Racial bias in America: from higher suspension rates in preschool, to disproportionate rates of capital punishment, to everything in between, structures of authority routinely allow anti-Black racial bias to color the “facts”, and warp the narrative. And frequently (whether unintentional or otherwise) the police and the media often work together to further criminalize innocent Black victims

Should everyone check in with you first before posting anything about racism or anti-racism? —we’ve got Black celebs out here talking about #newBlackMentality and trying to beat other Black people over the head with BS respectability politics and misplaced MLKjr quotes, we’ve got cops and the media targeting innocent Black people, and YOUR issue—your big contribution—is that YOU don’t need a study to tell YOU something?😒 

Look, racism is centuries old. C e n t u r i e s. Trayvon and Renisha and Mike Brown are the latest murders in a long, looong line of racially motivated murders since before Emmett Till, but should no one EVER post about the endemic racism behind their murders either —because it “ain’t new”? 

Know what? For you and the whole “and fire is hot” crowd with nothing useful to add —so long as it’s not exploitive & Macklemorian™ in nature, I’ll take any contemporary “new” studies on old subjects, or meaningful insights or help I can get if it shakes even a few people woke & helps get them to connect the dots and see how police routinely criminalize Blackness and the role corporate media frequently plays in criminalizing Blackness

Sadly (and frustratingly), for a lot of people, just hearing me (or tbh any other Black person) relate repeated life experiences won’t always do the trick. ”They needed a study to tell them this?” Yes, yes apparently some people still do. Both #newBlacks and Whites
