Sheffield’s leading lighting supplier, Olmec/Surelight, is privileged to have supplied specialist lighting that has been used on a hugely impressive green energy project at the prestigious Brunel University in London.
In one of the first green energy projects on such a scale in the UK, Olmec/Surelight worked closely with Moixa Technology, the firm that has developed Maslow, the solar powered system used in the project. Maslow is a distributed battery storage system using technology which, avoiding the AC-DC conversion, increases the efficiency of LED lighting and can store energy at night or when solar power is in surplus. It can then export energy to reduce peak grid demand and avoid peak pricing. A cluster of Maslow units can be used as one larger storage resource, like a virtual power plant.
Moixa worked in conjunction with the UK Government Department of Energy and Climate Change on the Brunel project, in which 16 flats at Fleming Hall were fitted with Maslow energy storage units. To provide the lighting, Moixa brought in Olmec/Surelight because of its reputation for providing cutting edge lighting and affordable systems. Olmec/Surelight re-developed its Apollo, Selene and Cubus LED down lights and wall lights into low voltage DC versions so they would work with the solar power generated and stored by the Maslow system.
The results speak for themselves, with the system generating an estimated saving of 85% on energy consumption, 42.2 MWh per year. That translates to around £5,600 per year on the 16 flats in which the system has been installed. In terms of carbon reduction, the new installation will save around 21.6t CO2 per year.
Energy sustainability manager at BrunelUniversity, Bob Stiff, is delighted saying,
“We are delighted to take part in trials like this” and “there’s no substitute for practical experience in trialling new low energy technologies ahead of making decisions about embedding them in refurbishment programmes.”
