Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - )
“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” - which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand — not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.” — NICHELLE NICHOLS
Thinking about how much I love no man's land as a batman story again not only is the premise really funny considering the US government saw that Gotham was going through their bi annual catastrophe and said to themselves "We could waste more money trying to fix Gotham ... again orrrrr we can blow up their remaining bridges so we don't have to give a shit about that hell hole anymore" basically turning Gotham into villain island from the descendents movies but also the story introduced Cassandra Cain like what more could you want
Robin shut up you're scaring the hoes
KICK THE CAN!
Let’s play the biggest game of kick the can on the internet.
To kick the can, reblog it. I wanna see how long this can go on for.
the oldest reblogs for this post that i can find are from january 2nd of 2013. this can has been getting kicked around tumblr for almost 13½ years now
And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
I'm not sure what mood this is but it sure is one
it’s a spoiler alert
She’s definitely spoiling her dinner.
[ID: An image of a white sporty-looking car with a high spoiler on the back; a woman is sitting on the trunk of the car, legs through the spoiler, using it like a narrow table to eat soup off of. She also has what looks like a coffee drink and possibly some french fries nearby.]
This post has been sitting in my drafts for 4 years. Thank you @ihatebrainstorm for making this joke possible.
day 4: reunion
i love creating oc x canon ships i think more people should do them and i think more people should be really, really, really weird about them
reblog if you too are bi and confused or support others’ right to be bi and confused
When my mother forgets a word, she is the queen of coming up with new words. Words that would take a third National Treasure movie to fully decipher. I was talking to her yesterday, and she said this: “You know the time for los jibbities is coming up. You must be so excited!” Oh, is it time for los jibbities already? I must have missed it on my calendar. Are we celebrating something? “Of course! We should all be celebrating, shouldn’t we?” OK, so los jibbities is a happy thing. It’s not like something is giving you the heebie-jeebies, which would have been my one and only guess. “Los heebie-jeebies? Now you’re making things up...and this is my show.” You’re right. The time for los jibbities is coming up. Is this a season? “Yes, the season for love. The season for pride.” OK, los jibbities. “Yeah, sound it out.” Los…jibbities. LGBTs! “Sí, mira cuz you’re gay!” “You couldn’t just say pride season? You couldn’t just… *laughs*
HAPPY LOS JIBBITIES EVERYBODY!!!
The time for Los Jibbities has arrived!

This is mesmerizing to watch.
actually physically painful to watch because you know months were spent masking all those frames for each of the kajillions of transitions in this
Holy………..shmokes…….
Oh?? My god??
I’ll try my best to describe this. It’s a video with a mash-up of a bunch of different Disney movies, set to a song that’s a mash-up of a bunch of other songs. That in and of itself wouldn’t make it praiseworthy, but this is DONE SO WELL that just, holy cow.
HOLY SHIT
Every time I see this, I HAVE to watch.
It is Law.
The thumbnail doesn’t do it justice, but I don’t think one single image really could.
official linguistics post
if I were Damian I would've crashed out ten times more than canon because sure, yeah, you're not Father's first Robin, you can live with that, but then you train under Dick and you're not even technically his first Robin either? somehow Todd is Dick's first Robin even though neither of them ever bring it up. and if he's not Father's and not Dick's first, who is he? coming second, third, fourth, every time. that wears on anyone long term, much less a child.
i was finally able to recreate my favorite scone recipe of all time, a thing i have been chasing for 20 years. unfortunately the secret was 3/4 cup butter and 3/4 cup cream for every 2 cups of flour
okay recipe for those who are asking keeping in mind i just did a bunch of random bullshit as usual
2.5 cups flour
1.5 tsp baking powder
.33 cup sugar
.5 tsp salt
OPTIONAL: random spices (i used ground grains of paradise because i wanted to)
MIX: all that together and then
cut in .75 cup cold cold butter until pea sized
OPTIONAL: add about .5 cup frozen blueberries and mix in
add .5 cup cream and mix, adding more if needed until the dough is cohesive. you can mix with your hands but that'll warm up the butter which you don't want to do.
(people will warn you not to overmix but that's only an issue if you're way too into it) (but don't overmix)
MAKE: scone shapes of your choosing and put on greased baking sheet
cook at 425 for 20-25 mins
OPTIONAL: paint with cream and sprinkle with sugar before baking
do i have to add berries?
no. if you want to add any fruit it's better if you freeze first because they won't pop while mixing and they help keep the butter cold. you can add anything you want. what i really wanted to add was white chocolate and coconut which i will do one day when im feeling dangerous. it's just imperative you add this prior to adding the cream.
