Uncertain feelings in uncertain times after 5 months of being unemployed with no end in sight
This post is almost a year old, and I'm still unemployed with no end in sight. I just got notice yesterday that I don't qualify for my health insurance anymore. Things feel incredibly dire these days 😞
unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. “oh I didn’t go in looking for this but hmm, I’m tempted… I can’t resist… oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]” and then it doesn’t even matter if you don’t like them because a) free b) you’re gonna give them back anyway
Librarian here! Please please please please PLEASE do this! We don’t have any way to know if you read them, and we don’t care! We’re happy to see those books go out because that helps our stats. And that affects how much money we can get.
So grab that silly paperback romance, and maybe this new YA fantasy, oh and check for the new movies too! And don’t forget to check Libby and hoopla for music and ebooks and e-audio.
This is such an important and genuinely terrifying post. I could completely go off on the rise of anti-science, but for now I’ll just add: it isn’t just boomers that get deceived. This is a warning to all of us.
Pay ATTENTION to what you are being told. If you think you cannot be deceived, you leave yourself open to deception. Question, doubt, research research research. Learn about your personal biases, dig up any subconscious cognitive dissonance. Keep an eye on your mind.
It needs to be stressed that biases, not a lack of intelligence, is very much the issue here. Being aware of the need to fact check yourself is key: Intelligence won’t protect you from bad or unhealthy mental states, or keep you safe from cults of any sort. Intelligence will just make it easier for you to rationalize and attempt to justify the malformed tools you’ve taken/been given to yourself and others. You need to be wise enough to challenge yourself.
As a cult survivor, this is lethally accurate.
As a librarian, I would also add that even more important than doing your research is understanding how to evaluate and check SOURCES. What terrifies me about the modern age is that many people consider watching YouTube or reading social media posts to be “research.” To them it is as good as reading peer-reviewed articles from trusted journals and publications. In reality, never trust someone who says they have done the research for you, especially if they are dodgy about listing sources by name. Fact-check everything, including the source of a fact. Never believe anything you hear on the internet unless it can be independently verified. Resources like Snopes and NewsGuard can help you check the veracity of reports and media sources. Other free options, like a library card, can give you access to hundreds of databases and trusted peer-reviewed journals if you ever want to fact-check something manually. Either way: there is no shortage of options out there for how to do your own homework. Laziness is no excuse for ignorance.
Kim Keever
“Miniature topographies inside 200-gallon fish tanks, based on traditional landscape paintings. Keever fills the tanks with water once he’s sculpted and placed the miniatures, and colored lights and pigments create dense, atmospheric environments. He views his works as an evolution of the landscape tradition and deliberately acknowledges the conceptual artifice.”

Ok, yeah, this is the version I’m gonna reblog from now on..
for once i don't actually know this tumblr tradition, can someone explain pls 🥺
Long ago, at the very dawn of the new millennium, there was a popular, albeit mediocre, boy band. And they released a popular, albeit mediocre, song titled:
It's Gonna Be Me
But the era of boy bands was lawless and not in the sexy way. There was no real requirement for personal talent. And in lieu of that, many performers leaned heavily into weird gimmicks.
Like exaggerated pronunciations.
And though they surely did not know it, whoever decided to leave a note for the lead singer (perhaps he decided it himself) along the lines of "Emphasize the 'Me'" had set history in motion.
The titular line was sung like "It's gonna be May"
Which absolutely nobody liked, and was a choice questioned by even diehard fans.
Other things that were perplexingly popular in this ancient age of musical fuckboys included: bad dye jobs and perms on people whom nature had never intended to wear curls.
And thus, as he sang "It's gonna be May" with the dedicated inflection of a drunken bar creep, he did so with a hairdo that looked like an uncooked ramen cake.
And so, every year we commemorate this confluence of questionable aesthetic choices by ushering in the Month of May with nothing but a picture of dried ramen noodles <3

I just want you. Your messy morning hair. Your humming when you’re making breakfast. Your cuddling during thunderstorms. Your hand holding mine as we gaze at the stars. Your good days. Your bad. Your everything. I want you.
