“Reg, d’you think one day we’ll have a big backyard like this?” James asked softly.
Regulus, who had admittedly been zoning out a bit as he and James lay together on a blanket in the Potters’ yard enjoying the summer sun, rolled a bit to look at his boyfriend and gave him a confused look. “Hm?”
James propped himself up on an elbow and gave him a sincere look. “Y’know. When we have our own house. Get married. All that. D’you want a big backyard?”
The question nearly knocked Regulus sideways. For his entire sixteen years, he had never thought once about having a future with someone. Not like that. Not full of happiness and unadulterated joy.
Actually, whenever he’d allowed himself to think about it, he’d lamented about forced marriage and stifling tradition and a life full of lies. But truthfully, he hadn’t thought about it much, because the future had been even more terrifying than the present. Full of looming claustrophobia.
But now….? Suddenly, he was free.
James was a dreamer. And here he was, dreaming for both of them while Regulus was still learning how.
Regulus could hardly breathe with the elation that filled his whole body, inflating his chest and bringing tears to his eyes.
“Yes. We need one,” he said quietly but decisively. “For our kids.”
James’s look of utter, shocked joy could have lit up the entire country.
