The 5 Day Study Plan
So admittedly, I donāt fully know where the idea of the 5-day study plan came from. I first learned about it during a work training, and it instantly made sense to me as it strikes a good balance between studying too far in advance and doing last minute cramming. As I have touched on in previous blog posts, I find the idea of studying more than a week in advance to be impractical and a waste of time as most people will forget most of what they have studied/learned unless they have pre-determined and implemented a really good system of spaced repetition (click here for my blog post on spaced repetition). At the same time, cramming does not work because it leads to unnecessary stress, panic, lack of sleep, and can undermine your confidence going into the exam. Furthermore, many studies have shown that cramming does not allow for long-term understanding/memory, which may or may not be necessary depending on the subject and your future study/career plans.
I prefer study methods that prioritize spending time on what you donāt know, or which designates different amounts of time to different subjects based on your knowledge level and familiarity with the subject. However, in the event that studying that way does not work for you, or if you are truly unsure of what you do and do not know, I recommend the 5-day study plan as detailed below.
Step 1: Break the material into four (relatively) equal chunks. This can be done in any way that makes sense to you. By chapter is probably easiest, but there are other ways that might also work, such as by lecture topic. It may be useful to look at the syllabus, or at your study guide when deciding on your four chunks.Ā Ā
Step 2: Plan to spend a minimum of 2.5 hours per day studying for this test, if its hard you might need more time, such as 3 or 4 hours, but make sure you prioritize the minimum of 2.5 hours per day for the five days prior to the test.
Step 3: Each day consists of two important steps: Prepare and Review. You should establish 2-3 prepare and review strategies that work best for you, and stick to these 2-3. Hereās a list of ideas to get you started, with my personal favorites in bold.
Step 4: Now you combine steps 1 and 3 to create your study schedule.
Here is an example:
*In order to maximize your 5-day study schedule I would recommend composing the parts/groupings in such a way so that the hardest material falls into part A, and the easiest into Part D.Ā Technically all of the 5-day study schedule explanations I have read just randomly separate the topics into the parts, but smarter strategies would be separating them by difficulty level, or by how long ago you initially learned that material.

Taken from my studygram
Today I found out we owe most of our punctuation to the medieval Irish. Theyād had no experience with Latin before, so when these Latin manuscripts started showing up written in all caps with no spaces between the words looking like a brick wall of hot nonsense, the Irish sighed and said āgive me that feckin quillā and they did such a good job of editing the texts and producing readable copies that their conventions kind of stuck with us through the ages
I lack motivation
So itās been two weeks since Iām back to college and I have zero motivation to study and do homework. I enjoy going to class but once Iām back home I just want to chill or do other stuff. I know that I have to study but I just canāt.
The last three months Iāve been working so whenever I got home I could do everything I wanted. After three months, the habit is still here and I find it very difficult to put myself again in study mode.
I donāt know what to do to motivate myself since all the usual tips and tricks havenāt worked yet.
wow it me
First off, thereās this neat quote that I honestly need someone to read to me literally every day of my life:
Fuck motivation.
Itās a fickle and unreliable little state that isnāt worth your time. Better to cultivate discipline than to rely on motivation.
Force yourself to do things, to get out of bed, to go the gym, to work harder and smarter; force yourself to do stuff when you donāt feel like doing anything.
Motivation is fleeting, and itās easy to rely on because it requires no concentrated effort to get. Motivation comes to you, you donāt even have to chase after it.
Discipline is reliable; motivation is momentary.
The real question isnāt how to keep yourself motivated, itās how to train yourself to work without it.
If you donāt mind my unsolicited advice:Ā
I donāt know how you usually study but I find it really helps to change things up. I always despair because I remember how well I stuck to a schedule during the semester and then I lose all that structure and flow when I take a break (which is important too but always sets me back). So for example if I had been using my desk during free time when I was on break, my brain now connects my desk to leisure time, which means it helps if I study at the library/kitchen table/anywhere else. This might also be worth a shot in your situation because that way you donāt go back into chill mindset and keep a mental divide. I hate studying at the library normally but I find it does work for refocus. Once Iām kinda back with a solid one to two hours per day I find I can move my study back to my work space at home.
Also, I will let my friends know when Iām supposed to be studying for a class that we both take and then if they hit me with questions that I canāt answer (because obviously I didnāt do work), this will kinda kick my ass into gear as well. (I am fueled 50% by spite and 50% by the fear of embarrassing myself.)Ā
I probably donāt need to tell you to minimize distractions but if you really cannot focus consider maybe asking a parent/sibling/roommate/friend to physically take possible distractions away from you. You can always stare into the void instead of doing work even with a forest timer running, but I find it does get a little boring after a while ;)
For me, it works better to ease back into it with a subject or topic that is either not too hard or genuinely interests me. So if the prospect of linearly going through your material seems boring or daunting, maybe get started with a more interesting chapter, watch a related video on youtube or documentary (but definitely be careful with that lmao).Ā
And finally, I will sometimes do little tasks that arenāt particularly fun but relatively easy and that you can cross off the to do list as well, like the dishes, taking out the trash, etc, to get more into a productive mindset and gain momentum.Ā

20 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO EVERYDAY 1. Wake up earlier. Not only does this improve productivity but it also gives you more time to make a good, hearty breakfast. 2. Make your bed. Letās be real, being welcomed to a tidy bed after a long day at work/school (or a long day in general) is probably the best feeling anyone will ever experience. 3. If you want, spend a little more time on your appearance. Take some time choosing an outfit, applying make up or whatever. Do what helps you boost your confidence and self-esteem. 4. Stay hydrated, folks. Keep a bottle of water with you wherever you go. 5. Stretch everyday or start yoga (or do both, why not?) 6. Create a playlist consisting of songs that make you happy and listen to it. Listen to songs for the mood you want to be in, instead of the mood you are in. 7. Compliment at least one person per day. This could be an acquaintance, co-worker, class mate, stranger, whoever! 8. Use your manners. If someone holds the door for you, lets you go first etc, they did it voluntarily and didnāt have to do it, so a āthank youā wouldnāt hurt. 9. Eat your fruit and vegetables and always choose the healthy version over the junk food. 10. Have a good laugh. Catch up with friends, watch some āParks and Recreationā, go see some stand-up comedy, reminisce about funny moments that have happened to you. You donāt need to be a doctor to know that humour has many benefits. 11. Be optimistic. Always look at the positives. Thereās no point on focusing on the negatives because that isnāt going to help anyones mood at all. 12. Exercise. It doesnāt have to be anything to intense. A run around the block, a walk with your dog or even a āJust Danceā session will do the job.Ā 13.Bring a book/magazine or collect the daily newspaper with you. Spend you spare time reading. 14. Try and learn something new everyday. This can either be an interesting fact you saw online or a new skill someone taught you. 15. Help others when you are able to. Help your classmates with school work or offer to help you struggling neighbour lift those heavy objects. 16. Stop procrastinating. No matter how unmotivated you are to, push yourself and complete what you need to complete. Do what you gotta do. You know youāll love yourself for doing it. 17. Drink some tea, because that stuff is goooooood (and also beneficial). 18.Make time to do things that help you relax, whether thatās painting, having baths, doing you nails or going for a run. 19. Donāt dwell on your mistakes, but instead grow and learn from them. 20. And lastly, be kind to yourself. If you love who you are, everyone else will
