“What?”

With his brow furrowed and head tilted just slightly, Nikola was the picture of confusion. But the anxious little frown easily shifted into a sympathetic smile, and he slid his arms around Mike’s waist, looking up at him, his manner gentle. “You’re never trouble for me, Mike…” Stopping himself short of adding a self-deprecating quip, he sighed and closed the short distance between them, pressing close in an adoring embrace.

Mike smiled weakly. Still pale, lost a bit of weight, but it seemed the worst was already over. He wrapped arms around his boyfriend’s waist and sighed softly.

“I love you…”

It had been a difficult time of late with more than a few downs, but Mike proved time and again to have incredible strength and willpower, and Nikola couldn’t have been more proud. Swaying him gently, he kissed his boyfriend’s cheek. “I love you, too. Want to try to eat a little soup or toast or something?”

It was really the last thing Nikola expected in April, even if it had been chilly lately. After all, the leaves were back on the tree, daisies and dandelions were growing, bees were buzzing around quite happily. Spring was in bloom. Yet after a long and arduous day of dealing with crash after belligerent patient after bleed, waiting for him as he flopped onto the couch with a little groan, was a big mug of hot chocolate, with whipped cream on top and the last of the leftover candy canes sitting at the edge, flavouring it mildly with peppermint.

Surely he was dreaming,

Looking from the mug to his boyfriend’s smiling face, he grinned, and he pulled the other down onto the couch with him, nuzzling warmly. “I must have done something really, really good,” he purred.

As they helped Mike inside and to the right ward, Niki kissed his boyfriend’s temple. “I’d proud of you,” he whispered, holding his hand and giving it an encouraging squeeze. “I know it hurts, believe me. But you’ve already taken the first few steps to getting better and I am so proud of you…”

Mike suddenly felt a bit worse and almost collapsed. Samiel held him firmly and then called the doctors over.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured, holding him up firmly, trying to be cool and logical about this. Mike was a patient now, maybe not at his hospital, but he could still deal with this. Looking around for a trolley, hoping one was on the way, he kept his grip.

Niki wrapped an arm around his boyfriend, stroking him and trying his best to provide comfort. He hated this, hated that Mike felt so guilty, hated that he’d let something like this happen. When they got out of the vehicle, he couldn’t even look Samiel in the eye, still holding Mike close.

But the elder wasn’t angry. He was worried sick and hurt to see them like this. Contrary to popular belief, Samiel Blackfeather indeed had a heart.

Giving a soft goodbye over the phone, he hung up and returned to Mike, gently pulling the blanket away from him. “No, sweetie; you’re feverish,” he murmured, holding him tight and rubbing his arm soothingly. “I know you feel cold but your body is too warm…” Sighing, he called in a favour from the hospital he worked at, getting a patient transport vehicle to take them from the apartment to the hospital Samiel wanted Mike to go to. Bundling his lover into the vehicle and holding his hand the whole way, anxiety seemed to chew at his heart more fiercely than he chewed at his lip.

Mike just felt horribly guilty. He kept apologising all the way to the hospital, at the end of the road, he started crying. 

The hospital unofficially belonged to Feathercorp, so they were indeed quite discreet. Samiel was waiting for them, his expression softened as looked at his soon.

I love you so much.” To make it easier for him to speak with his father, Niki reckoned he needed privacy, and set off for the kitchen, but if Mike needed him, he wouldn’t be far away.

Mike talked to his father for a bit. Then gave phone to Niki as Samiel asked for that.

“Please take Michael to the hospital, okay? I’ll give you the adress.” Samiel sounded very tired.

Mike sniffled, his nose got runny. Another symptome of withdrawal.

Pushing Mike’s hair back from his face, Niki sighed, teeth still worrying his lip. He could try to control his temperature at home, but serious damage could be done if it couldn’t be controlled. And if that was permanent…? Even if it didn’t kill his lover, it would disable him even more than he already was.

“We need to tell someone, Mike,” he said softly, trying not to aggravate him. “I can try to keep your temperature stable with anti-inflammatory drugs and ice, but you might still need a doctor. I could call your dad, maybe…”
