Random thought, but I think it's funny how a lot of people interpret Iron Man as just some rich dude, an asshole or a genius, but never go beyond that

Like he's supposed to be a knight in shining armor who gets his strength from his heart

He literally get his power from his shining heart, and sometimes the arc reactor even looks like a heart, and he uses a literal shining armor, yet people don't connect the dots

And I would say that maybe it isn't that obvious, but there are comics where Tony is a literal medieval knight , so Idk lmao

Tony Stark is NOT selfish. (A rant pointed at a guy at my work who told me Tony was a selfish asshole)

I don’t give a damn what else you think

The fact that Tony Stark surrounded himself with people who actually argued with him is such a great way to subtly tell the audience that he wasn’t selfish.

He could have surrounded himself with people who adored him and placed him on a pedestal and never talked back. But where’s the fun in that? his closest friends were all people who had no qualms with pissing him off and asking him if he was out of his mind.

Pepper has hold him off multiple times and he loved her even more for it

Rhodey has called him out on his bullshit more times than I can remember and he took the damn advice.

Peter yelled at him for not being there and he stepped out of the fucking suit.

Tony has willingly taken the blame for a multitude of massive plot points in the MCU. Including but not limited to Ultron (which wasn’t even his fault IMO) and some plot points in Civil war.

All I remember from Iron man 2 is that he was dying, and at the same time pushing everyone away and giving everything away in fear of causing those closest to him any harm.

In iron man three he internalizes his feelings so much as to not bother others, that he cannot keep a lid on it and fully breaks down.

Tony stark has paid for upgrades, damages, repairs and other expenses for the entirety of the Avengers without so much as asking ANYTHING back.

Tony may not be a completely good person. He’s grey as fuck. But hell, so am I. All I’m saying is that there is no reason at all, why you should call him selfish when he has proven otherwise in every single movie he’s in.

AND!! Every time someone proves themselves smarter or more capable than him in any specific field. His first thought is not a ‘how dare you’ it’s an ‘I need you’.

Stark knows his own brilliance, but he also knows the intelligence of others. And he has no qualms with respecting than someone if they prove themselves to be someone worth his respect.

Omg this! I wanna highlight on the part where you mentioned that he wouldn’t be insulted or offended or has his ‘ego’ hurt if someone else were smarter or more capable or whatever than him.

In Age of Ultron when Dr. Cho said about her own work as a geneticist and her regeneration cradle, “This is the next thing, Tony. Your clunky metal suits are going to be left in the dust.” Tony says, “Well, that’s exactly the plan.” He agrees! He wants her work to outdo his.

When he met Peter Parker, he complimented him on his web shooters and offered to give him an upgrade on his suit that would make Peter more comfortable.

He also donated to every student at MIT and funded each and every one of their projects.

Wakanda is the most advanced country in the world technology-wise and surpasses, Tony’s and he doesn’t even seem to be offended by that.

In Avengers: Endgame when Tony asks how the innovating is going and Rocket says, “You’re only a genius in Earth, pal.” Tony doesn’t even complain or retort back, because he knows that Rocket is hella smart too and he that he just simply doesn’t care/take offense to the comment. He’s a chill guy about it.

Speaking of weapons, he knows when to call out other people on their bs when science and innovation isn’t going to be helping people. An example is in IM2 when Justin Hammer was being a hypocrite about demeaning Tony in court about having an Iron Man suit when in reality Hammer was doing the same thing but WORSE and how he was on the way to building a ‘better’ and more bigger military weapons for the U.S. to use. Turns out that it caused a safety hazard for Hammer employees.

There are many other examples I’m sure, and we can even refer to the comics where he supports other people’s technological work (if he knows it’ll be safe) and supports young heroes to the point where he becomes a father figure to them.

Tony wants other individuals to create and innovate and lead, because he knows it will help the world grow. He knows that science can and will help and protect people in many different ways that doesn’t involve weapons. And I think this plays well into how selfless he actually is.

Pepper’s “You’re going to kill yourself, Tony. I’m not going to be apart of it.” in IM and his response of “I shouldn’t be alive unless it was for a reason.”

the entirety of IM2 is him being passively suicidal. He may not be trying to kill himself, but he’s not doing anything to prevent it and being overly reckless

In IM3 we see him struggle with PTSD and how it’s changed him and the relationships around him.

And that’s just the IM trilogy. Theres SO MUCH MORE I could talk about if we were to go into his past and the avengers movies
