Art In The Face Of War
Art is hope. It is how people express their feelings, their views, and opinions. It helps us think, not only rationally but also emotionally. The different perspectives, outcomes, and works are what help us identify the flaws and shortcomings of the system we live in. What role does the artist play? Well, to fight is to be passionate, and to be passionate is to express. Art is what causes wars and ends them. It is the pinnacle of suffering and, contradictionally, also the height of joy.
Firstly, the thing that can capture human emotions is art. People use it as their expression. It is essentially a limb—when not used, it refuses to work. This refusal can, in fact, affect the whole system. Art is what keeps us sane in times of hardship and suffering. The point made to be captured is that human beings are social animals. Without connection, we will wither and die. This connection is given to us by common interests and perspectives. In times of war, it is even more important to consider these facts.
Additionally, art as a weapon is always a catalyst for destruction. It is the voice of the common people fighting against the injustice and suffering that were unjustly forced upon them. As the singer sings, or the artist paints, the world shifts. As the writer writes, the fates rewrite history with them. They are essentially the connoisseurs of the modern world, and without them, the rest would be superficial.
But art doesn’t just affect its creators. Appreciators and critics together admire the ability of a good painting to shape the world. How many wars have been fought over culture, yet it has been dismissed in the face of modern technology and its limitless potential? It lights a fire in the hearts of the listeners, the readers, and inspires them to keep on fighting. Not for the country, but for themselves.
Art exists as identity. Historically, all cultures have accepted art as the most beautiful form of expression. To fight amongst ourselves and to kill the creators and curators of these beautiful creations is to kill oneself. A nation doesn’t exist without its people and culture. And culture must be respected and revered in the face of the end.
