You know that when it rains for the first time since the race, Luca and Alberto dance.
Luca lets himself feel it all for the first time: every individual drop as it lands on his skin, one after another; watches colorful scales bloom under them, the glow of them spread like drops of paint. The rain gets heavier, turns into a shower, soaks him all the way through and embraces him, meeting him in every direction. Luca lifts his face to the sky and laughs when he discovers he has to close his eyes. He lets the raindrops trace his cheeks and focuses fully on the sensation.
It must be exhilarating, sensing water anew like that. This is what discovery is about. He is experiencing something he could never have had were he to stay in “his element”. And he is rediscovering something deeply familiar, in a way that makes him meet it all over again. Putting it in the context of the whole, and loving all of it: the land, the ocean, the sky, and this coming together of the three.
Alberto has felt it all before, and knows by now what it feels like, to be surrounded by water and air, to hear and sense it as it comes down and spreads itself over the world. He must love that so deeply about the surface. But he’s never had anyone to share it with, always alone, taking it all in at the top of his tower, and having no one there with him to meet his shining eyes.
Now, Luca is here, full of glee and delight, completely submerged into the moment. And as heavy vocal drops dance all over their shoulders, drumming out their own rhythm, they dance with each other, goofily, dorkily, happily, grabbing each other’s arms and and twirling in a circle, leaping in joy, kicking their legs up in the air; hollering and laughing their hearts out.
They are a part of the world. They get to experience it, fully and freely, with no fear or shame; and they get to do it together. They can dance in the rain and let their bare feet splash against puddles, they can make noise, draw attention, let everyone else witness their celebration. And they have each other to share it with.
