Dreams

Ichigo never really thought about his dreams for the future after becoming a soul reaper. He figured he wouldn’t live long enough to worry about his future. After the war with the Quincy ended he realized that maybe it was time to consider what he wanted to do with his life. He knew he wanted to finish high school, but after that he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted.

Once he really sat down and thought about things Ichigo’s love for Shakespeare got him thinking about studying literature in college. He isn’t entirely sure what he wants to do, but he figures there is plenty of time for him to decide. He stepped down from being a substitute soul reaper with the blessings of the Captain Commander, who made Ichigo promise to come visit them in the Soul Society from time to time.

Ichigo applied to a University and was accepted. As soon as he graduates high school he will begin a future he never thought he would never have.

           Sitting alone on the steps of his barracks, Renji knows all his work for the day has been completed. Nothing to do at this time - so, the man figures he’s long overdue for relaxation. Reaching for the six-stringed instrument, fingers begin to coast over the neck as a scratchy tune sounds. It’s been a while since he’s last played, but it’s like riding a bike. Once you know, you never really forget, so he takes a second, breathes and slowly this act begins to sound more like an actual song.

Ichigo was walking alone watching the sun start to set when he heard someone playing the guitar. He followed the sound and it led him straight to the steps of the Sixth Division barracks. He was surprised when he saw the familiar bright red hair of his best friend. Ichigo smiled slightly at the relaxed posture of the lieutenant as he approached. Not wanting to interrupt, Ichigo quietly sat down on the stairs next to Renji and listened.

Byakuya betrayed no surprise as the foreign elf dropped from above. He had his own bow across his back. It was a favored weapon and height was always an advantage.

And then Byakuya was mentally cursing Yoruichi again, because how in all that he held sacred had he managed to make it to the woodelves’s lands. Calming himself quickly, Byakuya bowed his head slightly in return and considered his options. He could announce himself truthfully and face the risks of what would be come of being a king wandering by himself in foreign woods or he could lie and take the risks associated with that path. Mentally sighing at what was likely to come, he made his decision.

“I am King Byakuya of the Kuchiki Clan of High Elves, and I would be…most obliged if I could encroach on your hospitality for the night.” His tone betrayed his reluctance to rely on a foreign dignitaries aid, however informally, but he bowed again a few inches at the waist this time to express his gratitude at not having to walk home through the night.

It was a struggle to hide the surprise he felt when the mystery elf identified himself. Why in the world was a king of one of the High elf clans traveling this far from his lands alone? He had to fight off his curiosity in favor of being a proper host to the visiting king. Ichigo bowed again. “It is an honor to meet you King Byakuya.”

He heard the reluctance in the other elf’s voice. All elves were proud people, but High Elves most of all. The prince knew that High Elves tended to regard Woodelves as their primitive and uncultured cousins. Perhaps this would be an opportunity to show the High Elf king the truth about Ichigo’s people. They were much more than what they seemed.

“Follow me. The accommodations might not be what you’re used to, but I can promise you a safe place to spend the night.” There were so many questions he wanted to ask, but it would be improper for a prince to question a king. So Ichigo held his tongue as he started to lead King Byakuya towards the village.“I’m sure my father will want to speak with you.”

Gin canted his head watching Kurosaki. He hadn’t expected to see the orange haired unmaker of Aizen here, no he hadn’t expected to see anyone. Or rather, not anyone he knew especially not wandering along these overgrown train tracks. He’d seen Kurosaki first which was good, however, his aura seemed…different almost like he lacked a spiritual presence?

His eyes almost seemed to be drained of the power he had once seen, what happened? Being graciously exiled when it was discovered he had not fully perished barred the snake from information soul society would hold as common knowledge. The simple fact: Ichigo Kurosaki had given up his powers to stop Sosuke Aizen. So it was in curiosity, careful to mind his now false arm Gin slid down from the hill he had stood on closer to his ex-enemy.

Ichigo didn’t know him personally and the anxiety of confronting any of his past in this state wasn’t there. So perhaps that was why Gin could approach him in his own present disheveled state.

“Ya don’t look so well; Ichigo.”

It had been several months since his battle with Aizen and things were difficult to say the least. Ichigo was having a hard time adjusting to life without his shinigami powers. His friends tried to get him to hang out and do normal teenager things, but he always declined their invitations. He liked being alone now. He spent a lot of time walking. Exploring parts of Karakura Town that he had never been to took his mind off of things. Tonight he was walking along the old train tracks on the outskirts of town. It was a clear night and the stars were more visible this far away from the bright lights of the city.

He heard a familiar voice behind him and turned quickly. He reached for Zangetsu instinctively when he saw who was there, but dropped his hand back down to his side with a sigh. He wondered if that instinct would ever fade. He took a few steps closer to Gin and studied him quietly. Seeing the ex-captain again reminded him that he was not the only one who lost something in the war with Aizen.

“You should talk. You’re not looking so good yourself. What brings you out here, Gin?”
