people must have been on some special kind of crack during hotd s1 because wdym we watched rhaenyra blame alicent for marrying viserys and instead of realizing how awful she was being, the fandom actually cheered and kept on cheering whenever she made alicent feel like shit for something she had no control over? people literally saw a teenage girl forcefully marry a man three times her age, get raped and impregnated multiple times while having to deal with his hypocritical ass neglecting the children HE wanted in favor of rhaenyra and they somehow made her the bad guy in all of this?? because rhaenyra's precious feelings got hurt??? are you fucking kidding me

cutting Nettles and merging her storyline with Rhaena's was purely motivated by a desire to protect Daemon and Rhaenyra ("Daemyra") from the audience's judgment.​Of course that’s what it was! The showrunner himself admits that the main focus was to avoid an "infidelity storyline" because he believes the audience "really wants to see this couple work out."​Claiming that it’s "interesting to pair a wild dragon with a noblewoman who becomes wild herself" sounds more like a script excuse to give Rhaena screen time than organic development. In the books, the dynamics between Nettles and Daemon added massive layers of ambiguity (was she a lover, a daughter, or a protégé?), something that is completely lost by putting his own daughter in that role.

sansa’s hairnet being used to poison joffrey without her knowledge is so horribly poetic because it perfectly embodies her role as a political pawn. by attaching the poison to her hairnet, sansa’s physical body is quite literally being used as a political tool by littlefinger and the tyrells without her consent, which they get away with by pretending to care about her in a very surface level way (olenna fussing with sansa’s hair like a mother would so that she can secretly take the amethyst from her hairnet). and if something goes wrong, the hairnet/poison is physically on sansa’s body, so the blame will be pinned on her.

basically it’s just literalizing the way that the bodies of highborn women and girls are regularly traded/sold for political gain through marriage pacts and alliances as an inherent part of how the ruling class functions (sansa and tyrion, dany and drogo, “arya”/jeyne and ramsay, lysa and jon arryn, cat and ned, alys and sigorn, edmure and roslin, arya and elmar, etc.). unless of course those women intentionally or unintentionally transgress those social boundaries in any way, in which case they’re quickly discarded and treated as objects of blame and disgust (losing their perceived honor/virtue/purity if they have sex or children outside of marriage) because women and girls are reduced to their physical bodies and the reproductive labor that is expected of them, so the blame for sex beyond the confines of marriage is placed entirely on them. and now sansa’s own body is being used as a weapon against her in the most literal way possible. lucky girl.

The homoerotic childhood BFFs turned enemies story seemed like a great idea in season 1 - and really was/would have been if they had actually remained enemies! Instead we got homoerotic childhood BFFs turned enemies turned... sorta allies, but in a really boring way? And both characters got lobotomized and defanged throughout season 2 (and what was planned to be season 2, i.e. 3x01 and 3x02).

What hurts is that I loved the show in season 1 - in spite of some issues I had even then - and had high hopes in it, after the disappointment of GoT.

The Rhaenyra and Alicent we see in the Driftmark scene in 1x07; and in all that led up to it, were great characters, before the writers decided to make them more... "likable"? (barf)

Such a pity. GRRM gave them a great blueprint, it's like he split Cersei into two far less evil, but still messy versions, and they started off well fleshing them out. We could have been watching StannisArianneCersei and MargaeryCatelynCersei beefing, with a ton of anger and resentment and repressed love and not-repressed hate, instead of... whatever this is.
