now since tumblr apparently loves to support non-american authors, but is surprisingly mum about this, imma tell you.

you see, everybody's favorite evil corp, Amazon, bought Indian publishing house Westland some six years ago. Now Westland is a very famous and reputed publishing house in India, and has put forth some of the best titles the country has seen. It didn't shy away from controversial and uncomfortable topics, and some of its books quite vocally criticise the current government, which has been responsible for the current state of india as a pseudo-democratic, pseudo-secular, economically ruined country, the most notable one being The Price of the Modi years by Aakar Patel. It also produced Amish Tripathi's pathbreaking Shiva Trilogy.

Now here's the thing that got me nuts.

JUST OUT OF THE BLUE, IT IS CLOSING DOWN WESTLAND FOREVER. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT IS TO COME OF THE HUNDREDS OF TITLES PUBLISHED BY IT, OR OF THE AUTHORS ITS CONTRACTED, OR THE PEOPLE EMPLOYED BY IT.

It has triggered a buying surge in India, as people go on shopping spress to get their hands on the titles they want from this house. Short on supply and high on demand, bookstores across India are showing solidarity and moving surplus books around.

it's obvious that the death penalty allows for police and politicians to not just disproportionately lock up but literally murder people of color, especially black men. and it's obvious that there are tons of flaws in our judicial system and how cases are handled by the police and in courts, and that again people of color experience those flaws much more frequently and at worse degrees. and even from an economic perspective choosing to executing 1 person costs more than sentencing them to life in prison (which i don't support either btw).

but even without all this, the government should not have the right to fucking kill people, whether or not they committed a crime. even if that crime was murder. the united states is one of 53 countries that still practice the death penalty.

like i just don't understand how this is a debate. it's an archaic and barbaric practice that shouldn't fucking exist

and also pray tell....in america, who do u think gets the worst sentences for murder and rape? who do u think gets repeatedly accused of such crimes with little to no evidence? who do u think is automatically seen as a lesser human, so once there is even the littlest suspicion to believe he committed some crime, he's guilty? and thus deserves to be executed? and the state has the right to do so? when u say "but murderers and rapists deserve to die!" look at how much more likely black men are to be found guilty and sentenced to death vs. how many white men get off the hook with that shit.

i know my platform is pretty weak and i usually don’t post shit like this but please sign and promote this. first of all, this man is likely innocent, regardless of what you think of the death penalty. second of all, his preventable state sponsored death is imminent and we have a chance to delay it. this man deserves the best possible legal representation and a right to fight for his life.

rocky is an intellectually disabled 53 year old man. the key witness who helped convict him recanted their testimony. the jury who ended up convicting him did not even want a death penalty. there is a likely racial component as well, 11 of the jurors were white—one of them even referred to mr. myers with a horrible racial slur after the conviction.

please give this article a look as well. you don’t have to be a forensic scientist to realize there is something incredibly fishy about this investigation, the multiple other suspects, the political pressure to convict, the biases. this court case is VERY, VERY SUSPECT and he is likely INNOCENT.

Whittier, Alaska, is a town of about 200 people, almost all of whom live in a 14-story former Army barracks built in 1956. I have only been to the outside of Whittier, that one time I took the ferry from Valdez, and it’s grim-looking as hell.

This also neglects to mention that the only ways to reach Whittier are either the aforementioned ferry, bush plane, or a 2.5 mile-long, approximately 15′x15′ tunnel through a mountain that looks like this inside:

The AKDOT website reassures us that “During the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake (the greatest magnitude earthquake ever recorded in North America) the tunnel suffered no significant structural damage and no cave-ins.”

Also please note that though most of the population now lives in the Begich Towers, the townspeople used to reside in the Buckner Building, which is now abandoned and just. Sitting there. Empty. The building that used to be a whole town. Looking super fucking haunted:

I can back this up. It isn’t only their shelters.

I have a family friend who worked at our local Salvation Army headquarters as a a secretary. This particular office took all the Christmas donations for children in need, put them in a warehouse, and on a designated day the staff and their friends picked through them all, taking whatever they wanted. She saw people hauling away bikes donated for specific families. Some local children had hundreds of dollars of gifts donated in their name, and on Christmas they received three cheap things, items likely not even from the person who sponsored them.

My friend quit, and I’ve not given them a dime of my money since then.

Do not give to the Salvation Army.

I’m a wildfire and disaster logistics specialist.

I deal with a lot of agencies who provide disaster relief.

I used to say the Salvation Army’s disaster services were the one (literally the ONE) good thing they did.

They would come in, set up a canteen trailer, make and pass out hot coffee and donated food in a disaster, usually being one of the first agencies to get there and the last to leave.

Then I found out.

Every time they did this, regardless of if they were actually invited or deployed by the agency in charge (usually FEMA, sometimes others) they would SELF-DEPLOY. Meanjng they would just show up. Ok. That’s not TOO bad, sometimes agencies have to take initiative and get there before the red tape is sorted out. BUT. They, after they left at the end of the incident, they would send FEMA or the host agency a BILL. They used one or two paid employees (usually the driver of the truck and a supervisor); and many VOLUNTEERS, but they would bill for EVERYONE’s Labor at standard federal rates. They would bill for the food they distributed even though it was all donated by another agency or private parties. They would bill for the coffee they made and the supplies. Except they would use electricity from the shelter location, water from donations or from the shelter, and in many cases, they would get the coffee and industrial filters DONATED, but bill for them at retail prices.

Don’t FUCKING give to the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is also ass to the workers. A good number of people join it, naively thinking that it’s doing good, and end up leaving cynical and beaten down. The management is hostile, if not outright abusive, and demand some ridiculous hours of it lower to mid-level staff. Don’t support these people.
