I'm losing it. I thought it was just me
- what is your secret ? - what do you mean ? - surely someone as old as you has some secret to divulge , with all that you have seen. golden eyes glisten. they are the only part of his features that hint at his true age , for youth clings to him as icarus once clung to sun. he shifts , as if reading my mind , and i know he is remembering something he would rather forget. - my secret is not a secret at all. inscribed in stone at my most sacred of temples , i have it left out for all to see. know thyself. - but what if i already do ? what if in my desperate efforts meticulously tear myself apart and in meticulous attempts to put myself back together , i have come to know even the darkest parts of myself in ways i never even wanted ? - then you are luckier than most. if you know yourself , then you may love yourself. - how do i do that? -i am not the god to ask that question , i do not have an answer and from somewhere off in the distance , we hear aphrodite laugh at the both of us.

Apollo, Greek god of healing, medicine, music and poetry
Apollo and Dionysus shake hands in their shared sanctuary of Delphi
*image from greek vase painting
The old Gods are not dead
They are not sleeping
They have always been here, watching
Letting humans practice their free will
Helping those that are wise enough to ask
And blessing those that remember Them
I think of all the Greek gods, Apollo is the peak of duality and contradcitions becos
god of disease & healing
the quintessential god of ancient greece, yet he is a foreign god
one meaning of his name is ‘to unite’ and another meaning is ‘to destroy’
his titles - he of the true word & he of the crooked words
he who shines like the sun & he who descends like the night
protector of young boys and slayer of young boys
he represents the cycle seasonal death and rebirth
even though he’s the life giving light of the sun, he has connections with death and graves
his music is unrestricted - he plays at sober, civilised events like weddings and wild, ecstatic events like bacchanals
he is called the farworker, yet he is the connection between the divine and the human
He is the god of civilization but his most importants oracles and temples weren’t at cities but at natural and isolated places.
He is the god of reason and knowledge but he’s the god of art and very emotional too.
He’s one of the gods responsible to protect the law but doesn’t mind of breaking/contest it if it’s necessary.
He’s one of the favorite sons of Zeus but he’s the most rebellious too.
He’s the god of the truth and always tells the truth, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be tricky too.

Hyacinth Changed Into A Flower (1769) - Nicolas Rene Jollain
The pillars of Hellenismos and how I fulfill them
I think that’s the only “official” framework I follow. 😂 Some of the Delphic maxims, the other Big Rule Text, are really outdated and the good ones - pretty obvious, so I prefer not to consider them since I fulfill the good part anyway, but the pillars (though they have been, from what I’ve learned, a thing people just did, embedded in culture and philosophy, not something official they had to follow) are simple and pretty much timeless. A nice thing to point to when people are like “but are there rules???”
