good philosophy for interacting with pets in general. I used to be cranky with the cats for chewing on my power cords until I realized how often that particular 'naughty' behavior was correlated with a comfort or anxiety issue, and when I stopped scolding them and said "show me?" they would stop chewing and lead me to the clogged fountain because they were trying to make catnip tea with their stuffed fishie, or the bug making Scary Buzzy Noises at the window, or the empty dish (sorry guys, that one's on the vet, she said you all needed portion control and it's an hour until dinner).

Point being, they have limited tools for communicating different kinds of needs; to those of us who are insufficiently literate in Ear, Tail and Whisker "I'm bored and want to play," "I'm feeling lonesome and want pets," "I want my brother to stop touching me," "there is a large spider I want to eat in the bathroom too high up for me," "it has been at least ten years since my last Churu stop watching Crunchyroll and get me one," and "the washer overflowed all over the basement floor" look similar. So it's not their fault they are expressing their frustration with their mouth when I'm not responding fast enough. That's what they have to do it with. That's on me for not being aware enough of what they're trying to communicate.
