I want to create a master playlist for radiostatic/ radiosilence! I figure if we have one big, central list of songs from all different genres, we can each pick and choose faves for our own personal lists.

Depending on how many recs I receive, I may break it into two separate playlists for radiosilence and radiostatic, or sort by emotional vibe, but for now it’s just one.

SERIOUSLY like ACTUALLY though! Vox was doing just fine, he was actually probably the most stable and successful he'd ever been and VoxTek was thriving, and Alastor took one look at all that and just said "Oh no way, nuh uh, you're not getting over ME."

"You'll have to try harder than that, Old Pal." Alastor literally did not need to pick up the watch and taunt Vox like that, but he loves ragebaiting the TV moron and knew it would get Vox right back to where he wanted him. Deer knows how to play his picture box hook, line, and sinker to keep Vox where he wants him, he'll have none of that "Vox getting over him" poppycock. And then in S2 he realized he could take it even FURTHER and bait Vox into breaking Alastor's deal with Rosie.

Just rewatched Episode 1 and...

Literally the first thing we learn about Alastor in the series proper is that he has...some mysterious problem with TV. Like hmmmm...

His first scene is him being so miffed about TV that he sabotages his new project and, later on, blows his deal with Vaggie on "Don't make me engage with TV tech again" because for some reason he has some giant problem with it.

Even with over 500 kudos, I still think “Love Potion In A Can” is criminally underrated. If you skipped this one bc you read the summary and assumed it was noncon, do yourself a favor and try it out. The plot twist at the end of chapter one is just *chef’s kiss*. I’m so obsessed with this fic that I have to run in circles like an overexcited dog whenever it updates.

(Okay so I had some thoughts about Alastor and Vox - so I wrote them down. I think the thoughts are interesting so here you go)

I also want to explore Alastor’s sense of ownership over Vox. They both have their own sense of ownership over each other I think. However, Vox’s ownership is made very apparent by his fits of jealousy, possessiveness and anger that arise when Alastor has meaningful relationships/interactions with other.

However, I think Alastor has his own sense of ownership over Vox. Where Vox is insecure about whether Alastor is actually his or not, Alastor is secure in the belief that Vox is his in a way Vox can never be anyone else’s. I don’t think this is in a sexual way but instead in a more mind, body and soul way.

Alastor fully believes that Vox will center him in any situation. He also fully believes that Vox will pick him over anyone else. And repeatedly Vox proves him right.

However, Alastor doesn’t think Vox is like this because Alastor believes Vox loves him. Vox’s feelings of affection and love are entirely irrelevant to him in this conversation. No – Alastor thinks that Vox is his because he has made himself into this unattainable thing for Vox to chase after forever. And the moment that Alastor in anyway becomes attainable to Vox – Alastor will no longer hold any part of Vox’s focus beyond just a trophy on his shelf he looks at from time to time.

On a side note it can be argued that if this is the case then why didn’t Vox lose interest in Alastor in season 2 after their deal? Why was Alastor so comfortable in just handing himself to Vox if not handing himself to Vox is what keep Vox as his?

Well the rebuttal to that argument would be that through their deal Vox only attains a prisoner. Vox’s only gain from that deal was unfettered access to proximity to Alastor. What Vox doesn’t gain is closeness with Alastor, recognition from Alastor or even emotional access to Alastor.

We see him try to get those things in that conversation that he had with Alastor after the whole propaganda parade. He tires to gain emotional closeness and access to Alastor by offering him a drink and asking him questions about his motives and internal thoughts and feelings. And yes he dresses it up as a question over how Alastor became so powerful in the first place but take a closer look at his first approach.

It mimics what Mimzy someone who Vox has every right to believe has emotional access and closeness to Alastor tells Angel Dust. One could even argue that Vox is trying to slip into his old script of what used to get Alastor to open up when Alastor last allowed them to have proximity like this.

We also see Vox trying to gain recognition from Alastor by pushing away his partners, gain the support of all of hell and attacking heaven.

Also take note of the way Alastor always deflects everything back onto Vox and never let’s himself be the subject of their conversations. Again and again we see Alastor deny access to him emotionally and as much as the fandom like to take advantage of this situation to give Vox access to Alastor physically in fanfics it’s unlikely that Alastor would let that happen. Just as Alastor didn’t let himself be interrogated because that wasn’t explicitly part of their deal it’s also likely that Alastor would not let himself be taken advantage of physically as that wasn’t what he agreed to in the deal.

So really what Alastor is doing with that deal that he makes with Vox is put the unattainable thing in front of Vox – so very close and yet so far away – and using the way Vox chases after it to achieve his own ends.

(You’ve heard about Vox dehumanizing and comodifying himself to gain the attention and love of the masses. I now introduce you to Alastor too dehumanizing and using himself as a tool to achieve what he wants. Which Alastor does this a lot. I’m getting side tracked but Alastor contorting himself into an untouchable monster who cannot be hurt and as such does not need care, community and support is it’s own type of dehumanization which refuses himself emotional vulnerability and just an over all ability to process negative emotions without projecting them onto others)

I know that a lot of people believe that the reason that Alastor rejected Vox – and rejected him so brutally – was because Alastor thought Vox was trying to use and betray him, but this perpective of Alastor’s character would suggest an entirely seprate reason for his reaction.

Vox is someone that can never be satisfied. He has developed compulsions, habits and perhaps even an entire lifestyle around chasing after the next new thing. I propose that Alastor at some point during their acquaintanceship learned about this aspect of Vox. Alastor at first thought that for Vox this only applied to things like success, power and recognition/admiration.

(Somewhat like how Alastor also has compulsions towards chasing after power while also simultaneously knowing that no amount of power will ever be enough. And the power I’m referring to here isn’t reigning over territories sort of power. Alastor would hate being a ruler. He would hate having to manage people and tell them what to do constantly. What Alastor is chasing after is the kind of power that gives him freedom rather the power that traps him. This is why as soon as the power that comes from Rosie becomes to undeniably like a leash he takes such extreme/risky actions to break it.)

Believing that Vox’s compulsion towards chasing after the next new things only applied to those things let Alastor feel comfortable in his relationship with Vox. It let him show moments of emotional expression – like the little laugh he gave when Vox did an impression of him. This would perhaps be Alastor first relationship (or his first one in quiet a while) that actually had room for Alastor’s emotions and not just the other person’s. With Rosie, I imagine with the power dynamic that comes with her holding his soul does lead most of their interaction to center more around what Rosie wants from Alastor or what she’s thinking or feeling – because those things would affect Alastor directly in that relationship while on the other hand Rosie wouldn’t be much affected by Alastor’s internal state unless he does something like he did in season 2. Same with Alastor’s relationship with Mimzy. I find it hard to imagine that Mimzy would in any way perform emotional labor for Alastor. She just doesn’t seem like the sort to perform emotional labor for anyone. Additionally, as we’ve seen in cannon she is known to come to Alastor only when she has something she wants him to take care of. I can see Mimzy coming to Alastor to complain about her emotions with the expectation that he will fix whatever’s upsetting her but in the hypothetical scenario (hypothetical because Alastor understand Mimzy and would never embaress himself in this way) that Alastor comes to Mimzy to complain about his emotions Mimzy would likely get bored within two second and say something like ‘what does any of that have to do with me’.

I’m not bring this up to go ‘oh poor poor Alastor’ and ‘Oh shitty Mimzy’ because that is not the point. Alastor is an adult who has had plenty of time to explore himself and the relationships he likes to be a part of. I see Alastor as being quiet free in the relationships he chooses to keep and dicard (i.e. Vox for example) with the only exceptions being his relationship with Rosie and until the season 2, his relationships with the Hazbin Hotel crew.

Alastor rather than seeing his friendship with Mimzy as a bad friendship (something Husk clearly sees this as) Alastor actually delights in it. Alastor is actually drawn to friendships like these because they reinforce his self-image as an unfeeling invulnerable monster. And part of that self-image is that be hurt emotionally or physically and thus does not need friends that want emotional vulnerability from him.

Though he can only take Mimzy’s company in selective doses because she does exhaust him. There is the reason why Alastor has maintained and kept his friendship with Mimzy for around 90 years now – and we can’t just boil it down to nostalgia (even if it does give Mimzy an edge).

Okay I’ve gotten side tracked but the point of this was to compare and contrast the relationship Alastor had with Vox and the relationships Alastor had with others at the time. Through this comparsion we can see that the only relationship which had room for Alastor’s internal state to have any relevance was his relationship with Vox. To clarify, I don’t Alastor vented Vox or expressed discomfort and emotional distress to Vox. No if there was any point in which Alastor did that it was by accident and something that both Vox and Alastor missed. A clear example of Alastor’s selective expression of an interior state is how Alastor at no point during the partnership offer pointed out to Vox that he didn’t like Vox holding Alastor by the shoulders nor does Alastor do anything to remove Vox’s hands even if the discomfort it causes him is severe enough for him to make that static noise and expression (which is very much Alastor’s version of a growl or hiss).

What I mean when I say that Vox’s and Alastor’s relationship in the past had room for Alastor’s interior state is that the relationship very much was built around catering to it in some way. Vox is very obviously hungry to please Alastor and gain his attention/approval even during that flash back. His jokes are aimed at making Alastor laugh, his flattery aimed to make Alastor feel nice and I can imagine Vox adjusting his behavior depending on what Alastor shows a positive reaction towards. It could of course be argued that Vox is trying to manipulate Alastor (it’s built in him by now, Vox can’t stop building and reinforcing his relationships with manipulation) however, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Vox is still the only relationship that Alastor has in which the other person is adjusting their behavior and language cater to his interior state.

This is largely why Alastor looks so fond in the flashback. He likely does see it as manipulation but Alastor still likes it and is largely the type of personality that brushes away the bad to appreciate the good (i.e. his continuing friendly relations with Rosie despite the fallout of their deal or Alastor hitting it off with the Vees despite being their prisoner)

And that’s what Alastor does. He systematically attacks every vulnerability and insecurity that Vox has. He laughs at him, goads at him and humiliates him – denying that he and Vox were ever close. If Vox thinks that he had his prize in his hands once – then why ever would he keep chasing after it in the future?

That ‘Oh Fuck’ Alastor gives while pulling at his own hair is the thing that really makes me buy into this lens (as delusional as it may be). Well maybe I’m reading into it. But Alastor doesn’t sound happy does he? He doesn’t sound amused, or pleased or satisfied. It sounds very much like he’s disbelief – that something he was quite sure he could depend on is crumbling in front of him and the only appropriate response left for him is to laugh about it. Mock Vox for the way he is. Mock his previous self for thinking this friendship was sustainable.

Turn it into something funny instead of something tragic and do with the scraps what he can. Alastor is after all an invulnerable monster who cannot be hurt. What need does he have for friendship and reciprocation except for as a passing fancy or joke?

Vox and Alastor humanized each other. That's the long and short of it. Before and after the Sparks Duo Era, Vox dehumanizes himself as something More than a person, while Alastor dehumanizes himself as something Less than a person. They found each other and were finally, finally able to just be People together. When they were together Alastor wasn't The Big Scary Radio Demon, Vox wasn't A Perfect Product or A God- they were just two flawed people who saw, understood, and LOVED each other. That's why they're both still Like That about each other 70 years later. They're chasing a feeling Nothing and No One Else was ever able to provide them.

Alastor and Vox who have spent their lives in the entertainment industry, an industry notorious for its dehumanization of its performers.

Alastor who spent his existence swathed in shadow. The charming radio host without a face, only accompanied by a voice of gold; a mysterious killer in New Orleans threatening to take in the dead of night; a myth in Pentagram City of a monster who consumes without hesitation or regret. Alastor is taken and perceived as one does the monster of a children’s cautionary tale. Maybe he’s a man, maybe a fraud. Maybe he isn’t even real, just a tale whispered on the streets and breathed into shadows.

Yet if there’s one thing that is to be sure about Alastor, it’s that he is a heartless creature. For those able to love would not kill and slaughter, those able to love would not participate in selfish machinations, and those able to love would definitely not run and hide and maim and writhe when met with a raw confession of adoration that confirms his one horror: that those around him—at least, those who matter—care deeply and lovingly about him, because he is not a monster found in the dead of night but because to them he is distinctly and horrifyingly human.

Alastor cannot love. It is simply not within his nature as the Radio Demon. He is not a person who is subjected under torturous and fallible human emotion. He is not a person. He is not a person.

Vox who spent his life placed under spotlights, the star of the show for all to see. Weatherman; news anchor; CEO; martyr; hell, cult leader. He takes every chance he can get to slip himself under those blinding lights and take the full attention of the crowd. He needs to be everything for the people, for what could is he worth if he isn’t? The thing about video is that it is the inherent illusion of proximity. Every television screen calls: trust me! I’m just like you! yet every second is designed, scrutinized, and carefully constructed. There is no way to tell if the person on the screen is being genuine or is a persona imitating authenticity. That is the epitome of Vox, because the truth of Vox as a character is that he is almost always performing a mask.

Vox can be anything for you! He’s your voice, your brave leader to take the march when no one will, the speaker for the masses—the voice of the people and therefore the voice of god. He can be everything you need him to be. He’s better than any what any other performer, no, person can provide. He’s there to guide you, comfort you. He’s your savior—reaching down with a hand outstretched and a silhouette bathed in light.

He’s not human, because to be human is to be fallible, and that simply isn’t within Vox’s nature. Because he is better than that, and no one else can compare.

And what is left under all else, under the egotism and schemes and arrogance and violent bravado are two men scared out of their minds from their first taste of real recognition for what they truly are: frauds dressed in silk.
