Can we just talk about this mirror effect for a second.
I love this mirror effect in the opening that shows Ren and Akechi both merging out of the other, it’s symbolic in many ways
Ren is walking in the light and Akechi is walking in the dark. This could be showing Ren being whole, as so far in life right up until the Shido incident he had a good life, a family who loved him. He belonged however now Ren is talking towards the darkness, showing how his life is falling apart, he’s been labelled as a criminal, cast out from his family. He’s in a dark place and so he no longer walks in the light. As he walks into the darkness he forms into Akechi who has lived all his life unloved, thrown around by people who never seen how much he suffered, nobody has ever wanted him, his own mother killed herself over him, his father we all know is the worst jerk walking, but Akechi once the Phantom Thieves come along finds himself wanted and loved, he comes out of his dark place and walks into the light, but as he does he forms into Ren just as Ren formed into Akechi.
It’s showing they are the same person. Ren and Akechi are both the Wild Card Persona users, both have the same power which is unusual among persona users, it makes them different from the others who don’t have the gift. In this Ren and Akechi are linked by fate to always be together. For the good and bad. They are joined to each other just as they are joined by fate, always bond to either rise or fall by each other’s hands.
It’s showing the ‘Phantom Vs Detective’ story line. Where Ren walks, Akechi follows. Maybe not at the same time, but Akechi is always right behind Ren, trying to find him and his friends, it also shows Ren is always ahead of Akechi, until they come together.
They both look as depressed as the other. When Ren turns into Akechi, Akechi looks like he is going to cry. When Akechi turns into Ren, his eyes are down. Both boys look upset, this is the weight Ren understands later, about how both he and Akechi are prisoners of fate and no matter how hard they try they wont be able to stop what is to come.
It’s also hinting at the promise Ren makes to Akechi later in the game. Both boys being close together, they can hear the other but can’t see each other because they have been separated and cant reach the other. In this scene no matter how close Akechi and Ren try to get to each other they can never be together, never can see the other, but always reminded of the promise - to stop the evil of that world.
