses from the Tanakh to oppress and control people, specifically the verse in Leviticus 18 which has been interpreted as prohibition on homosexuality and used to justify the humiliation and death of so many.
And you know what? Both are correct. I have also had that verse used to twist and destroy parts of my life and my self. I understand.
But please know that the original spirit in which I shared this post was not just as a queer person who has been oppressed by Christians, it was as a JEWISH queer person who has been oppressed by Christians in many ways, using MY OWN BOOK.
Gentiles, do not use this post as an opportunity to hate on all religions.
Christians, do not use this post as an opportunity to proselytize.
