Characters feel very shallow and with no defined personality.They spend the whole book casually cracking jokes and smiling at each other, getting pizza, flirting; it all feels like an afternoon hanging out with friends, which is part of the Titans, but shouldn’t set the mood for the entire story. Wally is back from the dead, they are facing a super powerful enemy who seems to have erased everyone’s memories, there should be some sort of tension in the air, right? It’s a big mystery and a threat that can attack them at any minute.
As far as personalities go, characters just don’t act like the characters we saw on Titans Hunt. Garth has no longer an attitude, Donna doesn’t act like an Amazon warrior, they are just there, smiling.
The art isn’t necessarily bad, but --like the writing-- it lacks personality and depth, and resembles a lot the generic comic book art of the 90s (there’s this panel on page 13 showing Donna sitting on a couch with her feet weirdly bent down and Garth standing in a hallway posing heroically while staring at a wall (?) that I can’t stop thinking about.) All women look the same, everyone has the same hair, and the coloring really doesn’t help. We are seeing a team with three redheads and three black haired persons, all hair and skin have exactly the same shade. #TitansSoWhite The best thing art-wise is the variant cover by Mike Choi, beautiful work (see below.)
So far, my biggest disappointment on #DCRebirth. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very hopeful, but a lot of my excitement from Titans Hunt and Titans Rebirth wore off after this.
Highlight: we saw the blue hand of the enemy who rewrote history, which reinforces the Dr. Manhattan theory.
Lowlight: an uninspired issue both in art and writing that raises concerns about the future of this book. Also, I still can’t deal with Omen’s costume. With so many great redesigns on Rebirth, what exactly were they going for with that?
