Rose Quartz is honestly one of the most interesting characters in Steven Universe, and I personally like her progression arc, and the take on it as it’s played backwards.
I was genuinely dissapointed to see that the epilogue series didn’t have Steven finally settle with where his standing is with his mom, or if they did and I just missed it, I was upset to see the series not give Steven peace with his mother.
The series just seemed to continue giving Steven reasons to hate her for her early mistakes in her arc, instead of focusing on how far she’s come, and that she had to deal with the consequences of the war she caused, I.E. the corruption of nearly all the gems on earth that fought by her side and who she fought for, and spending the rest of her lifespan gathering them with the remains of her close friend group and trying and failing to help them. I just personally think this part of Rose Quartz’s story is overlooked.
Some SU peeps
Okay but honestly fucking shit like this when they show Zuko’s scar side when talking about Sozin and then having the bar pass and have his non-scar side when Iroh says Roku is his great grandfather if EXACTLY the kind of shit that elevates this show to where really no other show has ever come and probably never will
I mean if you frame it in a photo it looks much better, in reality it was a moving shot. Still nice but not amazing. What really is an amzing shot is this
Who is realy imprisioned here? The way this shot is framed makes it clear that Zuko is in a prison of his own mind. In fact you can look at how Zuko and Iroh are generally framed in this scene
Zuko:
and Iroh:
Even in shots where Iroh is framed together with the iron bars he is far removed from them while Zuko is right in front:
What takes the cake though is the following shot sequence:
When it shows Iroh it zooms in from this:
To this:
While with Zuko it’s the exact reverse. It zooms out from this:
To this:
Say what you want but man Avatar had some amazing shot composition.
Also the reason The Last Airbender was better than Korra is because atla had Zuko and Iroh, while Korra didn’t. Fight me.
In addition to this scene being very well done, the whole The Avatar and the Firelord episode is just genius. It just makes the parallels between Zuko and Aang so much more powerful in retrospect. They weren’t on parallel paths just because. They were on parallel paths because they’re two parts of one lineage: Roku’s Fire Nation lineage and his spiritual-mediator Avatar lineage. And throughout the series the two of them are paired up through visual language, and the show even goes as far as match-cuts between the two of them as they’re in different locations and different fights. I forget where, but I KNOW there’s a shot where Aang is dodging in a fight and basically running towards the viewer and it cuts straight to Zuko doing the exact same thing, like they’re two enactments of one story.
And the twin blades? Zuko himself says they’re two halves of a single weapon, and shouldn’t be thought of as separate. The twin blades which we really first see in The Blue Spirit storyline, in which Aang asks Zuko if they COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS. It’s been stated that the blades represent the good and evil parts of Zuko, but isn’t that just a direct result of him grappling with his lineage, which is directly tied to Aang?
In conclusion: I am not ok and will never be ok. Thanks Avatar.
it's 2022. donald trump has died in disgrace days after being impeached and jailed. my chemical romance's new album is coming out the same day as the new spiderverse movie. the lizzo and janelle monaé collab song is blowing up the radio. lil nas x has a verse in it. you and your partner have time and energy for dates after work after jeff bezos' assets have been seized and distributed to the public in the wake of his arrest for keeping employees in unsafe working conditions.
oh what a life

Steven Universe Future Finale - Promo
HERE’S THE PROMO FOR THE FINALE YOU CAN ALL SCREAM NOW
I’m not touching Greg discourse. Whenever SU stirs up discourse, it’s because the episode hits too close to home for people at varying stages of addressing their own relatable experiences.
However. Steven does have a right to be upset either way. He always felt more in touch with his gem side than his human side, and over the years (ex: We Need To Talk), it’s been wearing on him. Now that he’s finally unpacking everything he never had an opportunity to think about before, he’s grown to relate all his problems to the gem in his belly. He’s never had the human experiences to put into perspective that what Greg lived with (which a lot of our community should be able to relate to, even my dad) can be just as impactful on a human as how the Diamonds impacted his mom. He feels like his best chance at connecting with his humanity was taken away from him. But he’s not in the right state right now to be thinking about where other people are coming from. He’s got caregiver burnout, he’s already worn thin trying to put everyone else’s tragic backstories before his own, and he just can’t keep doing it without some sort of break, or he will break.
It’s frustrating to find out that whether human or gem, people are people. And it’s frustrating when you have so many traumatic experiences that everything seems to come right back to them. Especially when you aren’t properly equipped yet for healing. I don’t really have a way to close this. But it makes sense why it didn’t give Steven what he needed the way it did for Greg.
Please don’t mind me I’m on a full corruption hype at the moment
I’m making this post primarily to cheer me up, but to also make a point on something. we’re all not shy over the fact that steven is a big lad, but I’m not sure on how many people understand how amazing that is. steven is a canon coded fat teenage protagonist who isn’t used exclusively as comic relief, that’s so fucking awesome.
it’s normal. it’s not used as comedy or to belittle him over his body size it’s just… normal for the show, & I love that. steven universe & future are the only shows I’ve seen where this is the case too. I’m gonna use vld as a comparison here, believe me I don’t want to but its fits. hunk garrett is the yellow paladin of the show, he’s also a fat teenager but it’s treated nothing like how steven is.
the fat jokes thrown his way, the stereotypes with him being half samoan as well as his end game following said stereotypes. it was really disheartening to watch if I’m honest, watching a character I love have his writing played off as a joke. it still hasn’t set well with me now that I think about it, he got done dirty in that show.
now let’s take this back to steven. sure in some of the earlier episodes they animated him very… well fat, they animated folds on him, one even over his gem after tying to open his temple room, but is was never used to joke about his body. just that steven was a big kid, still is, & with the movie & future showing how he’s grown yet still keeps his stocky frame it’s lovely to see.
they could have easily used his height change to stretch his body up, but they didn’t. hell rebecca even put a note in the movie’s art book that was along the lines of “keeping his iconic stocky silhouette.” the official wiki also upsets me with his description. to use the official definition:
lean
(of a person or animal) thin, especially healthily so; having no superfluous fat
steven isn’t lean, his body weight is just more proportionate now. there are so many instances in future & after snow day where it shows this, don’t tempt be to get a stockpile of screenshots because I will asdgasg. also, using the argument of him being vegetarian is making him leaner is bogus. he doesn’t consume meat, every other bit of animal produce however he can consume like the cheese on his pizza.
steven being a fat teenage protagonist & it not being used as a joke against him is incredible. it makes kids, people in general, who share a similar size to him feel as if they’re not a joke, that they are valid. that they are capable of doing great things because they are capable, their body shouldn’t be a factory in what they can & can’t do.
the reason I say I’m writing this to cheer me up is because, as you can tell by my name, I love steven. he’s my adorable, round lad. artists drawing him the size he is, writers writing his description as being the size he is, it all makes me so happy. seeing people love him for the way he is makes me happy.
tl;dr steven is my fat son & I appreciate rebecca & the crewniverse for not making his body size out to be a joke.
