The spiky, green grass beneath your palms tickled your skin as you attempted the stretch Ty Lee had demonstrated just moments before, the ever so smiley girl cheering you on from the sidelines along with Azula and Mai.
“Point your toes—you got it!” She squealed, applauding your simple handstand—a move she’d mastered long ago, but to hear her encouraging you for something she could do in the blink of an eye made you want to try even harder.
Silly activities like these were common whenever you went over to the fire-lord’s palace to see your friends, messing around with each other like the kids you were. It was innocent, playful antics…most of the time. Sometimes Azula would relax on her torturous methods of “fun”—at least that’s what she called it—and the four of you would just…hang out. Like normal pre-teen girls who painted each others nails, talked about school drama, and boys. Those were the moments you cherished the most with all of them. It was when you felt most human.
“With that form you’ll never get it right.” The unmistakable sound of Azula’s voice snapped you out of your focus, your fingers already itching, digging into the dirt to hold on just a bit longer, to strengthen your posture just a bit more—
“Don’t say that! She’s got it, Azula!” Ty Lee chimed in, looking at the older girl with a small pout on her lips. The brunette was always so optimistic, always happy. It inspired you, truly. She was a ray of sunshine, a shining star compared to the moon and the stars—Azula and Mai.
Azula’s voice—usually so sharp and commanding—went soft. Slick like honey. “Oh wait, you might actually be right. Maybe…she just needs a bit of help.”
Help? From Azula? You were her friend, but you weren’t exactly stupid either. You couldn’t see her, but her tone gave her away, dropping to a sinister octave that Ty Lee couldn’t seem to decipher, or Mai—who seemed to care less.
“I-I got it! It’s all good—“
“No no, Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Here—just keep that spine straight.” She smirked, pushing Ty Lee out of the way—who made a small squeak—before positioning herself right behind you, her hands slowly rising to your ankles.
You kept silent, biting your tongue as you fought to keep yourself up right—as well as blurting something out you shouldn’t…
Mai watched in dis-interest while Ty Lee beamed as Azula wrapped her hands around your ankles, raising your legs in a straight line. “It’s perfect!” Ty Lee giggled, bouncing near Mai like a jack-in-the-box. “You’re as good as me, hehe!”
Mai simply let out a small, dry huff, but the small curve of her lips betrayed the nonchalant facade she tried to put up. She really did care about you all, seeing you three together. Smiling. It was sweet.
“T-thank you.” You sighed in relief, your entire body warm from the sun—the heat slowly affecting your ability to sustain your position.
“Could you let go, Azula..?” Your voice was slightly shaky, the slight…fear, was it? In your voice only fueling Azula’s ego.
“Oh, of course.”
Just then, it felt as if time was going in slow motion. She took her time removing each one of her fingers from your skin, letting her pointer finger linger against your flesh, long enough to send a spark through the digit and directly onto your ankle, burning the body tissue.
You fell to the floor almost instantly, yelping in pain, immediately holding onto your ankle and applying pressure so you didn’t start crying right then and there. The pain surged through your entire body, an out of body noise leaving your lips when you bent it—attempting to assess the damage.
Ty Lee—and surprisingly—Mai rushed over to you instantly, crouching beside you as you sniffled the pain away. If you were anyone else they would’ve broke down right there, sobbing from the hot throbbing in their foot—but you weren’t. You endured it, and somehow that ticked Azula off.
“Oops.” She chuckled, “I told you, you didn’t have the right form. You should’ve just given up then. It’s karma after all.”
“So you burnt her?” Mai replied, her voice as monotone as ever. She was impassive, indifferent on the outside, but a small part of her wanted to roll her eyes.
Between their arguing you tried to stay quiet, but it was futile. Silent tears slowly rolled down your cheeks, dampening your top and leaving a stain.
Azula’s facial expression hardened, the blatant consequences of her actions catching her off guard. Accountability? She didn’t know the meaning of the word, so the fact she had to face it now made her choke.
“Fine, I’ll call Mother if it’ll ease your worries. Not like she’ll do anything of sustenance…”
Just as Azula stopped speaking, her Mother really did pass by, on her way to feed the little turtleducks as she usually would—except she was talking to someone beside her. Someone shorter.
Zuko was Azula’s older brother, someone you would always play with whenever you were younger—when it was just you and Azula. He was always kind to you, talking to you when Azula deemed you were too tiring to continue conversation with. Deep down…he was someone you admired. Zuko was sweet to you in a way that didn’t seem forced. Usually older brothers would dread talking to their little sister’s friends, labeling them as boring and prissy—but he was the opposite. At least when Azula wasn’t around.
“Oh great.” She groaned, looking down at you with a facial expression that displayed nothing but irritation. “Your boyfriend’s here to save you.”
You felt your entire face burn hotter than one thousand suns, embarrassment painting your features. So…maybe you did have a tiny crush on Zuko—you never thought of really making a move or even confessing—God no. It was just a small little…thing. It would go away with time. You hoped.
“Don’t be so—“ Ty Lee started, but when she saw the look on her face she held her tongue. She wasn’t one to challenge Azula. At least not like Mai would, but even she knew her place.
The closer Zuko and their Mother got the more you wanted to crawl into a hole and stay there until they went back inside. You didn’t want them—especially Zuko—to see you like this. Helpless and emotional like a little girl. You painted this picture of a strong, funny, independent girl to everyone else, and to have that all shatter now? To let someone you respect so much see you so vulnerable? It was humiliating.
“Y-you don’t have to call a-anyone.” You started, sniffling through your sentence, the mere sound of your voice like that heightening your shame. “I’m okay—I’ll get an ice pack at home—“
“Don’t be silly! It’ll get worse the longer it’s left untreated! Come on!” Ty Lee frowned, quickly standing up to grab your hands, attempting to steady you.
“I don’t think I can—“ You stop yourself before you can finish because you realize what you were saying. “Can’t do it.” Something Azula would say to mock you. Poke fun. And just like that you were immediately standing up, leaning onto your good foot as well as Ty Lee’s shoulder to coordinate yourself.
She watched you with scrutiny, eyes narrowed as she observed your limp. Pathetic—but it was over. It was no longer her problem.
“Let’s go, Mai.” She mumbled, looking over at the girl who was still sitting upon the grass, hands in her lap.
Mai got up without a word, flattening her skirt before following the older girl. It may have seemed just like another normal interaction with Azula, her as ruler and herself as the follower—but that wasn’t all she was thinking about. Her eyes had lingered earlier on the way you deflated when Zuko was brought up, how you physically shyed away when Azula called him “your little boyfriend.” Did you feel the same way? How she did to Zuko?
“Mai—I said let’s go.” Azula repeated, snapping her fingers in front of the poor girl’s face.
She said nothing as she snapped out of her daze, trailing behind Azula as they retreated back into the palace. “This whole thing was so idiotic. What a waste of time—I mean it’s not my fault she’s so weak. Her parents should be disappointed.” Azula smirked, flipping her bangs away from her eyes.
“Yeah.” Mai sighed, looking behind her just one last time to catch the sight of you—so far away now your body looked minuscule. “Right.”
Meanwhile, each step you took—even with Ty Lee’s assistance—felt like you were walking on hot coal. You tried your best to keep up the facade that it didn’t hurt, that the tiny amount of pressure you put on your weak foot didn’t want to make give up and start sobbing.
“Mrs. Ursa!!” Ty Lee shouted, catching both of their attention in a second. Zuko’s eyes met yours first—your watery, red eyes—and he immediately ran over. Not a single world was exchanged between you two, but it somehow felt as if he knew. He knew you were hurting, and not just physically.
“M-mom, help!” He looked back at Ursa—who was now running to all three of you. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you were burned, especially with a small, but prominent scar on your foot.
“My goodness.” Ursa’s hand went over her mouth, her eyebrows pinched together in worry.
“I-it was an accident—“ You hiccuped, unable to control the tears that began to flow as soon as Zuko made eye contact with you again, his sincere gaze tipping you over.
“Accident? Oh my..” She whispered—mostly to herself—as she quickly took your arm beneath her own, taking you away from Ty Lee. Zuko wordlessly grabbed your other side, looping his arm under yours. A small detail you’d beam over if you weren’t in hell.
Ty Lee backed away as soon as the mother-son duo took you into their arms, carrying your shaking figure. “I-is there anything else you need?” She mumbled, a deep frown curling her lips. She didn’t think Azula would do something like this—a harmless prank turned unfortunate…though was it ever really harmless or a prank to begin with?
“No.” Zuko huffed, earning a sharp look from Ursa in response. What could he say? He was protective of you, and knowing that you were just with Azula wasn’t helping his temper. It had to be her. There wasn’t any other explanation.
“No, Ty Lee. Thank you.” Ursa replied, “You were helpful enough, really.” She sent the girl a soft, understanding smile before focusing back onto you—now sobbing quietly.
Zuko’s grip only grew stronger around you the longer he heard your cries, the pain in your voice breaking his heart.
“It was Azula—I know it was!” Zuko suddenly blurted out, looking up at his mother. “Nobody else could have done that!”
“Zuko…we don’t know for sure. She said it was an accident and—“
“She’s—she just wants to protect Azula!”
Ursa pressed her lips into a thin line, her eyes darting between her sons, yours, and Ty Lee’s.
“How about you take her back inside to your room, Zuko? I’ll speak to Ty Lee about what happened.” She sent the brunette girl a warm look, signaling that she wasn’t in trouble—but Ty Lee knew she would eventually. Her fear of Azula outweighed her love for you.
“Fine.” Zuko huffed, immediately grabbing you so all your weight went to his side, forcing your arm over his shoulder so he could easily guide you with a hand against your waist.
“I-it wasn’t Azula…” you whispered, voice breaking ever so slightly as you defended the same person who’d hurt you so badly just mere minutes ago.
You heard him let out a heavy sigh, his annoyance slowly fading the farther he got from his mother. She’d always believed him, always called his younger sibling out, but it was hard to do anything when both you and Ty Lee chalked it up to an accident. An unexpected surprise. It didn’t fool him. Not one bit.
“Sure it wasn’t. I mean—why do you defend her so bad anyways? She’s horrible to you.”
“You don’t get it—“
His anger spiked at your words, his previously gentle hand against your side turning rough.
“Okay, fine. Maybe I don’t get it, it’s just—it’s just so stupid how you tolerate her! I would’ve left her as soon as I could’ve.”
You let out a small whimper in response, sniffling as you tried to speak, “She’s your own sister…”
“She hurt you. She’s…she’s…” Zuko cut him self off when he looked over at you, observing the sad, lost puppy dog look you had on your face. You truly did care for Azula, and nothing confused him more than that.
The rest of the walk was silent except for the occasional noises of pain that left your lips, the soft whimpers tugging at Zuko’s heartstrings. He didn’t understand you, not one bit. One thing he knew for certain however, was that it killed him seeing you like this, and that the second he walked into his quarters—he would do anything to cheer you up.
Thankfully the awkward tension had faded throughout the walk, and when you finally reached his room—he was happy to help you upon his bed, and patch you up as best as he could.
His room was clean, bed soft and comfy. It smelt of tea and jasmine, a scent you usually wouldn’t associate with Zuko, but who knew what he got up to in his spare time—what teas he drank or florals he brought. Maybe he was hiding other secrets about himself.
“Are you comfortable?” He spoke, watching you look around his room as if it was some foreign space.
“Yes..thank you.” You replied, your eyes following him as he opened a tiny drawer beside his bed. A few first aid things seemed to be scattered around, gauze and such.
“I thought cooling the wound first would be best..?” You mumbled, fidgeting around with the fabric of your clothes as he slowly pulled away from the drawer.
“Right..sorry. I’m not exactly a pro at this...” His lips curled upwards ever so slightly, an embarrassingly bright shade of pink dusting his cheeks.
You couldn’t help but smile in return, his saccharine expression infecting you like a disease. One you really wouldn’t mind having…
“I-i’ll go get some water.” He murmured, his eyes lingering on your own before leaving you alone.
It was so odd to be in his room all by yourself. You felt invasive in a way, taking mental notes of the way he kept his things, how meticulous he liked his belongings. It was intimate, to be honest. To look inside of someone’s life and peek into how they live.
When Zuko came back with small, metal basin filled with water, you immediately sat up—watching the liquid ripple through the tin as he walked towards you.
“Ten minutes in cold water and then…ointment. Then gauze.” He whispered to himself, placing down the basin beside the edge of the bed, close enough that you didn’t have to strain your muscles to reach it.
“Do you need help?”
“No, I’ve got it.” You smiled, carefully sliding your legs so you sat sideways on the bed before gently lowering your foot into the water. It wasn’t freezing, yet you still let out a whimper of discomfort—the sudden cool feeling against your skin numbing the pain slowly…
“Are you sure it’s alright?” He mumbled, his weight sending the bed creaking as he shifted to sit down next to you.
You nodded your head, looking over at him with a grateful expression. “It’a better than before…thank you.”
“Don’t thank me for something like this. I…wanted to.”
“Really?” You chuckled, swinging your other foot idly. “You looked so annoyed earlier when your mom asked you.”
Zuko mimicked you, a pretty little laugh escaping his lips. “That was just because of Azula.”
“Hm.” You replied, looking back down at your scarred ankle, how your toes wiggled in the water.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, nothing.” You responded, slowly tilting your head so your cheek pressed against his shoulder. It was something you’d wanted to do since the moment you two entered the room, but with him now finally next to you—servile; willing to do whatever you needed—you decided to test the waters and go ahead.
Thank God you couldn’t see him. His face was hotter than the sun, redder than the fullest of roses.
“You must be tired, h-huh?” He stammered, his attempt at nonchalance failing almost instantly. Even the smallest of things, the tiniest acts of affection—especially from you—had his brain malfunctioning.
“Yeah, I guess I am..”
“You could sleep in my room for a bit. If you want to, of course.”
You looked up at him, your chin on his shoulder, a smile on your lips. “I’d like that.”
“Yeah..?” He whispered, maintaining eye contact with you. His brown eyes practically disappeared as he looked down at you, pupils blown wide with love. Love love love.
“You’re eyes don’t seem tired.”
“They don’t?”
“They seem…awake, and very beautiful.”
You look away, your pulse quickening with each word that left his lips. Oh God, what was happening?
“You’re just saying that because I got hurt..”
He gently took two fingers, holding your chin before twisting your focus back onto him.
“I mean it.”
Your heart pounded against your ribcage, your breathing growing more and more erratic by the second. Was this really happening? Oh my gosh. Breathe…1..2..3..Breathe..
“I mean all the things I say to you. I mean it when I say I hope you’re okay. When I say I want to help you. When…when I say I really like you.”
Oh. Oh my God.
How many times have you said that in your head already?
“S-seriously?”
“Seriously.”
You let out a sigh of relief—that small exhale, the feeling of your breath against his lips…
“Can..Can I—“
“Yes.”
Zuko let out a small chuckle, his cheeks the same color as the scar on your ankle.
“Alright, but if you don’t like it..just remember you said yes before I even finished my sentence..”
He slid his fingers from your chin down to your nape, gently pulling you in until his lips pressed against yours. You immediately squealed into his mouth, the kiss lasting no longer than 5 seconds.
Zuko had immediately started laughing, your nervousness silently reassuring him he wasn’t the only one afraid to mess up.
“Don’t laugh! It..it was my first one!”
“Really? Well then I guess I’ll take that title with honor.” He smiled, spontaneously pecking your cheek. Like he couldn’t help himself—you were just too cute to not smooch!
“H-honor?” You stuttered, still dazed from the kiss—if you could really even call it that—just a few moments ago. The feeling of his lips against your own…
“Yeah, I’m glad I was first. Even if you…squeaked.”
“I-I did not!”
“Oh, you most definitely did—should I try again to double check..?”
