An Interview with Richard Siken
Support Indigenous Drag!
Drag has got to be one of the most influential forms of queer art in the world. Shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race have exploded into the mainstream, opening audiences' minds to the queer art world.
In this post, I want to bring attention to 3 Indigenous Drag Queens and their impact on both the Drag world and the Indigenous world.
Lady Shug
Lady Shug is a Diné (Navajo), Nonbinary (She/Her, They/Them), Drag Queen from the Navajo Nation. She works as both a drag queen and activist, and has even been featured on an episode of the HBO show We’re Here. Lady Shug has always centered her Native ancestry in her art and works to support a multitude of Native communities.
Her #ShugChallenge for Mutual Aid aims to support small Native communities and border towns around the Arizona and New Mexico area.
You can support Lady Shug and her Drag here

Landa Lakes
Landa Lakes ( Miko Thomas out of Drag) is a Chickasaw Drag Queen based in San Francisco. She is an activist for Indigenous and Two Spirit communities. She is a board member of the Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS), a volunteer-based organization that aims to support and provide activities culturally relevant to LGBTQIA+ Native Americans. Please donate to the BAAITS here.
Lakes is also a part of an Indigenous Drag Troupe called the Brush Arbor Gurlz. The Gurlz raise awareness and money for Native and 2SLGBT+ communities.

Lady Shug and Landa Lakes also collaborated to create Indigenous Drag Story Hour, which explores Native culture, language, and, of course, stories, with children. Donate here!
Hailey Tayathy
Hailey Tayathy is a member of the Quileute Nation and serves as Seattle's premier Native Drag Queen. Tayathy uses their drag to spread awareness about, and bring healing to, Indigenous communities and Indigiqueers alike.
Tayathy’s art takes many forms, and you can see her digital prints, fiber and fashion art, and public art here! Tayathy’s art involves a mixture of traditional Quileute-style artwork with 2SLGBTQIA+ themes, bridging the two communities together in a positive, loving, beautiful way.
Here is an example of her public art, specifically a NW Film Forum Window Mural. The mural is bordered by two eagles that she states represent the strength of the LGBTQ+ community and Indigenous communities alike. The couple in the middle is not given any gender marker, so viewers can define the couple in a way that represents them.
She was also involved in designing a cover for the “Celebrating Our Magic Toolkit” in 2024, which serves as a resource for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and their support systems.

Rip Anthony Stewart Head.
Here's an amazing story about him that I read years ago and never forgot.
I'd hoped to meet him at a convention, myself, one day.

Your affection for your charge has rendered you incapable of clear and impartial judgement. You have a father’s love for the child, and that is useless to the cause.
Rest easy, Giles. Your watch is over. We’ll take it from here.
RIP Anthony Stewart Head, an incredible actor, musician, singer, LGBTQ+ ally and activist, devoted girl dad, and father figure to many of us as we grew up.
You will be dearly missed. 🩷

what a fella!!
being a kid and hearing adults say stuff like "woah 2011 was 4 years ago haha" didn't really convey the fucking horror of a youtube video crossing my recommended labelled "9 years ago" and it's from 2017. that's not true. 9 years ago is 2010 or something. don't lie.
I hate how 3 pm is so close to 2 pm so there's an illusion that there's still time left in the day to do things but in reality 3 pm is also close to 4 pm and if it's close to 4 pm you might as well just wait till tomorrow. <- can't argue against this by the way.

I think it sucks that you have to go to so many different kinds of doctor to take care of yourself. It's the 21st century. I should be able to go to a single office where they scan me with a big xerox machine and tell me what I'm allergic to and why my tummy hurts and if I have any cancer or cavities or if my glasses prescription has changed. And then I should get a sticker.
im just not convinced humans were ever meant to be this busy
every day i am surrounded by people who need more naptime, and more playtime, and more storytime, and more playdates and parties and sleepovers. when it comes to worktime, however

Slower machines/processes mean in a given amount of time you can only set to accomplish 3 things, as opposed to 12. It means you probably either have to — or rather are able to — focus all your attention on the one thing, or you have time to kill while the thing is accomplished. When leisure activities are slow as well, killing time is relaxing. And that amounts to less chores to do in general, less worries, because it’s physically impossible on top of humanly unhealthy to have more.
Fast machines/processes mean multitasking is not only possible, but the norm. You HAVE to accomplish 12, 20 things in that same amount of tine now. It doesn’t matter that it isn’t humanly healthy, since it’s physically possible and financially cost-effective. We started multitasking about 15 years ago and we didn’t stop — whether it’s work or chores or leisure. We started optimising our leisure so it can be layered onto our chores, which kinda means we actually don’t have it by the way, and the activities themselves are fast now too, so the relaxing has no chance of happening, and now movies are written specifically so that people who are scrolling on their phone while they watch can still understand the plot.
✨It sucks✨
